Character Strengths Across Disabilities: An International Exploratory Study and Implications for Positive Psychiatry and Psychology

Examining cognitive accessibility of the VIA Inventory of Strengths for adults with intellectual disability

BACKGROUND

We evaluated cognitive accessibility of the VIA Inventory of Strengths Youth short form with adults with intellectual disability for use in strengths-based practice.

METHODS

We conducted cognitive testing with adults with intellectual disability (n = 33; M age = 36.2; range: 20.4-64.2). Data were coded for the extent to which (1) items were interpreted correctly; (2) participants endorsed items as describing themselves. We calculated descriptive statistics to evaluate item interpretation and response scale use.

RESULTS

On average, 59% of participants interpreted items correctly, 20% misinterpreted items, 14% had mixed interpretations. Positive item endorsement was most associated with the response 'Very much like me' (77%); mixed endorsement was most associated with 'Somewhat like me' (39%); and negative endorsement of items was most associated with 'Not at all like me' (54%).

CONCLUSIONS

Revisions are necessary for several items to improve accessibility for adults with intellectual disability and should be made in collaboration with this population.

Developing a recovery-oriented intervention for people with severe mental illness and an intellectual disability: design-oriented action research

Introduction

Mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID/BIF) are common in people with severe mental health problems (SMHP). Despite this, there is a lack of treatments adapted for this group of clients.

Methods

This qualitative study describes the development of a new intervention, guided by the principles of action research, for people with SMHP and MID/BIF and mental health professionals to help them talk about all aspects of the process of recovery. The intervention was developed in four cycles and in close cooperation with mental health professionals, experts by experience, other experts in the field of SMHP or MID/BIF, and clients. During all cycles there was a strong focus on the content of the intervention, exercises, understandable language, and drawings for visual support.

Results

This resulted in the intervention "Routes to Recovery," which covers both complaints and strengths, coping strategies, helpful (social) activities, and how to determine future steps in a recovery plan.

Discussion

Routes to Recovery is a first step in helping professionals and their clients with SMHP and MID/BIF to have a conversation about personal strengths and what the client needs to recover. Future research should investigate the effects of this intervention.

Creating a college adjustment index score for student veterans with and without disabilities

Higher education is a critical public health tool to achieve economic success, upward mobility, and improved quality of life. Yet, certain groups of students, including student veterans with and without disabilities (SVDs), are at high risk for course failure and dropout, partially due to challenges related to college adjustment. The purpose of this study is to develop a new college adjustment index score for SVDs. We had a total of 4 different research studies to examine the psychometric properties of our college adjustment index score. After conducting a series of psychometric analyses, we selected a total of 18-items. This 18-item tool may help clinicians and researchers conceptualize college adjustment among students through the lens of integrative Tinto's model and positive psychology approaches. Our psychometric analyses revealed that this index tool is brief, reliable, and valid tool to capture college adjustment in SVDs.
