Trends of Acupuncture Therapy on Depression From 2011 to 2020: A Bibliometric Analysis

A comprehensive overview of acupuncture therapy over the past 20 years: Machine learning-based bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Acupuncture, a therapy created by the ancient Chinese, has been gaining increasing popularity and acceptance worldwid. The surge in the number of publications on acupuncture therapy has posed significant challenges for researchers in effectively managing the vast amount of information. This study aimed to analyze the themes and topics of the scientific publications related to acupuncture therapy in the past two decades by machine learning.

METHODS

The MeSH term "Acupuncture Therapy" was used for searching publications from 1st January, 2004-31 st December, 2023 on the PubMed database, while the R platform was adopted to obtain associated data. A topic network was constructed by latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and the Louvain algorithm.

RESULTS

A total of 17,584 publications were finally recruited in this article. The publications were derived from 57 countries, with China, The United States and England being the top three countries. "Acupuncture Points", "Treatment outcome", "Electroacupuncture" were the most concerned MeSH terms. Four clusters and 50 branched topics were recognized by LDA and network analyses. "Comparative Efficacy", "Biochemical Analysis", "Symptomatic Treatment", "Professional Practice" and "Clinical Trials" are hotspots identified by LDA. "Neurotransmitter", "Meta-Analysis" and "Literature Review" have presented as new research hotspots.

CONCLUSIONS

Acupuncture therapy has obtained increasing attention over the past two decades. Most of the studies focus on the mechanisms especially the analgesic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, more researches such as "Neurotransmitter" will continue to advance. Besides, "meta-analysis" and "literature reviews" are increasingly common, providing more comprehensive and credible evidence for acupuncture therapy.

Research Trends of Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapies on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapies have shown great improvement in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, yet no bibliometric analysis on TCM therapies for COPD exists.

SUMMARY

A comprehensive literature search was conducted on TCM therapies for COPD within the past decade, utilizing the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. To analyze collaborative patterns among countries/regions, institutions, and authors, as well as identify influential references and emerging research trends, CiteSpace and VOSviewer software were employed. The dataset comprised 625 articles from WOS and 5,641 from CNKI, revealing a consistent growth in COPD-related TCM research over the past 10 years. China emerged as the leading contributor, with a predominant focus on TCM Universities. The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine was the most cited journal, while Medicine published the highest number of articles. Li JS was the most prolific author, and Barnes PJ was the most frequently cited researcher. Key studies by Leung RWM [Eur Respir J. 2013;41(5):1051-7], Li SY [BMC Complement Altern Med. 2012;12:197], and Polkey MI [Chest. 2018;153(5):1116-24] garnered significant attention. Keyword analysis highlighted the prominence of Tai Chi, Chinese herbal medicine, acupoint sticking, acupuncture, lung function, quality of life, and inflammation as core research themes.

KEY MESSAGES

Research on TCM therapies for COPD has gained growing attention over the past decade. Among the most commonly studied TCM interventions are Tai Chi, Chinese herbal medicine, acupoint sticking, and acupuncture. Lung function, quality of life, and inflammation have emerged as key areas of investigation and are likely to remain focal points for future research endeavors.

Research trends of acupuncture therapy on dysmenorrhea from 2002 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

This research wasdesigned to provide a visual analysis of the current status, hotspots, and trends of global acupuncture for dysmenorrhea over the past 2 decades. The literature about acupuncture for dysmenorrhea from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Cite Space (5.6.R3) was used to analyze the volume of publications, journals, authors, cited journals, cited authors, countries, cited references, institutions, and keywords by using standard bibliometric measures. The most productive countries and institutions in this area were China (79) and BeijingUniversity of Chinese Medicine (24). The Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the most published journal (29) and also had the highest number of citations (80). The article by Woo HL (2018) (number of citations: 13) and the article by (centrality: 0.38) were the most representative references. JiangZhu (17) was the most productive author and Dawood MY (47) was the top cited author. The number one keyword in terms of frequency and centrality was 'primary dysmenorrhea", and the leading hotspot from 2002 to 2022 was "Functional connectivity". The three forefront topics were "prevalence", "impact"and "point'. This research is thefirst bibliometric analysis of the current situation and new trends about acupuncture for dysmenorrhea in the past 20 years using CiteSpace. It offered some information on acupuncture for dysmenorrhea and valuable information for researchers to identify prospective collaborators, partner institutions, popular topics, and research frontiers.

Qi stagnation and qi deficiency are associated with depression in college students

Objective

The current study aims to investigate the correlations between qi stagnation, qi deficiency, and depression levels among college students.

Method

This study investigated 403 college students and measured their levels of depression, qi stagnation, and qi deficiency to analyze the relationship between these three variables. Pearson correlation and linear regression statistical techniques were utilized.

Results

(1) On average, college students reported mild depressive symptoms; (2) college students manifested low levels of qi stagnation and qi deficiency. (3) There exists a strong positive correlation between qi stagnation and qi deficiency; (4) a moderate positive correlation is present between depression and both qi stagnation and qi deficiency among college students. All these results support the mechanism by which qi stagnation and qi deficiency contribute to depression in traditional Chinese medicine theory.

Conclusion

Qi stagnation and qi deficiency are moderately associated with depression levels in college students. It is feasible to use traditional Chinese physical therapy for qi regulation to alleviate depressive symptoms among college students.

Acupuncture for stroke: A bibliometric analysis of global research from 2000 to 2022

Objective

This study aimed to explore the global and future research trends in acupuncture interventions for stroke between 2000 and 2022 using bibliometric analysis.

Method

A bibliometric analysis of literature from 2000 to 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection was conducted in this study. The analysis utilized CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica software to identify the major contributors to publications, including authors, countries, institutions, journals, references, and keywords.

Results

The bibliometric analysis yielded a total of 860 publications. There was a gradual increase in the number of publications over the study period. China published the most articles. Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine was the journal with the greatest number of publications. The most frequently used keywords were "acupuncture," "stroke," and "electroacupuncture."

Conclusion

These analysis uncovers the research trends in acupuncture for stroke spanning 2000 to 2022 and points to prospective research frontiers. This study provides a deeper and more thorough understanding of the connotations of acupuncture for stroke and guidance and support for future research in this field.

Advances in acupuncture regulation on the autonomic nervous system from 2013 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis via citespace

OBJECTIVE

To understand research advances and frontiers of acupuncture regulation on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) over the past decade through a bibliometric analysis.

METHODS

Publications related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the datasets and generate knowledge maps.

RESULTS

A total of 445 relevant publications published between 2013 and 2022 were included in this bibliometric analysis. The number of annual publications fluctuated from 2013 to 2016 but increased gradually from 2016 to 2022. China produced the highest number of publications, while the USA established the most extensive cooperation relationships. China Academy of Chinese Medical Science was the most productive institution. Chen Jiande D.Z. was the most prolific author and Rong Peijing holds the most extensive cooperation network. Han Jisheng was the most co-cited author. Relevant research involved mechanism exploration and clinical efficacy research, and "anti-inflammatory effect" was the most active research topic, especially cholinergic anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The most cited references mainly focused on inflammation. Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disorders were the most active medical conditions studied in this field.

CONCLUSIONS

Research related to acupuncture regulation on the ANS mainly focused on anti-inflammation, and regulating gastrointestinal and cardiovascular function over the past decade. However, the mechanisms of the autonomic effects of acupuncture need further investigation. High-quality clinical studies are required to determine the optimal parameters of acupuncture for clinical application.

A comparative study of bibliometric analysis on old adults' cognitive impairment based on Web of Science and CNKI via CiteSpace

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status, the research hot spots and frontiers of cognitive impairment (CI) on old adults from 2012 to 2022 based on Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) via CiteSpace, and provide new in-sights for researchers.

METHODS

The articles regarding the old adults' CI in the WoS and CNKI were retrieved from 2012 to 2022. CiteSpaceV.6.1.R4 was used to generate network maps.

RESULTS

Four thousand seven hundred thirteen publications and 304 publications from CNKI were retrieved. Overall, from 2012 to 2022, the trend of articles published in WoS and CNKI were increasing. Data from WoS showed that USA, University of California, Petersen RC were the most influential country, institution and author respectively; Folstein MF, Neurology and a diagnosis guideline of mild CI were the most cited author, journal and reference separately; while the keywords of CI could be summarized in 3 aspects: related disease and symptom, risk factors, manifestations. Data from CNKI illustrated that Peking Union Medical College, Dan Liu were the most influential institution and scholar respectively, while the keywords of CI could be summarized in 3 aspects: related disease and symptoms, risk factors, intervention.

CONCLUSION

Articles published on old adults' CI were drawing an increasing amount of attention from 2012 to 2022 both in WoS and CNKI. Keywords of CI in WoS and CNKI both focused on risk factors, related disease and symptom, yet WoS contributed more to the mechanism and CNKI contributed more to the intervention.

Research trends of acupuncture therapy on facial paralysis in a decade spanning 2013-2023: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to employ bibliometric approaches to assess the worldwide scientific achievements in acupuncture for facial paralysis research from 2013 to 2023, and explore the hotspots and frontiers.

METHODS

Articles related to acupuncture facial paralysis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). CiteSpace was utilized to examine journals, publication year, country, institution, cited authors, as well as authors.Research hotspots and trends were analyzed by mapping co-citation networks and keywords.

RESULTS

The period from January 1, 2013, to July 31, 2023, yielded nearly 145 research records on acupuncture treatment for facial paralysis, with a steady increase in the number of annual publications.In terms of the number of publications, OTOLARYNGOLOGY HEAD NECK had the highest publication count, while AM J CHINESE MED exhibited the highest centrality and citation frequency among the cited journals. Further, 54.4 % of publications originated from China, followed by USA (8.2 %) and Germany (8.2 %). Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine stood out with the highest publication volume among institutions. Guntinas-lichius, Orlando was the most prolific author, and PEITERSEN E was the most cited author. The keywords "Randomized controlled trials" and "multicenter" displayed high frequency and centrality, indicating that clinical trials with a randomized controlled design and multicenter studies were prevalent research methods, likely to remain a future trend.

CONCLUSION

Acupuncture's potential in the treatment of facial paralysis merits further research. Authors from different countries/regions and organizations need to eliminate language and academic barriers and strengthen collaboration and communication. Current research hotspots focus on "brain", "nerve", "electrical stimulation", "RCT" and "guidelines". The study of acupuncture mechanisms, especially based on the central nervous system mechanism, may be the future research hotspot.

Managing depression with complementary and alternative medicine therapies: a scientometric analysis and visualization of research activities

Background

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) interventions may prove to be an attractive option for the treatment of depression. The aim of this scientometric analysis is to determine the global scientific output of research regarding managing depression with CAM and identify the hotspots and frontiers within this theme.

Methods

Publications regarding the utilization of CAM for treating depression were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection from 1993 to 2022, and analyzed and visualized by Bibliometrix R-package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace.

Results

A total of 1,710 publications were acquired. The number of annual publications showed an overall rapid upward trend, with the figure peaking at 179 in 2021. The USA was the leading research center. Totally 2,323 distinct institutions involving 7,638 scholars contributed to the research theme. However, most of the cooperation was limited to within the same country, institution or research team. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine was the most productive periodical. The CAM therapies of most interest to researchers were acupuncture and body-mind techniques, such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness. Systematic review and meta-analysis are commonly used methods. "Inflammation," "rating scale" and "psychological stress" were identified as the most studied trend topics recently.

Conclusion

Managing depression with evidence-based CAM treatment is gaining attention globally. Body-mind techniques and acupuncture are growing research hotspots or emerging trending topics. Future studies are predicted to potentially investigate the possible mechanisms of action underlying CAM treatments in reducing depression in terms of modulation of psychological stress and inflammation levels. Cross-countries/institutes/team research collaborations should be encouraged and further enhanced.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Acupuncture Therapy in the Treatment of Musculoskeletal Pain from 2003 to 2022

Background

Acupuncture therapy has been widely used in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain (MP) in many countries around the world. However, there are no bibliometric studies on acupuncture therapy for MP. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the current status, frontiers and hot spots in the use of acupuncture therapy for the treatment of MP.

Methods

Literature on acupuncture therapy for MP was extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection database from 2003 to 2022. CiteSpace 6.2.R4 (64-bit) software was used to analyze the number and centrality of journals, countries, institutions, authors, references and keywords, and the functions of co-occurrence and clustering were applied to draw a visual knowledge map.

Results

Over the past 20 years, the annual journal publications have been on a steady upward trend, with 438 articles published in 143 journals, including Acupuncture in Medicine Journal published the most (28, 6.39%), JAMA-Journal of the American Medical Association was the journal with the highest impact factor (IF = 120.7003), USA dominated with the most publications (140, 31.96%) among 44 countries, and among 196 research organizations Kyung Hee University was the most prolific (19, 4.34%) and Ha, In-Hyuk was the most published author (9, 2.05%). "Acupuncture" is the most popular and highly sought after keywords. "Low back pain" is the keyword with the highest centrality.

Conclusion

This article provides the current situation of the use of acupuncture therapy in the treatment of MP in the past 20 years, and statistical analysis reveals that "low back pain", "knit osteoporosis" and "break cancer" are new research diseases related to acupuncture therapy for MP, and "myobasic trigger point" is a new research direction of acupuncture therapy for MP. Therefore, this study helps researchers grasp the research hotspots and provide certain references for in-depth research and future topic selection.

Global research trends of sham acupuncture: A bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVE

Sham acupuncture has been used as a control in acupuncture efficacy trials. However, questions have been raised about whether it is a physiologically inert placebo. We aimed to understand global research trends and provide guidance for future research by conducting a bibliometric analysis of sham acupuncture studies.

METHODS

Journal articles published to date related to sham acupuncture were retrieved from Web of Science on May 29, 2023. The publication year, country, keyword, author, and organization of the studies were analyzed using the available bibliometric information. Using VOSviewer software, the co-occurrence of keywords in sham acupuncture studies was visualized as a network map by cluster analysis and overlay analysis according to the publication year.

RESULTS

A total of 3428 studies were included in the analysis. Studies on sham acupuncture have been steadily increasing since 1991, with most of the studies conducted in China (1514 studies, 44.17%), followed by the United States (789 studies, 23.02%) and South Korea (277 studies, 8.08%). The keywords of sham acupuncture research were classified into four clusters: evidence synthesis, pain clinical research, mechanism research, and acupressure research. Keyword analysis according to the publication year showed that evidence synthesis on sham acupuncture was recently focused on psychiatric conditions including depression and insomnia through systematic reviews, and clinical and mechanism studies on sham acupuncture were mostly conducted relatively in the past.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the development and global trends of sham acupuncture research to date, suggesting directions for future research.

Articles on hemorrhagic shock published between 2000 and 2021: A CiteSpace-Based bibliometric analysis

Objective

To conduct a bibliometric analysis of literature on hemorrhagic shock published between 2000 and 2021 with the help of Citespace to explore the current status, hotspots and research trends in this regard, with the results presented in a visualized manner.

Methods

The data over the past 22 years were retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database and downloaded as the "Full Record and Cited References". Cooperative analysis, cluster analysis, co-citation analysis, and burst analysis were performed based on the data on countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords through Citespace.

Results

A total of 2027 articles were retrieved. The number of annual publications fluctuated but was generally on an upward trend. The United States stands out as the most productive country (989 articles), the University of Pittsburgh the most productive publishing institution (109 articles), SHOCK the most cited journal (1486 articles), TAO LI the most productive author (40 articles), DEITCH EA the most cited author (261 times of citation), hemorrhagic shock the most frequent keyword (725 times of occurrence), and "traumatic brain injury" the most covered article in keyword clustering (29 articles). The burst analysis revealed Harvard University as the institution with the highest strength value and the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery the most important journal. It was also concluded that HASAN B ALAM, AARON M WILLIAMS, and LIMIN ZHANG may continue to publish high-quality articles in the future. In the meanwhile, both "protect" and "transfusion" were considered the hotspots and trends in current research.

Conclusions

The United States has been a major contributor to the publication of the articles over the past 22 years, with the most productive publishing institution, the most cited journal, and the most cited author all coming from the US. Hemorrhagic shock, injury, resuscitation, trauma, models, activation, expression, fluid resuscitation, rats, and nitric oxide are hot topics in relevant research. According to the keyword burst analysis, the areas related to "protect" and "transfusion" may rise as the research directions in the future. However, since the hotspots in the research of hemorrhagic shock are short-lived and fast-changing, the researchers should pay more attention to the development trend in this field.

The Top 100 Cited Articles on Acupuncture in the Last 20 Years: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Acupuncture has gained increasing international attention in recent decades. The act of incorporating acupuncture treatment into the routine treatment of COVID-19 in China drove us to review the 100 most influential articles of the last 20 years to learn about the current status and trends of acupuncture.

METHOD

Articles related to acupuncture from January 1, 2001, to July 4, 2022, were searched in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database. The top 100 most cited publications were selected, and information was extracted. Software such as VOSviewer, GraphPad Prism, Scimago Graphica, and CiteSpace were used to visualize and analyze the extracted data.

RESULT

The 100 most cited articles were identified, with an average of 218 citations (range: 131-625). The majority of the top 100 articles were from the USA (n = 53). The institution that published the most highly cited papers was Harvard University (n = 16). The most influential team was Klaus Linde's group. Pain was the top-ranked journal in terms of the number of publications. The largest clusters for co-occurrence keyword analysis focused on acupuncture and electroacupuncture analgesia and brain imaging responses to acupuncture stimulation via functional MRI. The two highest strength burst keywords were "randomized controlled trials" and "osteoarthritis," with "randomized controlled trials" being a consistent burst keyword from 2011 to the present.

CONCLUSION

This study provides insight into articles of historical significance in the field of acupuncture through bibliometric analysis. These data should provide clinicians and researchers with insight into future directions related to acupuncture.

Die Einbeziehung der Akupunktur in die Routinebehandlung von COVID-19 in China hat uns dazu veranlasst, die 100 einflussreichsten Artikel der letzten 20 Jahre zu überprüfen, um etwas über den aktuellen Stand und die Trends in der Akupunktur zu erfahren.

Methode

Artikel mit Bezug zu Akupunktur vom 1. Januar 2001 bis 4. Juli 2022 wurden in der Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection Datenbank gesucht. Die 100 am häufigsten zitierten Veröffentlichungen wurden ausgewählt und die Informationen wurden extrahiert. Visualisierung und Analyse der extrahierten Daten erfolgten mithilfe der Software VOSviewer, GraphPad Prism, Scimago Graphica und CiteSpace.

Ergebnis

Es wurden die 100 am häufigsten zitierten Artikel ermittelt mit durchschnittlich 218 Zitierungen (Spanne: 131 bis 625). Der Großteil der 100 meistzitierten Artikel stammte aus den Vereinigten Staaten (n = 53). Die Institution, die die meisten zitierten Artikel veröffentlichte, war die Harvard-Universität (n = 16). Das einflussreichste Team war die Gruppe von Klaus Linde. Was die Zahl der Veröffentlichungen betrifft, war Pain die am häufigsten zitierte Zeitschrift. Bei der Analyse der Koinzidenz von Schlüsselwörtern lag der Fokus der größten Cluster auf Akupunktur-und Elektroakupunktur-Analgesie sowie auf den Reaktionen auf Akupunkturstimulation in den bildgebenden Untersuchungen des Gehirns mittels funktioneller MRT. Schlussfolgerung

Diese Studie bietet einen Einblick in historisch bedeutsame Artikel auf dem Gebiet der Akupunktur mittels bibliometrischer analyse. Diese Daten sollen Klinikern und Forschern einen Einblick in zukünftige Richtungen im Zusammenhang mit Akupunktur geben.

Research on major depression in China: A perspective from bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a major psychiatric disorder with increasing research intensity. However, papers written in languages other than English are less accessible to international readers. This study examined the bibliometric features of English and Chinese language research papers about major depressive disorder in China.

METHODS

The Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were searched for eligible studies. Authorship collaboration networks and keyword co-occurrences were estimated and visualized.

RESULTS

There were 2,220 and 63,306 publications on MDD in the WoS and CNKI between 1990 and 2021, respectively. The number of papers increased annually during the period. For papers written in English, the Journal of Affective Disorders (201; 9.05 %) had the highest activity and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University had the most publications (232; 10.45 %). For papers in Chinese, the highest activity was with the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (1,025; 1.62 %) and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (1,098; 1.73 %). Xiang YT (68; 3.06 %) and Yuan YG (179; 0.28 %) were the most productive authors in the English and Chinese languages, respectively. Keyword analysis showed that English and Chinese publications differed in emphasis (English: related psychiatric conditions, study design, clinical aspects, and assessment instruments; Chinese: somatic comorbidities, antidepressants, related psychiatric conditions, treatment of depression, and electrophysiological).

CONCLUSIONS

The number of scientific papers on MDD increased yearly, and Chinese authors writing in English have an increasing influence. Except for a few authors, productivity and influence were dominated by national universities and specialized medical universities.

Anti-depressant effects of acupuncture: The insights from NLRP3 mediated pyroptosis and inflammation

The NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis, which could affect inflammation response, plays a key role in the development of depression. Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression. In this study, we aimed to determine whether acupuncture could confer antidepressant activity via decreasing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis by reducing inflammation. Here, depression model of rats was induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 4 weeks. Acupuncture group was subjected to acupuncture at the Shangxing (GV23) and Fengfu (GV16) acupoints for 20 min every other day (a total of 14 times). Fluoxetine group was administered with fluoxetine (2.1 mg/kg with the concentration of 0.21 mg/mL) by oral gavage (1 mL/100 g) once a day for 28 days. Rats' depression-like phenotypes were reflected with behavioral tests and biological detection methods. Results showed that acupuncture significantly improved the depression-like behavior of CUMS rat, suppressed the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, GSDMD, IL-1β, IL-18, HMGB1, IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α in the serum and hippocampus, restored the %area of microglia, astrocytes and neuronal cells in the hippocampus. These indicate that acupuncture can prevent CUMS-induced depression-like behaviors by reducing NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis and inflammation.

Mapping the Hot Spots and Evolution Main Path of Whole-Body Vibration Training Since the 21st Century: A Bibliometric Analysis

To evaluate the global scientific output of the research on whole-body vibration training (WBVT) and explore the current status and trends in this field over the past decades using bibliometric methods, we retrieved the literature related to WBVT from 2000 to the present in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We analyzed annual publications, citations, countries, organizations, productive authors, and source 14 journals by the Web of Science online bibliometric analysis. We visualized the WBVT research trends and explored influential organizations and authors through VOSviewer. Then, we constructed a citation chronology map by HistCite to obtain the knowledge base of this field and made a primary citation path analysis by Pajek. Finally, we mined the hot spots of WBVT by BICOMB and gCLUTO. Overall, there were 1,629 publications included in this study between 2000 and 2022. The United States contributed the most publications in this field, and the country with the most active partnership was Spain. The University of Cologne ranked highest among top productive organizations. Bernardo-Filho, Mario, from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, ranked first among the top productive authors. The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research topped the list of journals with the most publications on WBVT by a wide margin. The WBVT research field started from Rittweger’s study on the acute physiological effects of WBVT in 2000, which was divided into two stages. The first stage focused on improving athletic ability, and the second stage gradually turned to the application in medicine. A keyword analysis showed the exercise rehabilitation of several aging chronic diseases was the research trend and hot spot of WBVT. The current study provided a time-based development and a global network hub for WBVT research, contributing to identifying core target diseases of WBVT and providing various insights for researchers in the future.

The Effect of Acupuncture Combined with Aerobic Exercise for Coronary Heart Disease as Cardiac Rehabilitation

Background

The mortality of coronary heart disease continues to rise. Cardiac rehabilitation intervenes the risk factors of cardiovascular disease, improves cardiopulmonary function, maintains healthy psychology, improves the quality of life of patients, and reduces cardiovascular mortality.

Objective

To explore the effect of acupuncture combined with aerobic exercise on cardiopulmonary exercise ability, blood lipid, fatty acid oxidation, and psychology in patients with coronary heart disease.

Methods

Sixty patients with coronary heart disease from February 2018 to October 2020 were randomly divided into two groups: the control group and experimental group. The control group was given an exercise prescription, and the experimental group was given acupuncture combined with an exercise prescription. Before and after the intervention, the cardiopulmonary exercise test, blood lipid, carnitine acyltransferase (CACT), the Self-Rating Somatic Symptom Scale (SSS), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) of the two groups were compared.

Results

The PHQ-9 score was better in the experimental group than in the control group. In both groups, after the intervention, the peak oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold were increased, and blood lipid and PHQ-9 scores were decreased. In the experimental group, the carbon dioxide metabolic equivalent was decreased, CACT was increased, and SSS and GAD-7 scores were decreased, with statistical difference (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Acupuncture combined with aerobic exercise can improve the cardiopulmonary exercise ability, increase fatty acid oxidation, decrease blood lipid, and ameliorate anxiety and depression symptoms of patients with coronary heart disease as cardiac rehabilitation.

Mapping the structure of depression biomarker research: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Depression is a common mental disorder and the diagnosis is still based on the descriptions of symptoms. Biomarkers can reveal disease characteristics for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. In recent years, many biomarkers relevant to the mechanisms of depression have been identified. This study uses bibliometric methods and visualization tools to analyse the literature on depression biomarkers and its hot topics, and research frontiers to provide references for future research.

METHODS

Scientific publications related to depression biomarkers published between 2009 and 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science database. The BICOMB software was used to extract high-frequency keywords and to construct binary word-document and co-word matrices. gCLUTO was used for bicluster and visual analyses of high-frequency keywords. Further graphical visualizations were generated using R, CiteSpace and VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

A total of 14,403 articles related to depression biomarkers were identified. The United States (34.81%) and China (15.68%), which together account for more than half of all publications, can be considered the research base for the field. Among institutions, the University of California, University of London, and Harvard University are among the top in terms of publication number. Three authors (Maes M, Penninx B.W.J.H., and Berk M) emerged as eminent researchers in the field. Finally, eight research hotspots for depression biomarkers were identified using reference co-citation analysis.

CONCLUSION

This study used bibliometric methods to characterize the body of literature and subject knowledge in the field of depression biomarker research. Among the core biomarkers of depression, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cytokines, and oxidative stress are relatively well established; however, research on machine learning, metabolomics, and microRNAs holds potential for future development. We found "microRNAs" and "gut microbiota" to be the most recent burst terms in the study of depression biomarkers and the likely frontiers of future research.
