Virtual reality (VR) has experienced a remarkable evolution over recent decades, evolving from its initial applications in specific military domains to becoming a ubiquitous and easily accessible technology. This thorough review delves into the intricate domain of VR within healthcare, seeking to offer a comprehensive understanding of its historical evolution, theoretical foundations, and current adoption status. The examination explores the advantages of VR in enhancing the educational experience for medical students, with a particular focus on skill acquisition and retention. Within this exploration, the review dissects the applications of VR across diverse medical disciplines, highlighting its role in surgical training and anatomy/physiology education. While navigating the expansive landscape of VR, the review addresses challenges related to technology and pedagogy, providing insights into overcoming technical hurdles and seamlessly integrating VR into healthcare practices. Additionally, the review looks ahead to future directions and emerging trends, examining the potential impact of technological advancements and innovative applications in healthcare. This review illuminates the transformative potential of VR as a tool poised to revolutionize healthcare practices.

Abstract
Background Palliative care patients desire more symptom management interventions that are complementary to their medical treatment. Within the multi-professional team, nurses could help support pain management with non-pharmacological interventions feasible for their practice and adaptable to palliative care patients' needs. Objectives The objective was to identify non-pharmacological interventions feasible in the nursing scope of practice affecting pain in palliative care patients. Design A systematic review. Data sources and methods A defined search strategy was used in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Embase. Search results were screened double-blinded. Methodological quality was double-appraised with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools. Data were extracted from selected studies and the findings were summarized. The methodological quality, quantity of studies evaluating the same intervention, and consistency in the findings were synthesized in a best-evidence synthesis to rank evidence as strong, moderate, limited, mixed, or insufficient. Results Out of 2385 articles, 22 studies highlighted non-pharmacological interventions in the nursing scope of practice. Interventions using massage therapy and virtual reality demonstrated most evidentiary support for pain management, while art therapy lacked sufficient evidence. Mindful breathing intervention showed no significant reduction in pain. Hypnosis, progressive muscle-relaxation-interactive-guided imagery, cognitive-behavioral audiotapes, wrapped warm footbath, reflexology, and music therapy exhibited promising results in pain reduction, whereas mindfulness-based stress reduction program, aromatherapy, and aroma-massage therapy did not. Conclusion Despite not all studies reaching significant changes in pain scores, non-pharmacological interventions can be clinically relevant to palliative care patients. Its use should be discussed for its potential value and nurses to be trained for safe practice. Methodologically rigorous research for non-pharmacological interventions in nursing scope of practice for pain relief in palliative care patients is necessary. Trial registration The protocol for this study is registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020196781).

Abstract
This retrospective bibliometric analysis was conducted to explore research trends and identify studies in fields of nursing, virtual reality, and cancer. Data were obtained from the Web of Science database using an advanced search strategy. The study data were analyzed using the R Studio software and visualized using VOSviewer. A total of 594 studies were retrieved and analyzed from January 1995 to December 2021. It was determined that 59.4% of the studies were research articles and that these studies had been conducted by 2771 authors. The reviewed studies were produced by researchers from 25 countries and were published in 29 different journals. Of these, 169 were conducted by researchers in the United States. "Virtual reality" and "nursing" were found to be prominent topics. Studies on virtual reality in patients with cancer in the field of nursing have increased over the past 8 years. Researchers have actively conducted studies in this field. Prominent studies have covered various patients with cancer in all age groups and palliative care processes. It was seen that the majority of the studies were randomized controlled trials, reviews, and systematic reviews. In addition, studies have used virtual reality as a distraction method in the management of symptoms in patients with breast, lung, and pediatric cancers undergoing chemotherapy treatment. This study provides a detailed and up-to-date analysis of the findings obtained from the Web of Science database by emphasizing bibliometric models of virtual reality technologies in nursing patients with cancer. We believe that the current data on the use of virtual reality applications in patients with cancer will guide the clinical practice and scientific studies of healthcare professionals.

Abstract
Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology that can provide a nonpharmacological approach to symptom management for those with serious illnesses. The VR platform offers a unique perspective to connect patients with places and experiences they might otherwise miss. This rapid review aims to present the current literature on the uses and benefits of VR for palliative care and hospice patients. Through a systematic process, we identified 14 articles published between 2018 and 2023 that used VR as an interventional strategy for symptom management. The VR equipment includes a head-mounted display, such as the Oculus Go, and sometimes requires hand controllers or joysticks. Virtual reality software was contained exclusively in the head-mounted displays or required a laptop. Nature scenes, memorable locations, and the solar system are examples of options patients could select for the VR experience. Assessments of the intervention were measured before, during, after, and several hours afterward to evaluate benefits and potential adverse effects. Pain was the predominant symptom assessed in the studies. Overall, most of the studies focused on establishing the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of VR using a single-arm interventional method. Future research should implement randomized controlled trials, increase sample size, and expand to pediatric populations.

Abstract
During the pandemic, telemedicine and telehealth interventions have been leading in maintaining the continuity of care independently of patients' physical location. However, the evidence available about the effectiveness of the telehealth approach for advanced cancer patients with chronic disease is limited. This interventional randomized pilot study aims to evaluate the acceptability of a daily telemonitoring of five vital parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygenation, blood pressure, and body temperature) using a medical device in advanced cancer patients with relevant cardiovascular and respiratory comorbidities assisted at home. The purpose of the current paper is to describe the design of the telemonitoring intervention in a home palliative and supportive care setting with the objective of optimizing the management of patients, improving both their quality of life and psychological status and the caregiver's perceived care burden. This study may improve scientific knowledge regarding the impact of telemonitoring. Moreover, this intervention could foster continuous healthcare delivery and closer communication among the physician, patient and family, enabling the physician to have an updated overview of the clinical trajectory of the disease. Finally, the study may help family caregivers to maintain their habits and professional position and to limit financial consequences.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION With the worsening of population ageing globally, the number of the elderly with chronic and incurable diseases such as malignant tumours is gradually increasing, and the need for palliative care is growing. As a primary task in the end-of-life phase, symptom management is an essential aspect of palliative care, which aims to alleviate distressing symptoms of terminally ill patients and improve their quality of life. Virtual reality (VR) technology, which allows the creation of simulated environments in which a three-dimensional experience is generated, has been increasingly used in palliative care for symptom management. Therefore, we aim to conduct a systematic review to investigate the effects of VR-based interventions on end-of-life patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This protocol for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis will be prepared following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 statement. We will conduct a series of searches from inception to 31 July 2022 in the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, JBI, EBSCO, CNKI, Wanfang and SinoMed. The key concepts of 'virtual reality' and 'end-of-life' will be combined in each database using both free-text terms and controlled vocabulary terms (eg, MeSH/Emtree terms), if available. Two independent reviewers will use raw data to explore the effectiveness of VR for symptom management in end-of-life patients. The Cochrane Risk-of-Bias tool will be used to assess the risk of bias of included studies. Disagreements will be resolved by a third independent reviewer to reach a consensus. For the included articles, Review Manager software will be used for data synthesis and I2 statistics will be used to measure the heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses will be used to identify the source of heterogeneity. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION As this is a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis, patients will not be included in this study. For this reason, ethical approval is not required. In order to disseminate the research findings, the results and conclusions of this review will be submitted to a worldwide journal. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022344679.

Abstract
Objective Virtual reality is increasingly used in healthcare settings. Potentially, it's use in palliative carecould have a positive impact; however, there is limited evidence on the scope, purpose and patient outcomes relating to virtual reality use in this context. The objective of this scoping review is to chart the literature on virtual reality use in palliative care, identifying any evidence relating to biopsychosocial patient outcomes which could support its use in practice. Methods A scoping review of the literature, involving . a systematic search across 10 electronic bibliographic databases in December 2021, . Eligibility criteria were primary research studies, of any research designwithin a 10-year timeframe, which reported on virtual reality use and patient outcomes in palliative care. A total of 993 papers were identified, andcomprehensive screening resulted in 10 papers for inclusion. Results This scoping review identified 10 papers addressing virtual reality in palliative care, published within a three-year timeframe 2019-2021. Research methodologies included mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative. The evidence highlightsvirtual reality use with patients receiving palliative care in a variety of settings, and data around useability, feasibility and acceptability is positive. However, the evidence regarding biopsychosocial patient outcomes linked to virtual reality use is limited. Conclusion Virtual reality is gathering momentum in palliative care and is potentially a helpful intervention; however more research is needed to underpin the evidence base supporting its application, particularly in understanding the impact on biopsychosocial patient outcomes and ascertaining the best approach for measuring intervention effectiveness.

Abstract
Impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic, the human sub-health in national high-tech zones (hereinafter referred to as high-tech zones) has become more prominent. It is critical for the mental sub-health group in the high-tech zone to relieve the anxiety and tension caused by the pressure of life and work. This paper uses SketchUp virtual engine (Unity 2019) software, and 3D roaming technology to carry out the ecological landscape transformation design of the Baotzixi ecological corridor in the East Lake High-tech Zone, to construct a 3D roaming landscape scene and measure its therapeutic effect by inviting subjects to participate in an interactive experience experiment on the ErgoLAB platform. The results illustrate that: (1) the thermogram trend shows that the more attractive the 3D roaming landscape scene is, the stronger the subjects' interest is; (2) the participants have a positive emotional arousal state in the immersive experience of the 3D roaming landscape scene after the modification design; and (3) the mean skin conductance (SC) fluctuation variance of the subjects is 5.819%, indicating that the healing effect is significant in the state of positive emotional arousal. The research results show that there is a connection between the subjects and the 3D roaming landscape scene after the transformation design of "high interest, emotional arousal and significant healing".

Abstract
Background The application of virtual reality (VR) in clinical settings is growing rapidly, with encouraging results. As VR has been introduced into complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), a systematic review must be undertaken to understand its current status. Aim This review aims to evaluate and summarize the current applications of VR in CAM, as well as to explore potential directions for future research and development. Methods After a brief description of VR technology, we discuss the past 20 years of clinical VR applications in the medical field. Then, we discuss the theoretical basis of the combination of VR technology and CAM, the research thus far, and practical factors regarding usability, etc., from the following three main aspects: clinical application, teaching, and scientific research. Finally, we summarize and propose hypotheses on the application of VR in CAM and its limitations. Results Our review of the theoretical underpinnings and research findings to date leads to the prediction that VR and CAM will have a significant impact on future research and practice. Conclusion Although there is still much research needed to advance the science in this area, we strongly believe that VR applications will become indispensable tools in the toolbox of CAM researchers and practitioners and will only grow in relevance and popularity in the era of digital health.

Abstract
The photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal has been applied in various research fields, with promising results for its future clinical application. However, there are several sources of variability that, if not adequately controlled, can hamper its application in pervasive monitoring contexts. This study assessed and characterized the impact of several sources of variability, such as physical activity, age, sex, and health state on PPG signal quality and PPG waveform parameters (Rise Time, Pulse Amplitude, Pulse Time, Reflection Index, Delta T, and DiastolicAmplitude). We analyzed 31 24 h recordings by as many participants (19 healthy subjects and 12 oncological patients) with a wristband wearable device, selecting a set of PPG pulses labeled with three different quality levels. We implemented a Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) model to evaluate the impact of the aforementioned factors on PPG signal quality. We then extracted six parameters only on higher-quality PPG pulses and evaluated the influence of physical activity, age, sex, and health state on these parameters with Generalized Linear Mixed Effects Models (GLMM). We found that physical activity has a detrimental effect on PPG signal quality quality (94% of pulses with good quality when the subject is at rest vs. 9% during intense activity), and that health state affects the percentage of available PPG pulses of the best quality (at rest, 44% for healthy subjects vs. 13% for oncological patients). Most of the extracted parameters are influenced by physical activity and health state, while age significantly impacts two parameters related to arterial stiffness. These results can help expand the awareness that accurate, reliable information extracted from PPG signals can be reached by tackling and modeling different sources of inaccuracy.

Abstract
Pain assessment represents the first fundamental stage for proper pain management, but currently, methods applied in clinical practice often lack in providing a satisfying characterization of the pain experience. Automatic methods based on the analysis of physiological signals (e.g., photoplethysmography, electrodermal activity) promise to overcome these limitations, also providing the possibility to record these signals through wearable devices, thus capturing the physiological response in everyday life. After applying preprocessing, feature extraction and feature selection methods, we tested several machine learning algorithms to develop an automatic classifier fed with physiological signals recorded in real-world contexts and pain ratings from 21 cancer patients. The best algorithm achieved up to 72% accuracy. Although performance can be improved by enlarging the dataset, preliminary results proved the feasibility of assessing pain by using physiological signals recorded in real-world contexts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Virtual reality (VR) opens a variety of therapeutic options to improve symptom burden in patients with advanced disease. Until to date, only few studies have evaluated the use of VR therapy in the context of palliative care. This case series aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of VR therapy in a population of palliative care patients. METHODS In this single-site case series, we report on six palliative care patients undergoing VR therapy. The VR therapy consisted of a one-time session ranging between 20 to 60 minutes depending on the patient's needs and the content chosen for the VR sessions. A semi-structured survey was conducted and the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) and the Distress Thermometer were performed pre- and post-intervention. RESULTS Overall, VR therapy was well accepted by all patients. Five out of six patients reported having appreciated VR therapy. There were individual differences of perceived effects using VR therapy. The semi-structured survey revealed that some patients felt a temporary detachment from their body and that patients were able to experience the VR session as a break from omnipresent worries and the hospital environment ("I completely forgot where I am"). There was a considerable reduction in the total ESAS score post-treatment (T0 ESASTot = 27.2; T1 ESASTot = 18.8) and a slightly reduction in distress (T0 DTTot = 4.4; T1 DTTot = 3.8). However, two patients were more tired after the intervention.Significance of Results: Our preliminary results demonstrate that VR therapy is acceptable, feasible and safe for use within a palliative care population and appears to be a viable treatment option. Clinical trials are both warranted and necessary to confirm any therapeutic effects of VR therapy, as is the need to tailor VR systems better for use in palliative care settings.
