Editorial: Efficacy and mechanism of herbal medicines and their functional compounds in preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular disease risk factors

Nano-phytosome loaded Retama raetam extract/colistin: antibacterial, antioxidant activities and in vivo lipopolysaccharide-induced-neurotoxicity inhibition

Antibiotics are misused nowadays, leading to the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains; causing the world to move towards natural medicine. Retama raetam had wide medicinal use. In the present study, R. raetam ethanolic extract proved to be active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MIC values ranged from 15.62 to 250 µg/ml. Antioxidant analysis showed that the extract had high scavenging activity reached 92.40%. GC/MS analysis revealed that Sparteine and Tributyl acetylcitrate represent the extract major components. Furthermore, the combination between Retama raetam extract and colistin showed a synergistic effect. Moreover, nano-phytosome was designated and optimized to encapsulate Retama raetam extract/Colistin. Nano-phytosome characterized by particle size, Zeta potential, polydispersity index and Entrapment efficiency percentage of 16.92-32.85 nm, -30.40 mV, 0.26 and 89% respectively. The antibacterial activity of the prepared nano-phytosome formula against P. aeruginosa showed promising MIC, MBC, MIC index, and IZ diameter reaching 7.81, 15.62 µg/ml, 2, and 39 mm, respectively. While TEM examination of P. aeruginosa cells treated with nano-phytosome formula revealed cell wall breakage which led to cell death. Finally, P. aeruginosa LPS was used to induce neurodegenerative disease in rat model. Rats treated with nano-phytosome formula showed normal histoarchitecture organization and the cerebral cortex was partially restored compared to control groups.

DHCR24 in Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment: A Comprehensive Review

As an important nutrient in the human body, cholesterol can not only provide structural components for the body's cells, but also can be transformed into a variety of active substances to regulate cell signaling pathways. As an important cholesterol synthase, DHCR24 participates in important regulatory processes in the body. The application of DHCR24 in tumor clinical diagnosis and treatment also attracts much attention. This article reviews the structure and regulatory characteristics of DHCR24, and the research of DHCR24 on tumor progression. We summarize the possible mechanisms of DHCR24 promoting tumor progression through reactive oxygen species (ROS), p53, Ras and PI3K-AKT pathways. Through our review, we hope to provide more research ideas and reference value for the application of DHCR24 in tumor prevention and treatment.

Natural Compounds of Salvia L. Genus and Molecular Mechanism of Their Biological Activity

The study of medicinal plants is important, as they are the natural reserve of potent biologically active compounds. With wide use in traditional medicine and the inclusion of several species (as parts and as a whole plant) in pharmacopeia, species from the genus Salvia L. are known for the broad spectrum of their biological activities. Studies suggest that these plants possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiangiogenic, hepatoprotective, cognitive and memory-enhancing effects. Phenolic acids, terpenoids and flavonoids are important phytochemicals, which are primarily responsible for the medicinal activity of Salvia L. This review collects and summarizes currently available data on the pharmacological properties of sage, outlining its principal physiologically active components, and it explores the molecular mechanism of their biological activity. Particular attention was given to the species commonly found in Kazakhstan, especially to Salvia trautvetteri Regel, which is native to this country.

Lithium and zinc levels along with oxidative status in myocardial infarction: A case-control study

Background

Coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infarction (MI) are the most prevalent diseases globally. While several risk factors for MI are well assessed, the influence of trace elements on MI has not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to evaluate lithium (Li) and zinc (Zn) levels in MI patients and healthy control and assess their relationship with oxidative stress (OS) parameters, such as nitric oxide (NO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC).

Methods

This case-control study was performed on 182 patients with MI and 83 healthy subjects at Shafa Hospital in Kerman, Iran. MI patients were divided into two groups based on the angiography results: those with coronary artery block above 50 % (CAB >50 %, n = 92) and those with coronary artery block below 50 % (CAB <50 %, n = 90). A flame atomic absorption spectrometer was used to detect Li and Zn levels, and biochemical indices were measured by an autoanalyzer. Also, ferric reducing antioxidant power assay and the Griess method were used to measure the amounts of NO and TAC.

Results

The levels of TAC and Li were significantly higher in the control group than in the patient groups (in both CAB >50 % and CAB <50 % groups). Furthermore, in the CAB <50 % group, TAC and Li levels were significantly higher than in the CAB >50 % group. In the Zn levels evaluation, higher concentration was seen in the CAB >50 % group compared to the CAB <50 % group (P < 0.05). Moreover, Zn and NO levels were significantly higher in both CAB groups compared to controls. In continue, Li levels had a positive association with TAC and ejection fraction percentage (EF%) as well as a negative association with NO levels and Zn levels had a significant positive association with NO and a negative association with TAC. In logistic regression analysis, Li, TAC, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol significantly decreased the odds ratio (OR) of MI, whereas Zn, NO, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) significantly increased the OR of MI. Furthermore, the area under the curve (AUC) analysis indicated that Li had the highest AUC for the diagnosis of CAB >50 % (Li < 167 ng/mL), and Zn ≥ 1810 μg/mL increased disease severity.

Conclusion

Our investigation revealed that Li had a protective effect against CAD by decreasing OS and increasing EF%. However, Zn at concentrations higher than 1810 μg/mL was found to be cytotoxic and increased the risk of MI through increased OS. Taken togather, it could be concluded that Li supplementation may decrease the risk of CAD.
