Abstract
Background The USA is home to 83-88 million dogs, with 3-7 million living in shelters. Shelter dogs move through the supply chain from their geographical origin to adoptive homes, with possible exposure to pathogens and shift in their gut microbiota. However, research in this area is limited. This study examined the effects of intestinal colonization by ESBL bacteria on gut taxa abundance, diversity, and functions in 52 shelter dogs of various ages, sexes, and fertility statuses. Methodology We isolated fecal DNA, sequenced their 16S, processed the sequences using DADA2, identified taxa profiles in each dog by Phyloseq, and analyzed Chao1, Shannon, and Simpson alpha diversity by ggplot2 and Wilcoxon test. We analyzed beta diversity using Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrix from the vegan package. Differential abundance of taxa, gut microbiome functions, and differential abundance of microbiome functions were analyzed using DESeq2, PICRUSt2, and ALDEx2, respectively, with Wilcoxon rank and Kruskal-Wallis tests for comparisons between dog groups. Results Firmicutes (69.3%), Bacteroidota (13.5%), Actinobacteriota (6.77%), Proteobacteria (5.54%), and Fusobacteriota (4.75%) were the major phyla in the gut of shelter dogs. ESBL bacteria colonized dogs had reduced gut microbiota alpha diversity than non-colonized dogs. The abundance levels of the following phyla (Proteobacteria, Deferribacterota, Bacteroidota, Fusobacteriota, and Spirochaetota), class (Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, Deferribacteres, Brachyspirae, and Fusobacteria), and families (Enterobacteriaceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Prevotellaceae, and Peptostreptococcaceae) were significantly (p < 0.05) varied between the two dog groups. Further stratified analysis by age, sex, and spaying/neutering status influenced the abundance of taxa in ESBL bacteria colonized dogs, indicating these covariates act as effect modifiers. Most gut metabolic and biosynthetic pathways were downregulated in ESBL bacteria colonized dogs compared to non-colonized dogs. However, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism and shigellosis, fluorobenzoate degradation, allantoin degradation, toluene degradation, glycol degradation, fatty acid and beta-oxidation, and glyoxylate metabolism bypass pathways were increased in dogs colonized by ESBL bacteria. Conclusion Colonization by ESBL bacteria marks altered gut microbiota. Dog's demography and fertility status modify the alterations, indicating host factors and ESBL bacteria interplay to shape gut microbiota. ESBL bacteria or other factors reprogram gut microbiome functions through down and upregulating multiple metabolic and biosynthesis pathways to promote ESBL bacteria colonization.

Reese LA. Is It Really a Failure? A Survey About Foster Animal Adoption. Animals (Basel) 2024; 14:3498. Abstract
The widespread use of the term "foster fail" in animal rescue suggests that it happens often, but no research has explored the prevalence of volunteers adopting their foster animals or whether the phenomenon is really a "failure". This survey-based study focused on the following questions: 1. How common are foster fails among volunteers on shelter and rescue lists and why do they occur? 2. What types of volunteers are most likely to adopt their foster animals? 3. Do different attachment styles to pets affect foster adoption? 4. Is the adoption of foster animals a way to deal with the potential grief of letting them go to adoption? 5. What are the impacts of foster fails on animal shelters in terms of longevity of volunteers and satisfaction with the volunteer experience? Data were collected through surveys of foster volunteers. Two nonprofit organizations, the Pedigree Foundation and Shelter Animals Count, distributed information about the survey and shelter directors distributed the survey link to their population of foster volunteers. Nine hundred and forty-seven individuals responded. To address the research questions, frequency, correlation, and regression analyses were employed. A total of 38% of volunteers had not adopted a foster in the past ten years, and another 38% had adopted one or two; 90 (11%) and 103 (13%) had adopted three to four or more than four, respectively. Volunteers that had significantly higher numbers of foster fails were those that were older (r = 0.22, p < 0.001), retired (chi-squared = 9.05, p = 0.029), lower on educational attainment (r = -0.13, p < 0.001), female with their own cats (r = 0.16, p < 0.001), and part of a fostering family (r = 0.08, p = 0.043). Volunteers that expressed higher levels of both people-substituting (r = 0.16, p = 0.003) and general (r = 0.13, p = 0.017) attachment to their fosters were more likely to adopt them, as were those that more frequently fostered animals with special medical or behavioral needs (r = 0.25, p < 0.001). Volunteers that had longer tenures (r = 0.43, p < 0.001), fostered more frequently (r = 0.24, p < 0.001), and reported greater resilience (r = 0.10, p = 0.009) had adopted significantly more animals. Finally, there was a significant and positive relationship between satisfaction with fostering and adopting more foster animals (r = 0.16, p < 0.001). The findings indicated that instead of being a "failure," foster adoptions can be a positive force for the animal in question, their adopters, and shelters and rescues because they have more resilient, satisfied, and active volunteers.

Abstract
The relinquishment of companion animals to shelters presents significant challenges for animal welfare organizations and has substantial implications for the well-being of both the animals and their owners. This study aims to investigate the reasons for voluntarily relinquishing animals to shelters, to examine species-specific differences (cats and dogs), to compare initial relinquishments to returns (re-relinquishments or readmissions), and to identify potential changes over a 6-year period framing the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective analysis of owner relinquishment records from an open admission shelter in the US was conducted using content analysis, a novel approach in this area of research. A total of 13 relinquishment reason categories were identified, as well as 9 separate categories for specific behavioral issues. Among 2836 randomly selected records, the most frequent reasons cited were Behavior Issues (28%), Housing/Moving (18%), Unable to Care (16%), Too Many Pets (10%), Financial (6%), and Owner Allergies (5%). The most common behavioral reasons reported were Aggression (32% of behavioral surrenders), Social Conflict (28%), and Soiling (13%). However, differences were observed in the pattern of relinquishment reasons based on statistical analyses of species, type of relinquishment, and year. Regarding temporal trends, Housing/Moving and Financial reasons were not found to have changed significantly since the pandemic, but the relative frequency of the category Unable to Care increased significantly in 2022 and 2023. Collectively, these findings partially replicate those from research spanning the past several decades in this area that has employed less systematic methodology and can further be used to help identify and understand the primary drivers of owner relinquishments.

Abstract
Foster care programs at animal shelters have emerged as an important tool for promoting animal welfare and supporting shelter life-saving efforts. Preliminary evidence suggests that foster caregiving may also be health-promoting for humans. The goals of this study were to investigate the experiences of foster caregivers at animal shelters based on measures of positive and negative affect, quality of life, and grief, and to describe human-animal attachment among foster populations. Between March 2022 and 2023, 131 foster caregivers from five shelters in the United States completed three online surveys before, during and after providing foster care to a shelter animal. Positive affect decreased significantly from baseline to post-foster (F = 5.71, p<0.01), particularly among dog caregivers (F = 6.17, p<0.01). Negative affect remained unchanged (F = 0.47, p = 0.63). Foster caregivers perceived their foster animal provided companionship, affection and emotional support, although dog foster caregivers reported significantly higher emotional (U = 313.50, p<0.01) and social/physical quality of life (t = 4.42, p<0.01) than cat foster caregivers. Caregivers reported low mean avoidant and anxious attachment, suggesting they were able to develop secure bonds with their foster animals. Retention of fosters was also strong, with 86% of caregivers reporting they were likely to provide foster care in the future. Our findings suggest that fostering at animal shelters may serve as a One Health intervention to offer companionship, affection and emotional support to human caregivers while promoting animal welfare. However, these benefits did not translate to improvements in caregiver mental wellbeing, so caution should be applied when considering foster caregiving as a potential mental health promotion tool.

Abstract
Human interaction is one of the most consistently effective interventions that can improve the welfare of shelter-living dogs. Time out of the kennel with a person has been shown to reduce physiological measures of stress as can leaving the shelter for a night or more in a foster home. In this study, we assessed the effects of brief outings and temporary fostering stays on dogs' length of stay and outcomes. In total, we analyzed data of 1955 dogs from 51 animal shelters that received these interventions as well as 25,946 dogs residing at these shelters that served as our controls. We found that brief outings and temporary fostering stays increased dogs' likelihood of adoption by 5.0 and 14.3 times, respectively. While their lengths of stay were longer in comparison to control dogs, this difference was present prior to the intervention. Additionally, we found that these programs were more successful when greater percentages of community members (as compared to volunteers and staff) were involved in caregiving as well as when programs were implemented by better-resourced shelters. As such, animal welfare organizations should consider implementing these fostering programs as evidence-based best practices that can positively impact the outcomes of shelter dogs.

Abstract
As animals experience distress in animal shelters, leaders call for increased efforts to divert intake of companion animals away from shelters. One novel intake diversion strategy is supported self-rehoming, where owners find new homes for their animals without surrendering to a physical shelter. This study aimed to identify predictors of successful diversion of animals through the AdoptaPet.com 'Rehome' online platform. Data for dogs (n = 100,342) and cats (n = 48,484) were analysed through logistic regression to assess the association of animal- and owner-related factors and outcome. Overall, 87.1% of dogs and 85.7% of cats were successfully diverted from animal shelters, out of which, 37.8% of dogs and 35.3% of cats were kept by their original owner. Multiple animal-related factors predicted increased odds of diversion (e.g. younger, smaller). Dog and cat owners who set a longer rehoming deadline (i.e. > 8 weeks) were over twice as likely to keep or adopt out their animal. Dog owners who surrendered for owner-related reasons had increased odds of diversion in comparison to animal behaviour issues. We conclude that online-supported, self-rehoming platforms provide pet owners with an alternative to relinquishment that may reduce the intake of animals to shelters; however, owners with animals that are not preferred by adopters may have to decide whether to keep their animal or relinquish their animal to a shelter or rescue. These results provide guidance for animal shelter professionals on the likelihood of successful diversion programmes given certain animal and owner characteristics.

Abstract
While the roles and efficacy of assistance animals have received attention in the literature, there has been less research focused on animal welfare issues regarding assistance animals. This is a pertinent area, given the burgeoning of types of assistance animals, situations in which they are employed, and access issues arising from increased assistance animal engagement. Animal welfare as pertains to assistance animals is discussed in this paper with respect to overall research on animal welfare concerns in a variety of contexts, training and access issues, and legal and regulatory concerns. Relevant examples from global contexts, as well as the specific Australian context, are offered. Conclusions include that while human quality of life is often considered and protected in laws and policies, this is much less true for assistance animals. Additional attention is required to ensure that the quality of life of both persons with disabilities and their assistance animals can be ensured. Support for a person to meet the needs of an assistance animal, as well as considerations for keeping such working dyads together in changed circumstances (e.g., following a move to an assisted living mode of accommodation), are recommended.

Abstract
Not all dog adoptions are successful. This two-year retrospective study used survival (i.e., time-to-event) analyses to investigate readmissions for dogs adopted from RSPCA Queensland shelters between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020. A better understanding of temporal patterns and risk factors associated with readmission may help RSPCA Queensland shelters better target and tailor resources to improve retention by adopters. The failure function (the cumulative percentage of adoptions that were readmitted by day of the adoption period) increased rapidly during the first 14 days of the adoption period. Approximately two-thirds of all returns occurred in this period. This readmission rate may have been influenced by the RSPCA Queensland adoption-fee refund policy. The cumulative percentage of adoptions that were readmitted plateaued at just under 15%. Dog size, age, coat colour, breed, and spending time in foster before adoption were factors associated with the risk of readmission. Failure functions for a low and a high-risk adoption example demonstrated the large degree of difference in hazard of readmission between covariate patterns, with estimated percentages of adoptions being returned by 90 days for those examples being 2% and 17%, respectively. Spending time in foster care before adoption appears to be protective against readmission, presumably because it supports a successful transition to the new home environment. Behaviour support and training provided for dogs during foster care may contribute to improve their outcomes. These findings highlight the profile of the higher-risk dogs potentially providing shelters with an opportunity to examine where and how resources could be allocated to maximize outcomes for the overall cohort. Population attributable 90-day failure estimates were calculated for each of bodyweight and age at adoption, coat colour, spending time in foster care before adoption, and breed. This calculation shows the expected reduction in the cumulative percentage of dogs readmitted by day 90 if the hazards of readmission for higher risk categories were reduced to those of a lower risk category. Expected reductions for individual factors ranged from 1.8% to 3.6% with one additional estimate of 6.8%. Risk of readmission could be reduced through increased development of foster capacity and capability, targeted interventions, improved adopter-dog matching processes, and more effective targeting of support for higher risk dogs, such as older or larger dogs. Population impact analyses provide a macro view that could assist shelters in strategically assessing the return on investment for various strategies aiming to improve adoption outcomes and potentially reduce readmissions.
