Influence of Nutrient (NPK) Factors on Growth, and Pharmacodynamic Component Biosynthesis of Atractylodes chinensis: An Insight on Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACC), 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl-CoA Reductase (HMGR), and Farnesyl Pyrophosphate Synthase (FPPS) Signaling Responses

Integrated Analysis of Terpenoid Profiles and Full-Length Transcriptome Reveals the Central Pathways of Sesquiterpene Biosynthesis in Atractylodes chinensis (DC.) Koidz

Atractylodes chinensis (DC.) Koidz. is an aromatic and medicinal plant in East Asia. The primary bioactive compounds in this species are sesquiterpenes, particularly β-eudesmol, hinesol, and atractylon. Cultivation techniques require improvement to meet the medicinal demands of this species. In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of an A. chinensis germplasm showed its essential oil contained various sesquiterpenes, including a high relative ratio of β-eudesmol. Full-length transcriptome profiling of A. chinensis revealed 26 genes related to terpenoid biosynthesis. These genes belonged to 13 gene families, including five in the isopentenyl pyrophosphate synthase gene family and four in the terpene synthase gene family. The functions of the four terpene synthase genes were proposed based on gene expression patterns and phylogenetic relationships: one was thought to encode monoterpene synthase and three to encode sesquiterpene synthase. Based on the results, the central biosynthesis pathways of the major sesquiterpenes in the A. chinensis rhizome were proposed, and three sesquiterpene synthase genes were identified as expressed in the rhizome for the first time. AcHMGR, AcFPPS, and the three sesquiterpene synthase genes were proposed as potential targets for molecular breeding in A. chinensis to enhance its sesquiterpene content.

Plant-derived bioactive compounds as key players in the modulation of immune-related conditions

The immune system is a complex and fundamental network for organism protection. A minimal unbalance in the host defense system homeostasis can originate severe repercussions in human health. Fundamentally, immune-related diseases can arise from its compromise (immunodeficiency diseases), overactivation against itself (autoimmune diseases) or harmless substances (allergies), and failure of eliminating the harmful agent (chronic inflammation). The notable advances and achievements in the immune system diseases pathophysiology have been allowing for a dramatic improvement of the available treatments. Nevertheless, they present some drawbacks, including the inappropriate benefit/risk ratio. Therefore, there is a strong and urgent need to develop effective therapeutic strategies. Nature is a valuable source of bioactive compounds that can be explored for the development of new drugs. Particularly, plants produce a broad spectrum of secondary metabolites that can be potential prototypes for innovative therapeutic agents. This review describes the immune system and the inflammatory response and examines the current knowledge of eight plants traditionally used as immunomodulatory medicines (Boswellia serrata, Echinacea purpurea, Laurus nobilis, Lavandula angustifolia, Olea europaea, Salvia officinalis, Salvia rosmarinus, and Taraxacum officinale). Moreover, the issues responsible for possible biologic readout inconsistencies (plant species, age, selected organ, developmental stage, growth conditions, geographical location, drying methods, storage conditions, solvent of extraction, and extraction method) will also be discussed. Furthermore, a detailed list of the chemical composition and the immunomodulatory mechanism of action of the bioactive compounds of the selected plant extracts are presented. This review also includes future perspectives and proposes potential new avenues for further investigation.

Optimal NPK Fertilizer Combination Increases Panax ginseng Yield and Quality and Affects Diversity and Structure of Rhizosphere Fungal Communities

Soil microorganisms affect crop rhizospheres via the transformation and transport of nutrients, which has important influences on soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and plant yield and health in agroecosystems. There are few reports on the effects of fertilizer application on the growth of Panax ginseng (C. A. Mey.) or the structure of its rhizosphere microbial communities. In this study, an orthogonal experimental design was used to explore the effects of nine different combinations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilizers with different amounts and proportions on ginseng growth and accumulation of ginsenosides and the structure of rhizosphere soil fungal communities. Soil without fertilization was the control. With the combined application of NPK, ginseng growth and development increased. The fertilization scheme N₃P₁K₃, with N fertilizer at 50 g·m⁻², P fertilizer at 15 g·m⁻², and K fertilizer at 60 g·m⁻², had the most comprehensive benefit and significantly increased ginseng rhizome biomass and ginsenoside contents (Rg1, Re, Rf, Rg2, Rb1, Ro, Rc, Rb2, Rb3, and Rd). Amplicon sequencing showed that NPK application increased the diversity of fungal communities in ginseng rhizospheres, whereas richness was bidirectionally regulated by proportions and amounts of NPK. Ascomycota was the dominant fungal phylum in ginseng rhizosphere soil, and relative abundances decreased with combined NPK application. Combined NPK application increased the relative abundance of potential beneficial fungi, such as Mortierella, but decreased that of potentially pathogenic fungi, such as Fusarium. Correlation analysis showed that potential beneficial fungi were significantly positively correlated with ginseng rhizome yield and ginsenoside contents, whereas the opposite relation was observed with potential pathogenic fungi. Thus, in addition to directly increasing crop growth, precise NPK application can also increase crop adaptability to the environment by shaping specific microbial communities. The results of this study suggest that the combined effects of biotic and abiotic processes on agricultural production determine crop yield and quality.
