Abstract
CONTEXT Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) exerts a powerful influence on health. The distribution of cardiovascular risk factors, including CRF, varies across geographic places and is likely influenced by multiple factors at the community, neighborhood, and school levels. In South Carolina, Councils of Government (COGs) serve as regional planning organizations that guide the development and implementation of federal, state, and local initiatives-many of which can influence health-related sectors such as education, parks and recreation, and public health. OBJECTIVES To describe geographic patterns in students' CRF among COG regions in South Carolina and to identify community and school factors that account for the observed variations. DESIGN Cross-sectional observational study. SETTING Using data from the South Carolina FitnessGram project (school year 2018-2019), the analytic sample included public school students from 710 public schools, 64 school districts, and 10 COGs (defined as a regional planning entity that provides a "uniform geographical framework within which the planning, programming, and delivery of services might be undertaken with maximum efficiency and effectiveness"). PARTICIPANTS 74 456 students in grades 5, 8, and 9-12 (high school). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Percentage of students in each COG that achieved the CRF healthy fitness zone (HFZ), as assessed by FitnessGram. RESULTS The sample had a mean age of 12.9 (1.9) years, was 51.7% male, and 51.8% identified as non-Hispanic White. Approximately half (51.3%) achieved the CRF HFZ. Significant differences in the proportion of students achieving the CRF HFZ were observed across COGs before and after adjusting for student, community, and school variables using multivariate analysis (P < .001). Supportive school and community environments were positively and independently associated with the percentage of students achieving the CRF HFZ. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate that population-level youth fitness may be influenced by school and community factors that are amendable through policy actions taken by local government and planning organizations.

Abstract
Purpose: Youth sport (YS) is a community system for promoting children's physical activity (PA). Studies have examined mean PA during YS practices, but few have examined inequalities in the distribution of PA among children during practice time. This study examined PA inequality in time-segmented YS practices and differences in inequality by time segment characteristics. Methods: Children's PA and YS practices were examined using accelerometer and video observation data from a sample of YS teams (n = 36 teams, n = 101 practices) for third- through sixth-grade children (n = 392), approximately eight to 12 years old, in two rural U.S. communities. Practices were time-segmented into smaller units (episodes; n = 991). Episodes were assigned codes for purpose (e.g. warm-up), member arrangement (e.g. whole group), and setting demand (i.e. fosters participation, creates exclusion). Group accelerometer data were paired with episodes, and the Gini coefficient quantified inequality in activity counts and minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Beta generalized estimating equations examined the influence of episode structure on PA inequality. Results: Warm-up (Gini = 0.22), fitness (Gini = 0.24), and sport skill (Gini = 0.24) episodes had significantly lower inequality (p < .05) in activity counts than other purpose types. Management (Gini = 0.32) and strategy (Gini = 0.40) episodes had significantly greater inequality (p < .05) in MVPA minutes than other purpose types. Episodes fostering participation (Gini = 0.32) had significantly lower activity count inequality (p < .05) than episodes creating exclusion (Gini = 0.35). Conclusion: PA inequality among children during YS varied by practice structure. Metrics such as the Gini coefficient can illuminate inequalities in PA and may be useful for guiding efforts to improve population PA in children. Abstract
Purpose: To identify practice and social contextual factors that associate with physical activity (PA) levels of children during their participation in a youth soccer program. Methods: Twenty-seven youth soccer teams serving children ages 6-11 years participated. Research staff directly observed and recorded PA intensity and practice and social contextual factors using momentary time-sampling procedures. Each team was observed for 1 practice, during which approximately 6 children were each observed for twenty 30-s observation blocks (10-s observation, 20-s recording). In total, children were observed for 3,102 intervals. Multilevel logistic regression analyses were conducted to describe associations between PA intensity and practice and social contexts. Interaction terms were introduced into the models to determine if the associations differed across girls-only, boys-only, and coed teams. Results: A total of 158 children were observed across the 27 teams. Children were more likely to engage in moderate or vigorous PA while performing fitness (Odds Ratio [OR], 9.9, 95% CI = 5.34-18.04), game (OR, 4.0, 95% CI = 2.88-5.66), warm-up (OR, 2.8, 95% CI = 1.85-4.11), and drill (OR, 1.9, 95% CI = 1.41-2.67) activities compared to tactic/instructional activities. The associations between PA intensity levels and practice and social contexts did not differ across girls-only, boys-only, and coed teams. Conclusions: Fitness activities and full-team game play were associated with higher PA intensity levels during children's participation in youth soccer practices. Youth sport practice protocols can be modified to increase children's physical activity.

Abstract
Introduction Lack of physical activity (PA) among children living in rural communities is a documented public health problem. Although studies have examined community conditions defined by a rural-urban dichotomy, few have investigated rural community conditions with a concentration of Hispanic/Latino people. This cross-sectional study examined sociodemographic characteristics associated with youth sport (YS) participation and daily PA among children living within concentrated Hispanic/Latino rural U.S. Midwest communities. Methods During spring 2022, 97% of 3rd-6th grade children (n = 281, aged approximately 8-12 years) attending school in rural Midwestern communities (n = 2) with >50% concentration of Hispanic students participated in the Wellscapes Project, a community randomized trial. Participants completed the Youth Activity Profile and supplemental National Survey of Children's Health questions assessing PA behaviors and YS participation. Caregivers of a subsample of children (n = 215; males, n = 93; females, n = 122) consented to pair their child's survey results with school enrollment records (e.g., free/reduced lunch status and race and ethnicity). Mixed models with community as a random effect examined main and interaction effects of grade, sex, ethnoracial status, and family income on YS participation and these sociodemographic characteristics and YS participation on daily moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Results Approximately half of children participated in YS. Non-Hispanic White children (n = 82) were over five times more likely to participate in YS than Hispanic peers (n = 133) (OR = 5.54, 95% CI = 2.64-11.61, p < 0.001). YS participants accumulated 8.3 ± 2.3 more minutes of daily MVPA than non-participants (p < 0.001). Sixth graders, females, and Hispanic children reported lower daily MVPA than comparison groups (p < 0.05). Significant interaction effects on daily MVPA between grade and ethnoracial status (F(3, 204) = 3.04, p = 0.030) were also found. Discussion Disparities in sport participation and PA outcomes based on sociodemographic characteristics exist among children living in ethnoracially diverse rural communities. Strategies to promote YS participation, including community structural changes, may help reduce PA disparities. The research provides valuable insights for policymakers, public health professionals, and community members to address YS participation barriers, not limited to cost, while considering other PA-promotion efforts to improve child population health.

Abstract
The purpose was to describe wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) throughout a high school fall athletic season (August to November) after a state-wide mandate requiring schools to use a WBGT-guided activity modification table with categories (AMTC). A cross-sectional research design utilized 30 South Carolina high schools. The independent variables were region (upstate, midlands, and coastal), sport (football, tennis, cross-country), month, start times (7-10 am, 10 am-3 pm, 3-6 pm, and 6-9 pm), and event type (practice, competition). Dependent variables were event frequency, average WBGT, and AMTC. Practice WBGT was 78.7 ± 8.2 °F (range: 34.7 to 99.0 °F). A significant difference for WBGT across month (F6, 904.7 = 385.07, P < 0.001) existed, with early September hotter than all other months (84.8 °F ± 3.8, P < 0.001). Every month had practices in each AMTC, until early November. Most events (64.6%, n = 1986) did not change AMTC; however, 9.1% (n = 281) changed to a hotter category. The 10 am-3 pm start time was significantly hotter than all other time frames (83.0 °F ± 7.2, P < 0.05). Tennis experienced hotter practices (79.9 °F ± 6.9) than football (78.4 °F ± 8.5; P < 0.001) and cross country (78.2 °F ± 8.8, P < 0.001). Schools in the Midlands experienced hotter practices (80.1 °F ± 7.8) than upstate (P < 0.001) and coastal schools (P = 0.005). Competition WBGT was significantly cooler than practices (72.3 ± 10.5 °F, t = 12.04, P < 0.001) and differed across sports (F2, 20.78 = 18.39, P < .001). Both cross-country (P = 0.003) and tennis (P < 0.001) were hotter than football. Schools should continuously monitor WBGT throughout practices and until November to optimize AMTC use. Risk mitigation strategies are needed for sports other than football to decrease the risk of exertional heat illnesses.

The prevalence of dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns is unknown among athletic populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns among athletic populations with a clinical measure to assess the biomechanical dimension of breathing patterns. Using a cross-sectional design, 1,933 athletes across multiple sports and ages were screened from 2017 to 2020. Breathing patterns were assessed using the Hi-Lo test in the standing position. Scores of the Hi-Lo test were determined based on the presence or absence of abdominal excursion, anterior-posterior chest expansion, superior rib cage migration, and shoulder elevation. The Hi-Lo test scores were used to categorize observational breathing mechanics as dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns. The prevalence of athletes with dysfunctional breathing patterns was 90.6% (1,751 of 1,933). Athletes with diaphragmatic breathing patterns accounted for 9.4% of all athletes in our sample (182 of 1,933). There were no differences in the proportion of breathing patterns between male and female athletes ( p = 0.424). Breathing patterns observations were associated with sport-setting categories ( p = 0.002). The highest percentages of dysfunctional breathers were in middle school student athletes (93.7%), followed by elementary school student athletes (91.2%), high school student athletes (90.6%), professional/semiprofessional athletes (87.5%), and collegiate athletes (84.8%). The current study observed that dysfunctional breathing patterns (90.6%) in the biomechanical dimension were more prevalent than diaphragmatic breathing pattern (9.4%) among competitive athletes. These results suggest that clinicians may need to consider screening breathing patterns and implementing intervention programs aimed to improve the efficiency of biomechanical dimensions of breathing patterns in athletic populations. This study may help raise awareness of impacts of dysfunctional breathing patterns on athletes' health and performance.

Abstract
There is strong evidence to support the association between daily physical activity and sleep parameters in children and adolescents. Physical activity and outdoor play are favourably associated with most sleep outcomes in school children. The aim is to find out the levels of physical activity and the quality of sleep in Basque schoolchildren aged between six and seventeen and to analyse the possible differences between those who carry out some kind of physical sports activity and those who do not. The sample consisted of 1082 schoolchildren (50.1% male and 49.9% female). Differences between groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test (2 samples) and Kruskal-Wallis one-factor ANOVA (k samples). A total of 723 (66.94%) of the participants said they practiced some physical sports activity. The accelerometers obtained significant differences in all levels of physical activity, as well as in sleep efficiency, with higher levels of physical activity (sedentary p = 0.001; light p = 0.017; moderate p = 0.009; vigorous p = 0.001 and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity p = 0.002) and better sleep efficiency (p = 0.002) in those schoolchildren who perform some type of physical sports activity. A significant difference in time spent in sedentary activities was also observed between primary and secondary school pupils of both sexes and regardless of the degree of physical sports activity completion.
