Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the short-term (12-wk post-intervention) and long-term (6-month follow-up) effects of two exercise interventions (functional training or Mat Pilates) compared to a control group and a healthy reference group on non-motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease. METHOD 35 individuals with Parkinson's disease were randomized into three groups: functional training, Mat Pilates, and control group, along with 11 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals for the healthy reference group. The exercise groups received twice-weekly 60-min sessions for 12 wk. The control group and healthy reference group maintained routine activities and also received educational lectures during the 12-wk period. Outcome measures included cognition (MoCA), depressive symptoms (BDI), anxiety (BAI), mood (BRUMS), and aging perspective (Sheppard Inventory). RESULTS Short-term effects were observed for the functional training group in the short term for depressive symptoms (p = 0.010) and cognition (p = 0.040), and in the short and long term for anxiety (p = 0.007) and happiness (aging perspective) (p = 0.002). For the Mat Pilates group, effects were observed in cognition (p = 0.048) and confusion (p = 0.049) in the short term, and in depressive symptoms (p < 0.001), anxiety (p = 0.033), happiness (p < 0.001), and loneliness (aging perspective) (p = 0.017) in the short and long term. The control group showed worsening in depressive symptoms (p = 0.030) and confusion (p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Mat Pilates and functional training classes were effective in improving cognition, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and happiness. The control group and healthy reference group did not show significant effects in most studied variables. Both types of exercise can be recommended by professionals working with people with Parkinson's disease. REGISTRATION ReBEC - RBR-6ckggn.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a significant traumatic experience that often leads to chronic stress and mental health challenges. Research has consistently shown that physical activity-especially exercise-can alleviate depressive symptoms; however, the specific biological mechanisms underlying these antidepressant effects remain unclear. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the biological mechanisms of depression and the antidepressant mechanisms of physical activity and explore the biological processes through which exercise exerts its antidepressant effects in breast cancer patients. We focus on the impact of physical activity on inflammation, the endocrine system, glutamate, and other aspects, all of which play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of depression. Moreover, we discuss the heterogeneity of depression in breast cancer patients and the complex interactions between its underlying mechanisms. Additionally, we propose that a deeper understanding of these mechanisms in the breast cancer population can guide the design and implementation of exercise-based interventions that maximize the antidepressant benefits of physical activity. Finally, we summarize the current research and propose future research directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systematic Review of The effects of exercise on inhibitory function interventions for patients with major depressive disorder. METHODS We searched PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and China Science and Technology Journal Database (CQVIP) for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the impact of exercise on inhibitory function in MDD patients, from database inception to July 2024. Two researchers independently evaluated the quality of the included studies using the Risk of Bias (ROB 2.0) tool. Evidence quality was assessed with the GRADE profiler software, and effect sizes were combined using Stata 17.0 software to create forest plots, test for publication bias, and perform sensitivity analyses. RESULTS A total of nine RCTs involving 1038 participants from six countries, published between 2001 and 2022, were included. The average age of participants in both the experimental and control groups was 45 years. Meta-analysis results indicated that exercise significantly improves inhibitory function in MDD patients, with a combined effect size (SMD = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.18-0.77, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that exercise had a statistically significant effect on inhibitory control in MDD patients, with an effect size (SMD = 0.563, p < 0.001). Regarding exercise elements, other types of exercise (resistance exercise RE, mixed exercise ME), duration greater than 45 min, intervention period of ≤12 weeks, frequency of two times per week, and low intensity were found to be more effective, all with statistical significance (SMD = 0.863, p < 0.001; SMD = 0.936, p < 0.001; SMD = 0.525, p = 0.002; SMD = 0.682, p = 0.004; SMD = 0.94, p = 0.00). CONCLUSION Based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) classification systems, a research framework for exercise interventions on executive function in MDD patients was constructed, demonstrating that exercise can improve inhibitory function in MDD with high evidence quality. Our study found that other types of exercise (RE or ME), intervention duration of >45 min, intervention period of ≤12 weeks, frequency of two times per week, and low intensity are more effective for improving inhibitory function in MDD patients. While the overall methodological quality of the literature was good, high heterogeneity existed among studies. Subgroup analysis suggested that sources of heterogeneity included measurement tools, exercise types, exercise intensity, duration, and frequency. Sensitivity analysis indicated that exercise duration and period might be causes of heterogeneity. This study has some limitations as the included literature did not consider disease duration, depression severity, or categorize age groups. However, the findings provide strong evidence for clinical practice and future research on the beneficial effects of exercise on inhibitory function in MDD patients. Abstract
PURPOSE Rotator cuff related shoulder pain is common among older adults. While exercise is often recommended for this condition, the relationship between physical activity levels and self-reported outcomes is unclear. This study investigated whether self-reported outcomes (pain, function, depressive symptoms, self-efficacy, general mental and physical health) relate to physical activity, and whether those who participated in shoulder-specific exercise had better self-reported outcomes than those who performed whole-body exercise. METHODS Forty-six participants with rotator cuff related shoulder pain participated from which 35 had complete datasets. Questionnaires were used to assess physical activity, pain, physical function, general health, and self-efficacy. Physical activity levels were also measured using an accelerometer. RESULTS Neither pain nor other self-reported outcomes were related to subjective or objective physical activity levels. Participants that completed shoulder-specific exercise had significantly higher exercise self-efficacy than those who completed nonspecific exercise (P = .01; d = 0.91). CONCLUSION A significant relationship between pain or self-reported outcomes and physical activity was not identified. Those who self-reported regularly exercising their injured shoulder had higher exercise self-efficacy than those who did not. These findings have clinical implications, suggesting that strategies to boost exercise self-efficacy may be important for older adults with rotator cuff related shoulder pain.

Abstract
Native plants are adaptable in various environmental conditions in part through the production of unique phytochemicals which may have beneficial effects on human health. Native Australian fruits contain higher phytochemical and antioxidant levels than most Western fruits, suggesting potential for greater health benefits arising from their consumption. These beneficial effects, in turn, may be mediated by the inhibition of inflammatory pathways as well as oxidative stress via the regulation of reactive oxygen (ROS) and/or nitrogen (RNS) species levels. Unaccustomed or strenuous exercise causes muscle damage and soreness, that may be driven by increased ROS and inflammation. There is growing interest in the application of polyphenol-rich food supplementation for the alleviation of exercise-induced oxidative stress, for the reduction of exercise-induced inflammation and improvement of muscle recovery. Therefore, the aim of this review was to provide an overview of the phytochemical and bioactive composition of some Australian native plant foods and their potential use for functional food development in the management of muscle recovery and inflammation. Native plant foods and food products could be beneficial for reducing inflammation, though it is important to note that most of the research in this field has been conducted in animal models or in vitro, in addition to there being little data on skeletal muscle inflammation. Further studies, particularly in humans, would be needed to confirm these effects and to determine the appropriate dosages and forms of native foods and food products for consumption to reduce inflammation and enhance muscle recovery.

Abstract
Background Mood and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and comorbid worldwide, with variability in symptom severity that fluctuates over time. Digital phenotyping, a growing field that aims to characterize clinical, cognitive and behavioral features via personal digital devices, enables continuous quantification of symptom severity in the real world, and in real-time. Methods In this study, N=114 individuals with a mood or anxiety disorder (MA) or healthy controls (HC) were enrolled and completed 30-days of ecological momentary assessments (EMA) of symptom severity. Novel real-world measures of anxiety, distress and depression were developed based on the established Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (MASQ). The full MASQ was also completed in the laboratory (in-lab). Additional EMA measures related to extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, and passive activity data were also collected over the same 30-days. Mixed-effects models adjusting for time and individual tested the association between real-world symptom severity EMA and the corresponding full MASQ sub-scores. A graph theory neural network model (DEPNA) was applied to all data to estimate symptom interactions. Results There was overall good adherence over 30-days (MA=69.5%, HC=71.2% completion), with no group difference (t(58)=0.874, p=0.386). Real-world measures of anxiety/distress/depression were associated with their corresponding MASQ measure within the MA group (t's > 2.33, p's < 0.024). Physical activity (steps) was negatively associated with real-world distress and depression (IRRs > 0.93, p's ≤ 0.05). Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation were negatively associated with real-world distress/depression (IRR's > 0.82, p's < 0.001). DEPNA revealed that both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation significantly influenced other symptom severity measures to a greater extent in the MA group compared to the HC group (extrinsic/intrinsic motivation: t(46) = 2.62, p < 0.02, q FDR < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.76; t(46) = 2.69, p < 0.01, q FDR < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.78 respectively), and that intrinsic motivation significantly influenced steps (t(46) = 3.24, p < 0.003, q FDR < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.94). Conclusions Novel real-world measures of anxiety, distress and depression significantly related to their corresponding established in-lab measures of these symptom domains in individuals with mood and anxiety disorders. Novel, exploratory measures of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation also significantly related to real-world mood and anxiety symptoms and had the greatest influencing degree on patients' overall symptom profile. This suggests that measures of cognitive constructs related to drive and activity may be useful in characterizing phenotypes in the real-world.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is currently the most common psychiatric disorder in the world. It characterized by a high incidence of disease with the symptoms like depressed mood, slowed thinking, and reduced cognitive function. Without timely intervention, there is a 20-30% risk of conversion to treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and a high burden for the patient, family and society. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity (PA) is a non-pharmacological treatment that can significantly improve the mental status of patients with MDD and has positive effects on cognitive function, sleep status, and brain plasticity. However, the physiological and psychological effects of different types of PA on individuals vary, and the dosage profile of PA in improving symptoms in patients with MDD has not been elucidated. In most current studies of MDD, PA can be categorized as continuous endurance training (ECT), explosive interval training (EIT), resistance strength training (RST), and mind-body training (MBT), and the effects on patients' depressive symptoms, cognitive function, and sleep varied. Therefore, the present study was based on a narrative review and included a large number of existing studies to investigate the characteristics and differences in the effects of different PA interventions on MDD. The study also investigated the characteristics and differences of different PA interventions in MDD, and explained the neural mechanisms through the results of multimodal brain function monitoring, including the intracranial environment and brain structure. It aims to provide exercise prescription and theoretical reference for future research in neuroscience and clinical intervention in MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although complex in nature, the pathophysiology of depression involves reduced or impaired neuroplastic capabilities. Restoring or enhancing neuroplasticity may serve as a treatment target for developing therapies for depression. Aerobic exercise (AEx) has antidepressant benefits and may enhance neuroplasticity in depression although the latter has yet to be substantiated. Therefore, we sought to examine the acute effect of AEx on neuroplasticity in depression. METHODS Sixteen individuals with (DEP; 13 female; age = 28.5 ± 7.3; Montgomery-Äsberg Depression Rating Scale [MADRS] = 21.3 ± 5.2) and without depression (HC; 13 female; age 27.2 ± 7.5; MADRS = 0.8 ± 1.2) completed three experimental visits consisting of 15 min of low intensity AEx (LO) at 35% heart rate reserve (HRR), high intensity AEx (HI) at 70% HRR, or sitting (CON). Following AEx, excitatory paired associative stimulation (PAS25ms) was employed to probe neuroplasticity. Motor evoked potentials (MEP) were assessed via transcranial magnetic stimulation before and after PAS25ms to indicate acute changes in neuroplasticity. RESULTS PAS25ms primed with HI AEx led to significant increases in MEP amplitude compared to LO and CON. HI AEx elicited enhanced PAS25ms-induced neuroplasticity for up to 1-h post-PAS. There were no significant between-group differences. CONCLUSION HI AEx enhances PAS measured neuroplasticity in individuals with and without depression. HI AEx may have a potent influence on the brain and serve as an effective primer, or adjunct, to therapies that seek to harness neuroplasticity.

Abstract
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, exerting a profound negative impact on quality of life in those who experience it. Depression is associated with disruptions to several closely related neural and cognitive processes, including dopamine transmission, fronto-striatal brain activity and connectivity, reward processing and motivation. Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, reduces depressive symptoms, but the mechanisms driving its antidepressant effects are poorly understood. Here we propose a novel hypothesis for understanding the antidepressant effects of exercise, centred on motivation, across different levels of explanation. There is robust evidence that aerobic exercise decreases systemic inflammation. Inflammation is known to reduce dopamine transmission, which in turn is strongly implicated in effort-based decision making for reward. Drawing on a broad range of research in humans and animals, we propose that by reducing inflammation and boosting dopamine transmission, with consequent effects on effort-based decision making for reward, exercise initially specifically improves 'interest-activity' symptoms of depression-namely anhedonia, fatigue and subjective cognitive impairment - by increasing propensity to exert effort. Extending this framework to the topic of cognitive control, we explain how cognitive impairment in depression may also be conceptualised through an effort-based decision-making framework, which may help to explain the impact of exercise on cognitive impairment. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the antidepressant effects of exercise could inform the development of novel intervention strategies, in particular personalised interventions and boost social prescribing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Loss of long-term potentiation (LTP) expression has been associated with a worse disease course in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS) and represents a pathophysiological hallmark of progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS). Exercise and physical rehabilitation are the most prominent therapeutic approaches to promote synaptic plasticity. We aimed to explore whether physical exercise is able to improve the expression of LTP-like plasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS In 46 newly diagnosed RR-MS patients, we explored the impact of preventive exercise on LTP-like plasticity as assessed by intermittent theta-burst stimulation. Patients were divided into sedentary or active, based on physical activity performed during the 6 months prior to diagnosis. Furthermore, in 18 patients with PMS, we evaluated the impact of an 8-week inpatient neurorehabilitation program on clinical scores and LTP-like plasticity explored using paired associative stimulation (PAS). Synaptic plasticity expression was compared in patients and healthy subjects. RESULTS Reduced LTP expression was found in RR-MS patients compared with controls. Exercising RR-MS patients showed a greater amount of LTP expression compared with sedentary patients. In PMS patients, LTP expression was reduced compared with controls and increased after 8 weeks of rehabilitation. In this group of patients, LTP magnitude at baseline predicted the improvement in hand dexterity. CONCLUSIONS Both preventive exercise and physical rehabilitation may enhance the expression of LTP-like synaptic plasticity in MS, with potential beneficial effects on disability accumulation.

Abstract
Cognitive performance is usually impaired in those with serious mental illness (SMI). Exercise may improve cognitive functioning, but studies examining the effects of exercise in SMI indicate heterogenous findings. To estimate the effects of exercise on cognitive outcomes in people with SMI. Randomized controlled trials evaluating the acute or chronic effects of exercise on cognitive functioning in SMI were searched from inception to December 26th, 2022 on major electronic databases. Random effect meta-analyses were conducted to assess the effects of exercise on over the cognitive domains and Standardized Mean Differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used as the effect size measure. Funnel plots and Egger's test of effect size and the Trim and Fill procedure applied if evidence of publication bias was noted. Methodological quality was assessed using RoB 2. A total of 15 chronic (1 acute), 936 participants (46.7% women). Exercise showed large effects on reasoning and problem solving; small effects on executive functioning. Per diagnosis, exercise showed moderate positive effects on executive functioning and large effects on processing speed in people with depression; large effects on reasoning and problem solving in people with schizophrenia. The present study indicates a large beneficial effect of chronic physical exercise on reasoning and problem solving and small effects on executive functioning in people with SMI.

Abstract
Working memory (WM) deficits are recognized as serious cognitive impairment in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This review aims to clarify the effects of impaired WM function in patients with MDD and explore non-invasive and effective treatments that can be adopted in clinical practice. This review (1) synthesizes extant literature examining brain function and brain areas in terms of WM in individuals with depression, (2) utilizes the outcomes of the studies presented in this review to discuss the effects of impaired WM function on cognitive processing in individuals with depression, (3) integrates the treatments explored in current studies and (4) provides some suggestions for future research. We found that (1) central executive (CE) components affect the processing of WM, and this might be one of the factors influencing cognitive biases, as it is implicated in repetitive negative thinking and rumination; (2) the left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the regions of the default mode network (DMN) play a vital role in CE functioning; and (3) psychotherapy, cognitive training, exercise and physical therapy can be used as complementary treatments for MDD.

Abstract
Executive function is among the most affected cognitive dimensions in depression. Physical exercise may improve executive function (e.g., working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility), although this is without consensus on adults with depression. Through this systematic review, we aim to elucidate the effects of physical exercise programs on executive functions in adults with depression. The literature search was performed in four relevant electronic databases, combining keywords and medical subject headings, from inception until September 2022. Controlled interventions, involving adults with depression, and reporting working memory, inhibition, and/or cognitive flexibility pre-post-intervention data, were considered includable. Results from meta-analyses included effect size (ES, i.e., Hedges' g) values reported with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs), with p set at ≤0.05. Seven studies were included, including 202 men and 457 women (age: 21.0-51.2 years; mild-moderate depression). For working memory, a small favoring effect was observed in the experimental groups compared with controls (ES = 0.33, 95%CI = 0.04-0.61; p = 0.026; I2 = 64.9%). For inhibition, physical exercise had a small favoring non-significant effect compared with controls (ES = 0.28, 95%CI = -0.17-0.74; p = 0.222; I2 = 72.4%). Compared with the control group, physical exercise had a trivial effect on cognitive flexibility (ES = 0.09, 95%CI = -0.21-0.39; p = 0.554; I2 = 68.4%). In conclusion, physical exercise interventions may improve working memory behavioral measures in adults with mild-to-moderate depression when compared with active and passive control conditions. However, the reduced number of available high-quality studies precludes more lucid conclusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of exercise interventions in the treatment of mental health disorders is well known, but research is lacking on the most efficient exercise type for specific mental health disorders. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to compare and rank the effectiveness of various exercise types in the treatment of mental health disorders. METHODS The PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL databases, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials as well as Google Scholar were searched up to December 2021. We performed pairwise and network meta-analyses as well as meta-regression analyses for mental health disorders in general and each type of mental health disorder, with alterations in symptom severity as the primary outcome. RESULTS A total of 6456 participants from 117 randomized controlled trials were surveyed. The multimodal exercise (71%) had the highest probability of being the most efficient exercise for relieving depressive symptoms. While resistance exercise (60%) was more likely to be the most effective treatment for anxiety disorder, patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) benefited more from mind-body exercise (52%). Furthermore, resistance exercise (31%) and multimodal exercise (37%) had more beneficial effects in the treatment of the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, respectively. The length of intervention and exercise frequency independently moderated the effects of mind-body exercise on depressive (coefficient = 0.14, p = .03) and negative schizophrenia (coefficient = 0.96, p = .04) symptoms. CONCLUSION Multimodal exercise ranked best for treating depressive and negative schizophrenic symptoms, while resistance exercise seemed to be more beneficial for those with anxiety-related and positive schizophrenic symptoms. Mind-body exercise was recommended as the most promising exercise type in the treatment of PTSD. However, the findings should be treated with caution due to potential risk of bias in at least one dimension of assessment and low-to-moderate certainty of evidence. Abstract
Stress resilience, and behavioural and cardiovascular impacts of chronic stress, are theorised to involve integrated neuro-endocrine/inflammatory/transmitter/trophin signalling. We tested for this integration, and whether behaviour/emotionality, together with myocardial ischaemic tolerance, are consistently linked to these pathways across diverse conditions in male C57Bl/6 mice. This included: Restraint Stress (RS), 1 hr restraint/day for 14 days; Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS), 7 stressors randomised over 21 days; Social Stress (SS), 35 days social isolation with brief social encounters in final 13 days; and Control conditions (CTRL; un-stressed mice). Behaviour was assessed via open field (OFT) and sucrose preference (SPT) tests, and neurobiology from frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampal transcripts. Endocrine factors, and function and ischaemic tolerance in isolated hearts, were also measured. Model characteristics ranged from no behavioural or myocardial changes with homotypic RS, to increased emotionality and cardiac ischaemic injury (with apparently distinct endocrine/neurobiological profiles) in CUMS and SS models. Highly integrated expression of HPA axis, neuro-inflammatory, BDNF, monoamine, GABA, cannabinoid and opioid signalling genes was confirmed across conditions, and consistent/potentially causal correlations identified for: i) Locomotor activity (noradrenaline, ghrelin; FC Crhr1, Tnfrsf1b, Il33, Nfkb1, Maoa, Gabra1; hippocampal Il33); ii) Thigmotaxis (adrenaline, leptin); iii) Anxiety-like behaviour (adrenaline, leptin; FC Tnfrsf1a; hippocampal Il33); iv) Depressive-like behaviour (ghrelin; FC/hippocampal s100a8); and v) Cardiac stress-resistance (noradrenaline, leptin; FC Il33, Tnfrsf1b, Htr1a, Gabra1, Gabrg2; hippocampal Il33, Tnfrsf1a, Maoa, Drd2). Data support highly integrated pathway responses to stress, and consistent adipokine, sympatho-adrenergic, inflammatory and monoamine involvement in mood and myocardial disturbances across diverse conditions.

Abstract
Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder experienced by the world's population. Mechanisms associated with depression-like behavior have not been fully investigated. Among the therapeutic solution for depression, exercise is considered an important regulator attenuating depressive neuropathology. Exercise has been reported to boost the secretion of myokines such as irisin and myostatin in skeletal muscles. Myokines secreted during exercise are involved in various cellular responses including the endocrine and autocrine systems. Especially, irisin as a cleaved version of fibronectin domain-containing protein 5 has multiple functions such as white fat-browning, energy expenditure increase, anti-inflammatory effects, and mitochondrial function improvement in both systemic circulation and central nervous system. Furthermore, irisin activates energy metabolism-related signaling peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha and memory formation-related signaling brain-derived neurotrophic factor involved in depression. However, the role and mechanism of irisin in depression disorder is not obvious until now. Here, we review recent evidences regarding the therapeutic effect of irisin in depression disorder. We suggest that irisin is a key molecule that suppresses several neuropathological mechanisms involved in depression.
