Abstract
This case series describes the post-mortem findings in 17 bitches (Canis lupus familiaris) with a recent (<7 days) history of caesarean section, most (94%) of which had undergone conservative caesarean section with preservation of the uterus. Brachycephalic breeds accounted for 71% of all cases, with the French Bulldog (35%, n = 6), English Bulldog (18%, n = 3) and Boston Terrier (12%, n = 2) overrepresented. Eleven animals (65%) died between 4 and 48 h after surgery, whereas six (35%) died during the procedure. The most common cause of death was septicaemia (41%, n = 7) associated with Streptococcus canis (29%, n = 5) and/or Escherichia coli (24%, n = 4). Other causes of death included brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)-associated respiratory failure (24%, n = 4), haemorrhagic shock (18%, n = 3), inconclusive (12%, n = 2) and gastric dilatation and volvulus (6%, n = 1). Histopathological changes were seen in the uterus of 10 cases and included marked inflammation (60%, n = 6), marked haemorrhage (20%, n = 2) or both (20%, n = 2). Metritis was often characterized by fibrinonecrotic, neutrophilic to mixed inflammation, consistent with acute infection. However, prominent lymphohistiocytic infiltrates in two cases suggested that infection had been present prior to surgery. Peritonitis, myositis and panniculitis commonly (35%, n = 6) surrounded the incision sites. The presence of inflammation and bacterial colonies within multiple surgical sites suggested iatrogenic implantation of bacteria, potentially from the uterine lumen. Bacterial culture and isolation, as well as tape measurements for evaluation of conformational BOAS risk factors where applicable, are recommended as part of the routine post-mortem work-up for bitches that die shortly after caesarean section.

Abstract
Background Emergency cases can be presented at any time of the day or night. All small animal practitioners need to have the skills to triage and stabilize common emergency cases, even if cases are ultimately referred to another facility. Objective and procedure The second part of this 3-part review article series discusses animals that collapse at home as well as dogs and cats with bleeding. A stepwise approach to categorize and stabilize these cases is outlined, along with helpful tips to optimize the referral experience, if indicated. Results Having a robust and methodical approach to animals that collapse is important for many emergency cases, as the causes and treatment methods vary. Bleeding can lead to acute death if left untreated and knowing the steps to stop bleeding is important for patient stabilization. Conclusion and clinical relevance Do not refer emergent cases before completing basic stabilization. Many emergency cases do not require emergent referral and can be worked up by the primary veterinarian or sent to a referral clinic on an appointment basis after appropriate stabilization steps have occurred.

Abstract
A 2-year-old spayed female Siberian Husky was presented with a history of acute onset lethargy, collapse, haematochezia and vomiting. The patient was severely tachycardic and hypotensive. Point-of-care ultrasound revealed gallbladder wall thickening and peritoneal effusion consistent with haemorrhage on subsequent abdominocentesis. Despite attempted medical stabilization over the course of several hours, including blood products and multiple autotransfusions, the patient progressed to cardiopulmonary arrest. The dog was successfully resuscitated but was subsequently euthanized. Necropsy revealed a severe, acute hemoperitoneum secondary to rupture of the left lateral liver lobe. A tear in the hepatic capsule was identified along with a large hematoma. A single adult nematode, consistent with Dirofilaria immitis, was found in a pulmonary vessel in the right caudal lung lobe. The remaining necropsy findings were supportive of the clinical diagnosis of anaphylaxis. This report details a case, with necropsy findings, supporting a diagnosis of anaphylaxis and severe, refractory hemoperitoneum resulting from hepatic rupture. Acute hepatic rupture should be considered in cases of anaphylaxis-related hemoperitoneum.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of admission total plasma protein (TPP) and the administration of red blood cell transfusions in dogs with diagnosed hemoabdomen. To secondarily evaluate additional point-of-care parameters associated with red blood cell transfusion administration. DESIGN Retrospective study between 2009 and 2019. SETTING University veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS Ninety dogs admitted to a university veterinary teaching hospital after a diagnosis of traumatic or nontraumatic hemoabdomen (NTH). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Medical records were retrospectively reviewed; signalment, point-of-care diagnostics, and transfusion administration information was recorded. A total of 47 dogs (traumatic hemoabdomen 11/26; NTH 36/64) received packed red blood cell transfusions. For each 1 g/dL unit decrease in TPP, dogs had an increased odds ratio (OR) of 2.14 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.44-3.40, P < 0.001) of receiving a red blood cell transfusion. Dogs diagnosed with NTH were more likely to receive a red blood cell transfusion than dogs with a traumatic hemoabdomen (OR: 2.78, 95% CI: 1.11-7.141, P = 0.03). Lower PCV values (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.04-1.12, P < 0.001), bicarbonate values (OR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.09-1.56, P = 0.003), and base excess (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.1-1.49, P = 0.003) were associated with a higher likelihood of red blood cell transfusion. Additionally, higher lactate (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.16-1.63, P < 0.001) and Acute Patient Physiologic and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLE)fast scores (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04-1.17, P < 0.001) were associated with increased red blood cell transfusion administration. CONCLUSIONS Low admission TPP, independent of low PCV, was associated with red blood cell transfusions regardless of underlying cause. For each 1 g/dL unit decrease in TPP on presentation, dogs were approximately 2 times more likely to receive a red blood cell transfusion during hospitalization. Other factors that were associated with increased transfusion administration included presenting PCV, PCV/TPP ratio, bicarbonate, base excess, lactate, and APPLEfast scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the characteristics of canine freeze-dried plasma (cFDP) as it is serially diluted with sterile water. DESIGN In vitro experimental study. SETTING Government blood and coagulation research laboratory. ANIMALS cFDP from a commercial manufacturer. INTERVENTIONS Ten units of cFDP were reconstituted to 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, and 40% of the recommended volume with sterile water. The resultant solutions were analyzed for coagulation factor activity (factors II, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII as well as antithrombin), fibrinogen concentration, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, viscosity, osmolality, and kaolin-activated thromboelastography. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Viscosity, osmolality, and turbidity properties of plasma were increased in a reconstitution volume-dependent manner, with the 40% suggested volume generating approximately 2-fold increases in each. Similarly, factor activity levels and fibrinogen concentration increased by approximately 2-fold over this range in a concentration-dependent manner. Prothrombin time declined from 11.4 seconds at 100% volume to 10.9 seconds at 70% before increasing to 11.9 seconds at 40%. Activated partial thromboplastin time increased exponentially from 21.8 seconds at 100% rehydration to 100.0 seconds at 40%. R-time on TEG increased from 3.1 to 13.9 minutes at 50% rehydration, while alpha angle declined from 61.3° to 24.7° over the same range, and the maximum amplitude initially increased from 13.2 mm at 100% water to 18.6 mm at 70% water before dropping back down to 14.6 mm at 50% water. No clotting was observed with 40% rehydration. CONCLUSIONS The creation of hyperosmotic plasma from cFDP appears feasible with preservation of concentrated coagulation factors, although there are some unexplained effects that happen to coagulation functions at the highest concentrations tested using only 40%-50% of recommended rehydration volume. Further studies are needed to evaluate the hyperosmotic product in vivo.

Abstract
Objective This study investigated the performance among four cardiac output (CO) monitoring techniques in comparison with the reference method intermittent pulmonary artery thermodilution (iPATD) and their ability to diagnose fluid responsiveness (FR) during a modified passive leg raise (PLRM) maneuver in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs undergoing acute blood volume manipulations. The study also examined the simultaneous effect of performing the PLRM on dynamic variables such as stroke distance variation (SDV), peak velocity variation (PVV), and stroke volume variation (SVV). Study design Prospective, nonrandomized, crossover design. Study animals Six healthy male Beagle dogs. Methods The dogs were anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane and mechanically ventilated under neuromuscular blockade. After instrumentation, they underwent a series of sequential, nonrandomized steps: Step 1: baseline data collection; Step 2: removal of 33 mL kg-1 of circulating blood volume; Step 3: blood re-transfusion; and Step 4: infusion of 20 mL kg-1 colloid solution. Following a 10-min stabilization period after each step, CO measurements were recorded using esophageal Doppler (EDCO), transesophageal echocardiography (TEECO), arterial pressure waveform analysis (APWACO), and electrical cardiometry (ECCO). Additionally, SDV, PVV, and SVV were recorded. Intermittent pulmonary artery thermodilution (iPATDCO) measurements were also recorded before, during, and after the PLRM maneuver. A successful FR diagnosis made using a specific test indicated that CO increased by more than 15% during the PLRM maneuver. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance for repeated measures with post hoc Tukey test, linear regression, Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (ρc), and Bland-Altman analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results All techniques detected a reduction in CO (p < 0.001) during hemorrhage and an increase in CO after blood re-transfusion and colloid infusion (p < 0.001) compared with baseline. During hemorrhage, CO increases with the PLRM maneuver were as follows: 33% for iPATD (p < 0.001), 19% for EC (p = 0.03), 7% for APWA (p = 0.97), 39% for TEE (p < 0.001), and 17% for ED (p = 0.02). Concurrently, decreases in SVV, SDV, and PVV values (p < 0.001) were also observed. The percentage error for TEE, ED, and EC was less than 30% but exceeded 55% for APWA. While TEECO and ECCO slightly underestimated iPATDCO values, EDCO and APWACO significantly overestimated iPATDCO values. TEE and EC exhibited good and acceptable agreement with iPATD. However, CO measurements using all four techniques and iPATD did not differ before, during, and after PLRM at baseline, blood re-transfusion, and colloid infusion. Conclusion and clinical relevance iPATD, EC, TEE, and ED effectively assessed FR in hypovolemic dogs during the PLRM maneuver, while the performance of APWA was unacceptable and not recommended. SVV, SDV, and PVV could be used to monitor CO changes during PLRM and acute blood volume manipulations, suggesting their potential clinical utility.

Abstract
Many new concepts are emerging in the understanding of fluid therapy in human and mammalian medicine, including the role of the glycocalyx, increased understanding of fluid, sodium, and chloride overload, and the advantages of colloid administration in the form of albumin. None of these concepts, however, appear to be directly applicable to non-mammalian exotic patients, and careful consideration of their alternate physiology is required when formulating fluid plans for these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To demonstrate if modified passive leg raise (PLRM) maneuver can be used for volumetric evaluation of fluid responsiveness (FR) by inducing cardiac output (CO) changes during experimental induction and correction of hypovolemia in healthy anesthetized dogs. The effects of PLRM on plethysmographic variability index (PVI) and pulse pressure variation (PPV) were also investigated. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, crossover study. ANIMALS A total of six healthy anesthetized Beagle dogs. METHODS Dogs were anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane. They were mechanically ventilated under neuromuscular blockade, and normothermia was maintained. After instrumentation, all dogs were subjected to four stages: 1, baseline; 2, removal of 27 mL kg-1 circulating blood volume; 3, after blood re-transfusion; and 4, after 20 mL kg-1 hetastarch infusion over 20 minutes. A 10 minute stabilization period was allowed after induction of each stage and before data collection. At each stage, CO via pulmonary artery thermodilution, PVI, PPV and cardiopulmonary variables were measured before, during and after the PLRM maneuver. Stages were sequential, not randomized. Statistical analysis included repeated measures anova and Tukey's post hoc test, considering p < 0.05 as significant. RESULTS During stage 2, PLRM at a 30° angle significantly increased CO (mean ± standard deviation, 1.0 ± 0.1 to 1.3 ± 0.1 L minute-1; p < 0.001), with a simultaneous significant reduction in PVI (38 ± 4% to 21 ± 4%; p < 0.001) and PPV (27 ± 2% to 18 ± 2%; p < 0.001). The PLRM did not affect CO, PPV and PVI during stages 1, 3 and 4. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In anesthetized dogs, PLRM at a 30° angle successfully detected FR during hypovolemia, and identified fluid nonresponsiveness during normovolemia and hypervolemia. Also, in hypovolemic dogs, significant decreases in PVI and PPV occurred in response to PLRM maneuver.
