I will speak up if I feel energetic: Effects of supervisor humor on employee voice

Extant literature on supervisor humor predominantly documents its beneficial effects on the organization, but its dark side receives little attention. Drawing on ego depletion theory, we proposed a conceptual model to examine the effects of two interpersonal types of supervisor humor (i.e., affiliative humor and aggressive humor) on employee voice. An empirical study with a sample covering 257 employees in China indicated that supervisor aggressive humor was negatively related to voice behaviors via depleting employees' resource. In contrast, supervisor affiliative humor was positively related to voice behaviors owing to less depletion of employees. Contrary to prediction, emotional intelligence enhanced the positive effect of supervisor aggressive humor on employees' depletion. Important theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

Does perceived organizational support matter? The effect of high-commitment performance management on supervisors' performance

The current research aims to investigate the connection between supervisors' perceived high-commitment performance management (HCPM) and their performances (in-role, extra-role, and deviant work behavior). In addition, this paper aims to examine how perceived organizational support (POS) mediates the above relationship. The paper employs the social exchange theory as the theoretical lens to develop and suggest a positive motivational work environmental model. Our model is tested on a sample of 430 supervisors from ready-made garment (RMG) organizations, Bangladesh. Using the PLS-SEM, our model examines the direct and indirect effects of HCPM and POS on job performances. We find supports for the existence of a positive relationship from HCPM to job performance through POS mediating such a relationship. Future studies may investigate the prospective of HCPM and POS to create ideal work environments that boost employee productivity and benefit enterprises.

Talent management: the way out of poor task performance

Purpose

The paper investigates how talent management influences employee performance in the banking industry in Nigeria. Despite various economic policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria aimed at reshaping the banking industry, talent management and development for the digital age is the concern of the most bank. Rapid digital transformation has been affecting the banking industry, which requires the banking industry to rethink a strategic way to achieve inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth.

Design/methodology/approach

The questionnaires were used to obtain information from 302 full-time employees of the top five banks in the Nigerian banking industry. The collected data were analyzed using the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM).

Findings

This study shows that talent attraction and development significantly and positively influence task performance. In comparison, talent retention was found to have no significant effect on task performance. This study found that work engagement positively mediates talent attraction, development and task performance. Work engagement did not mediate the relationship between talent retention and task performance.

Originality/value

For the industry to motivate high-performing employees in this digital economy, talent management will need to be carefully designed to create the most enduring competitive advantage. In conclusion, this study will benefit the Nigerian banking industry by apprehending the predictors of task performance so that the prevalence of poor task performance among the employees is well managed.

Voice Endorsement and Employee Safety Voice Behavior in Construction Projects: The Mediating Role of Leader-Member Exchange

Employee safety voice refers to publishing opinions and suggestions related to workplace safety issues. In recent years, it has gradually become a hot topic in the field of organizational safety management research. Voice endorsement is the leader’s positive feedback to employees, and it is a necessary condition and key link for employees to achieve the purpose of voicing. Although there are many types of research on employee safety voice behavior and voice endorsement, few studies have explored the relationship between the two. Therefore, through a paired questionnaire survey of 214 leaders and 344 employees in construction projects, drawing on social exchange theory, using leader-member exchange (LMX) as a mediating variable, we discuss the mechanism of voice endorsement on employee safety voice behavior. The results show that in construction projects, voice endorsement negatively affects employee safety voice behavior and LMX, and LMX positively affects employee safety voice behavior. LMX has a mediating role in the relationship between voice endorsement and employee safety voice behavior. The results of this study can provide useful guidance for improving employee safety voice behavior management.
