Internal Consistency and Structural Validity of the Norwegian Translation of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory

The Relationship Between the Perceived Personality Traits of Dentists, Dental Anxiety, Negative Stories, and Negative Experiences with Dental Treatment: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Negative stories about dentists are prevalent in mass media and in social discourse. This study explores the associations between dental anxiety, negative dental stories, and negative dental experiences, and how these phenomena are related to the perception of dentists' personality traits. Methods: An anonymous electronic survey was distributed among students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and 118 students chose to participate in the study. The questionnaire included questions on dental anxiety, negative stories about dental treatment, negative experiences of dental treatment, and ratings of dentists' personality traits. Results: Almost half of the participants (46%) had at least one negative dental experience, while the majority (80%) of the participants had heard a negative story about the dentist. There were significant differences in the ratings of dentists' personality traits based on having previous negative dental experiences and based on dental anxiety scores. Participants without negative dental experiences and with low dental anxiety rated the dentist more favorably in terms of personality traits than anxious participants or participants with negative dental experiences. Negative dental treatment experiences (OR 10.35; p < 0.001) and rating dentists as having low extraversion (OR 0.34; p < 0.05) emerged as the most important predictors of high dental anxiety. Conclusions: The interplay between negative stories about the dentist, dental anxiety, and negative dental experiences should be explored further, as well as the impact of the perceived personality traits of dental health professionals.

Pain Assessment in Oral Medicine through Its Different Dimensions: A Comprehensive Review

Orofacial pain is a complex experience made up of different features and involving various aspects of life. It has demonstrated a connection, especially when chronic, with conditions such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders, through paths that still have not been completely clarified. A deep understanding of orofacial pain and its impact on an individual's life is critical for planning accurate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the components constituting the pain experience, its implications in an individual's life, the different tools for multidimensional pain assessment, and the specific applications for each tool. A comprehensive review was performed using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases. Ninety-five studies, including observational studies, clinical trials, case-control studies, and case reports, were included and analyzed in this review. Orofacial pain assessment exploits several methods, ranging from clinical evaluation to rating scales, questionnaires, and daily diaries. The choice of the correct instrument requires an evaluation of the type of pain experienced, of the patient's characteristics and abilities to complete particular tasks, and finally, of the assessment tool features.

Association between Reaction Times in the Joint Simon Task and Personality Traits

Joint go and no-go effects (joint Simon effects; JSEs) are considered to have a stimulus-response compatibility effect on joint reaction time tasks (joint Simon task) caused by the presence of other people. Additionally, JSEs are known to be associated with various social factors and are therefore a potential clinical marker for communicative function; however, the relationship with the personality that is associated with communication skills remains unclear. In this study, we focused on the association between JSE and personality traits. Thirty Japanese participants (fifteen women) were recruited. First, personality trait scores were obtained using the Japanese version of the ten-item personality inventory before the experiment. Second, we measured reaction times in the joint Simon task and single go and no-go tasks with the go signal presented on the congruent and incongruent sides. At last, we analyzed the association between reaction times and personality traits by using Spearman's correlation analysis. As a result, we observed two pairs with significant correlations: JSE and neuroticism and short reaction times in the joint condition and agreeableness. In conclusion, we identified potential psychological markers associated with the joint Simon task. These findings may lead to an additional hypothesis regarding the neurobiological mechanisms of JSEs.

The Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI): a scoping review of versions, translations and psychometric properties

Background

The Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) is a brief instrument designed to assess the five-factor model (FFM) personality dimensions. It was specifically developed to provide a brief assessment option in situations where using more comprehensive FFM instruments would be unfeasible. The TIPI enjoys widespread use and has been translated into several different languages.

Objective

The aim of this scoping review was to generate an overview of different versions of the TIPI, and their psychometric properties in terms of two aspects of validity (convergent and structural) and two aspects of reliability (internal consistency and test-retest reliability).

Methods

Four databases (PsycINFO, PubPsych, Medline, and Web of Science) were searched for studies exploring psychometric properties of the TIPI (original and/or translated or revised versions), published in English as full-text original research articles. Additionally, manual searches were conducted on the official TIPI website and in reference lists. Studies who utilized the TIPI simply as a measure, without an aim of testing its psychometric properties, were excluded. A descriptive-analytical approach was utilized to generate overviews of available TIPI versions and their psychometric properties.

Results

In a total of 29 studies, 27 versions of the TIPI were identified, covering 18 different languages. Across versions, and evaluated against conventions of acceptable psychometric properties, the TIPI demonstrated acceptable test-retest reliability, somewhat mixed results for convergent and structural validity, and inappropriate internal consistency.

Conclusion

Being a brief instrument, the TIPI is unsurprisingly characterized by certain psychometric shortcomings. However, the TIPI may represent a feasible compromise in instances where it is necessary to strike a balance between maximizing psychometric properties and minimizing survey length.

Assessing the Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) Among Medical College Students

Objective

The Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) was designed as a brief instrument of the Big Five personality traits. This study aimed to explore the internal consistency and structural validity of the Chinese version of TIPI (TIPI-C) in medical college students.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 provinces of China. Spearman–Brown coefficient, standardized Cronbach’s α coefficient, and Cronbach’s α coefficient were applied to estimate the internal consistency. Spearman–Brown coefficient was applied to estimate split-half reliability. Principal components analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to identify the structural validity.

Results

A total of 2223 medical college students recruited from different regions of China were included. The Spearman–Brown coefficients of TIPI-C ranged from 0.129 to 0.786 and the Cronbach’s α coefficients ranged from 0.119 to 0.785. The split-half reliability of the Spearman–Brown coefficient was 0.508. The latent structure of Extraversion, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness complied with the intended structure, and the internal consistency coefficients of these three traits were supported. However, the internal consistency coefficients of Agreeableness and Openness were low and the structural validity was not supported.

Conclusion

TIPI-C primarily stands out as a feasible instrument for brief measurements of the Extraversion, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness domains. Further research is required to evaluate the concurrent validity and the test–retest reliability of TIPI-C in different populations and potentially modify the instrument to be more suitable for the Chinese population.
