Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Food Systems and Determinants of Resilience in Indigenous Communities of Jharkhand State, India: A Serial Cross-Sectional Study

Diet change and sustainability in Indigenous areas: characteristics, drivers, and impacts of diet change in Gunayala, Panama

Many Indigenous communities around the world have been experiencing rapid and profound diet changes. This case report uses a Sustainability Science lens to understand the characteristics of diet change in Indigenous Gunas communities of Panama, as well as its drivers and sustainability impacts. We use primary information collected through interviews with 30 experts and 232 household surveys in three Gunas islands  characterised by different levels of development, western influence, and cultural erosion. We observe a rapid westernization of diets that has been mainly driven by closer interaction with tourists and the Panamanian society, as well as broader development processes. However, this diet change has a series of intersecting sustainability impacts related to food security, health, and socio-cultural and environmental change. It is necessary to understand the intersection of these phenomena when designing programs and interventions that seek to prevent or mitigate negative diet changes in Gunayala, and other  Indigenous contexts more broadly.

Lessons learned to improve COVID-19 response in communities with greatest socio-economic vulnerabilities

BACKGROUND

Vulnerable communities are susceptible to and disproportionately affected by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the challenges faced, perceptions, lessons learned, and recommendations of the organizations that provide services in response to COVID-19 to vulnerable communities is critical to improving emergency response and preparedness in these communities.

METHODS

This study employed GIS mapping to identify the needs and assets that exist in communities in Baltimore City, where vulnerabilities related to social determinants of health and the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic were greatest. We also conducted an online survey between September 1, 2021, and May 30, 2022, to assess the COVID-19-related services provided by local organizations, challenges faced, perceptions, lessons learned, and recommendations to inform policies, programs, and funding related to improving the COVID-19 response in underserved communities. The survey was disseminated through the online Kobo Toolbox platform to leaders and representatives of organizations in Baltimore City.

RESULTS

Based on GIS mapping analysis, we identified three communities as the most vulnerable and 522 organizations involved in the COVID-19 response across Baltimore City. 247 surveys were disseminated, and 50 survey responses were received (20.24% response rate). Out of these organizations, nearly 80% provided services in response to COVID-19 to the identified vulnerable communities. Challenges experienced ranged from funding (29%), and outreach/recruitment (26%), to not having access to updated and accurate information from local officials (32%).

CONCLUSIONS

This research highlights critical insights gained related to the experiences of vulnerable populations and suggests ways forward to address challenges faced during the emergency response by providing recommendations for policy and program changes. Furthermore, the findings will help better prepare vulnerable communities for public health emergencies and build more community resilience.

Sustainable production and distribution practices in Atlantic Canadian short food supply chains: Explorative study

Introduction

How food is produced, processed, distributed, and consumed significantly impacts the sustainability of food supply chains. Short food supply chains (SFSCs) have been promoted as an alternative approach to offer sustainable solutions. However, empirical studies provide mixed evidence, and the findings greatly vary based on context. This study explores the social, economic, and environmental sustainability practices in Atlantic Canada's SFSCs from the perspective of farm businesses (producers).

Methods

A semi-structured survey was conducted among 64 farmers/producers who participated in Atlantic Canadian SFSCs. Participants were asked what channel they used to sell their products and how far this location is in comparison to the production location if sold to an intermediary, how they believe they could better to improve the sustainability of their production methods, what barriers stood in their way of implementation, and how supply chain supporters could help achieve their sustainability goals.

Results

The findings show that most farm businesses linked to SFCSs have applied ecologically sound production methods such as organic farming, IPM, or other sustainable practices, including regenerative agriculture and no-till farming. Over two-thirds of farm businesses applied sustainable practices such as pasture rotations, green fertilizers, low-carbon couriers, locally sourced inputs, and compostable or recyclable packaging materials. Farm businesses in the Atlantic Provinces highly value the social sustainability of SFSCs, followed by economic and environmental sustainability. Most farm businesses linked to SFSCs were robust to supply- and demand-side shocks, registered a low number of layoffs and fast recovery of operations, and increased their profits during COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19 levels. Yet, several barriers remain, the most important ones being high capital costs and longer payback periods. Other barriers include inconsistent inter-provincial trading restrictions, lack of qualified workers and shrinking agricultural land base.

Discussion

SFSCs in Atlantic Canadian SFSCs have implemented several sustainable practices in their production and distribution systems. Most of the farm businesses linked to SFSCs are small, are focused on specific product groups, target small towns or rural areas, and rely on direct-on farm sales to individual customers, and thus can play a crucial role by complementing longer food supply chains. By taking SFSCs in Atlantic Provinces as a case, this study expands our understanding of recent efforts and challenges local producers face to adopt sustainable practices in their production and distribution systems.

Utilization of Nutritional Supplementation Services and Their Predictors in Pregnant and Lactating Women Living in an Urban Resettlement Colony of Delhi, India: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction Maternal undernutrition during pregnancy and lactating has adverse health consequences for the mother and her child. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme by the Government of India provides supplementary nutrition services to all pregnant and lactating women but its utilization is suboptimal due to inefficient distribution through the health system and beneficiary concerns regarding its usefulness. This study was conducted with the objective of assessing the utilization of nutrition-related ICDS services by pregnant and lactating women in urban poor settlements of Delhi and the sociodemographic factors associated with non-utilization. Materials and methods This was a community-based cross-sectional survey in an urban resettlement colony and slum area located in the northeast district of Delhi. The data collection was conducted from January to May 2022. Eligible participants included pregnant women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy and lactating mothers in their first six months of the postpartum period who were residents of the study setting. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested and self-designed questionnaire. The primary outcome was the proportion of women utilizing ICDS take-home rations (THR) in the previous month. Results A total of 365 participants were recruited in this study including 208 pregnant and 157 lactating women having a median (IQR) age of 25 (22-28) years. A total of 211 (57.8%) participants reported a history of utilization of ICDS supplementary nutrition services during their current pregnancy or postpartum with 154 (42.2%) having received THR in the previous month. Among the currently pregnant women, 84 (40.4%) had utilized ICDS THR while in the currently lactating women, 70 (44.6%) had utilized THR in the previous month. On adjusted analysis, multigravid women were less likely to have utilized ICDS compared to primigravida women. Reasons for non-utilization of the ICDS supplementary nutrition services by the mothers were temporary disruption due to cessation of ICDS services by protesting Anganwadi workers (over demand for increased honorarium), difficult access to Anganwadi center, the poor perceived taste of the food provided as THR, and perception by the mothers that they did not require THR. Most women reported sharing the THR with their family members. All pregnant and lactating women were found to be calorie and protein deficient in this study when applying the recommended intake values. No association was observed between the utilization of ICDS in the previous month and the presence of calorie deficiency in both pregnant (p=0.35) and lactating (p=0.24) women. Conclusions More than four in ten eligible pregnant and lactating women in an urban resettlement colony in Delhi did not utilize ICDS supplementary nutrition services with similar rates of utilization in both pregnant and lactating women. Women living in joint families and consequently larger households were less likely to utilize ICDS services. A majority of pregnant and lactating women were calorie and protein deficient even on applying non-pregnant cut-off requirements. The ICDS scheme needs to strengthen information, education, and communication (IEC) strategies and interventions to improve its acceptability and utilization by this vulnerable population.

The Influence of Food Environments on Food Security Resilience during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Examination of Urban and Rural Difference in Kenya

Hunger and food insecurity has worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The types of food environments (e.g., natural/built) that people can access may improve household resilience to food-system shocks. This paper examines (1) urban and rural differences in the perceived influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural, livelihoods, food environment attributes, diets; and (2) whether access to different food environments was associated with food security. A two-part telephonic survey (COVID-19 Surveillance Community Action Network Food Systems Tool and Household Food Insecurity Access Scale) was conducted in Western Kenya (n = 173) and an informal settlement in Nairobi (n = 144) in January/February 2021. Limitations on the acquisition of farm inputs and movement restrictions had an adverse impact on agriculture and food sales. Urban residents reported a more significant impact on livelihoods (97% vs. 87%, p < 0.001), with day laborers being the most impacted. Rural respondents reported access to significantly more food environments and lower food insecurity. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that younger respondents, ≤1 income source, had more difficulty acquiring food, decreased access to cultivated environments, and increased access to informal markets were predictors for higher food insecurity. These data indicate that access to specific types of food environments may improve household resilience.
