Abstract
Currently, there is a particular interest in the study and identification of bioactive metabolites that can be used as phytomarkers in the standardization of fruit products consumed as natural alternatives for the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. In this investigation, the chemometric analyses of data obtained from the metabolic (1H-NMR) and chromatographic (UPLC-MS) profiles, together with the results from antioxidant activity evaluations, allowed the identification of gallic acid and a quinic acid derivative as phytomarkers responsible for the antioxidant activity detected in crude extract of the fruits of Byrsonima bucidifolia. While the antioxidant activity of the fruit extract of B. bucidifolia is comparable to that of the positive control, its high content of gallic acid could be of interest to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

Abstract
The effect of solvents with different polarities on the recovery of phytochemicals (carotenoids, capsaicinoids, and phenolic compounds) from habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) and their association with antioxidant activity (ABTS•+ and DPPH) was evaluated through Ultra-Performance-Liquid Chromatography coupled with a Photodiode Array Detector and a Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS)-based chemometric analysis, including linear correlation, multiple linear regression, and principal component analysis (PCA). The solvent polarity scale was established according to solvent dielectric constants (ɛ). Color variation (ΔE) was used to determine the presence of carotenoids, with the highest ΔE obtained using low-polarity solvents (hexane and ethyl acetate). A high content of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin was recovered with acetone (4.29 and 3.76 mg g⁻¹ dry weight, respectively). Phenolic compounds such as N-caffeoyl putrescine and derivatives of luteolin and apigenin were identified through mass spectrometry. A high recovery (26.54-31.74 mg GAE g⁻¹ dry weight) of these compounds was obtained using intermediate-polarity solvents. The PCA revealed clustering of solvents based on their affinity for extracting specific compounds and their association with antioxidant activity. A significant correlation was observed between ΔE and DPPH, indicating that carotenoid pigments exhibited higher DPPH radical inhibition capacity than other compounds. Total phenolic content (TPC) and phenolic compounds (phenolpolyamides, hydroxycinnamic acids, and hydroxybenzoic acids) were clustered with the ABTS•+ radical inhibition assay. The information obtained is crucial for selecting suitable solvents in the extraction and purification protocols of bioactive compounds. It is also valuable for conducting plant metabolomic analyses and for studies focused on determining the effects of bioactive compounds in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical applications. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The results describe the characteristics of the extracts obtained using different solvents. Therefore, the information may be useful for establishing extraction protocols for phytochemical compounds in fruits from Capsicum chinense for various purposes, such as metabolomic analysis, the recovery of specific compounds with antioxidant activity, and food applications.

Abstract
This research investigated the effect of mixing formulas and storage conditions on the quality of the acerola tea bags. The tea bag formula, which includes 94 g of acerola fragments, 6 g of oolong tea, and 3 g of sweet leaves, had the best sensory quality. Under this condition, the acerola tea powder had vitamin C of 759.63 mg/100 g, phenolic content of 1747.26 mg GAE/100 g, and antioxidant activity of 3025.70 mg AAE/100 g. Furthermore, the present study found that the acerola tea's sorption isotherm curve was fitted with the GAB model (R2 = 0.97). In addition, this study also examined the effects of several storage temperatures, such as 7 ± 2 °C, room temperature, and 40 °C, on the stability of an acerola tea for up to 28 days. The degradation of vitamin C, polyphenols, and antioxidant activity in tea samples during storage was fitted with the Arrhenius plots, first-order reactions, and Ball equation. Furthermore, at whatever storage temperature, the tea's final water activity was not above the safe zone of below 0.6. Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) presents a formidable global health concern, affecting one in six adults over 25. This review explores the potential of phenolic compounds in managing CKD and its complications. By examining the existing research, we highlight their diverse biological activities and potential to combat CKD-related issues. We analyze the nutritional benefits, bioavailability, and safety profile of these compounds. While the clinical evidence is promising, preclinical studies offer valuable insights into underlying mechanisms, optimal dosages, and potential side effects. Further research is crucial to validate the therapeutic efficacy of phenolic compounds for CKD. We advocate for continued exploration of their innovative applications in food, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals. This review aims to catalyze the scientific community's efforts to leverage phenolic compounds against CKD-related challenges.

Abstract
Polyphenols from stevia leaves (PPSs) are abundant byproducts from steviol glycoside production, which have been often studied as raw extracts from stevia extracts for their bioactivities. Herein, the PPSs rich in isochlorogenic acids were studied for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes. The PPSs presented stronger antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and B. subtilis than their antifungal activity against M. furfur and A. niger. Meanwhile, the PPSs inhibited four cancer cells by more than 60% based on their viability, in a dose-dependent manner. The PPSs presented similar IC50 values on the inhibition of digestive enzyme activities compared to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), but had weaker anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, PPSs could be a potential natural alternative to antimicrobial agents. This is the first report on the bioactivity of polyphenols from stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) leaves excluding flavonoids, and will be of benefit for understanding the role of PPSs and their application.

Abstract
The efficient extraction of polyphenols from pomegranate peels using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was investigated. A Box-Behnken design was used to investigate the effects of four independent variables (water content, liquid-to-solid ratio, ultrasonic power, and extraction time) on total polyphenol content (TPC), punicalagin content (PC), and ellagic acid content (EC). Optimized DES-based UAE conditions were as follows: TPC (water content, 29.30%; liquid-to-solid ratio, 53.50 mL/g; ultrasonic power, 238.20 W; extraction time, 29.50 min), PC (water content, 25.65%; liquid-to-solid ratio, 44.20 mL/g; ultrasonic power, 120 W; extraction time, 20 min), and EC (water content, 33.13%; liquid-to-solid ratio, 60 mL/g; ultrasonic power, 300 W; extraction time, 20 min). Under these optimal conditions, the experimental values for TPC, PC, and EC were 67.50 mg GAE/g, 130.65 mg/g, and 2.04 mg/g, respectively; these values were consistent with the predicted values.

Abstract
In the present study, blackberry extract was prepared using a previously optimized solid-liquid extraction method in 70% aqueous acetone aimed at the recovery of its principal phenolics. Subsequently, 0.5 g of freeze-dried extract was subjected to flash chromatography fractionation, which was conducted on a C18 column using a binary solvent system of water and methanol at 10 mL/min. The total phenolic content (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activities of the obtained 42 flash fractions were determined, and a strong positive correlation (r ≥ 0.986) was exhibited among them. Furthermore, the graph of the antioxidant indices of the flash fractions resembled the flash chromatogram, suggesting a good correlation among the compounds within the chromatographic peaks and the antioxidant indices. LC-MS/MS identified as many 28 phenolics, including cinnamtannin A2 reported for the first time in blackberries. This study further established the role of dominant anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside), but uniquely those of ellagitannins and catechins on the antioxidant capacity of blackberries.

Abstract
For health and safety concerns, traditional high-calorie sweeteners and artificial sweeteners are gradually replaced in food industries by natural and low-calorie sweeteners. As a natural and high-quality sugar substitute, steviol glycosides (SvGls) are continually scrutinized regarding their safety and application. Recently, the cultivation of organic stevia has been increasing in many parts of Europe and Asia, and it is obvious that there is a vast market for sugar substitutes in the future. Rebaudioside A, the main component of SvGls, is gradually accepted by consumers due to its safe, zero calories, clear, and sweet taste with no significant undesirable characteristics. Hence, it can be used in various foods or dietary supplements as a sweetener. In addition, rebaudioside A has been demonstrated to have many physiological functions, such as antihypertension, anti-diabetes, and anticaries. But so far, there are few comprehensive reviews of rebaudioside A. In this review article, we discuss the physicochemical properties, metabolic process, safety, regulatory, health benefits, and biosynthetic pathway of rebaudioside A and summarize the modification methods and state-of-the-art production and purification techniques of rebaudioside A. Furthermore, the current problems hindering the future production and application of rebaudioside A are analyzed, and suggestions are provided.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites involved in plant adaptation processes. The development of extraction procedures, quantification, and identification of this compounds in habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) leaves can provide information about their accumulation and possible biological function. The main objective of this work was to study the effect of the UAE method and the polarity of different extraction solvents on the recovery of phenolic compounds from C. chinense leaves. Quantification of the total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (AA) by ABTS+ and DPPH radical inhibition methods, and the relation between the dielectric constant (ε) as polarity parameter of the solvents and TPC using Weibull and Gaussian distribution models was analyzed. The major phenolic compounds in C. chinense leaves extracts were identified and quantified by UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS. The highest recovery of TPC (24.39 ± 2.41 mg GAE g-1 dry wt) was obtained using MeOH (50%) by UAE method. Correlations between TPC and AA of 0.89 and 0.91 were found for both radical inhibition methods (ABTS+ and DPPH). The Weibull and Gaussian models showed high regression values (0.93 to 0.95) suggesting that the highest phenolic compounds recovery is obtained using solvents with "ε" values between 35 and 52 by UAE. The major compounds were identified as N-caffeoyl putrescine, apigenin, luteolin and diosmetin derivatives. The models presented are proposed as a useful tool to predict the appropriate solvent composition for the extraction of phenolic compounds from C. chinense leaves by UAE based on the "ε" of the solvents for future metabolomic studies.

Abstract
Increased sugar consumption and unhealthy dietary patterns are key drivers of many preventable diseases that result in disability and death worldwide. However, health awareness has increased over the past decades creating a massive on-going demand for new low/non-caloric natural sweeteners that have a high potential and are safer for consumption than artificial ones. The current study aims to investigate the nutritional properties, in vitro toxicological profile, total/individual polyphenols content, and the antioxidant, anti-cariogenic, and antimicrobial activity of two newly obtained vegan and sugar-free chocolate (VHC1 and VHC2). The energy values for the two finished products were very similar, 408.04 kcal/100 g for VHC1 and 404.68 kcal/100 g for VHC2. Both products, VHC1 and VHC2 present strong antioxidant activities, whereas antimicrobial results show an increased activity for VHC1 compared to VHC2, because of a higher phenolic content. In vitro toxicological evaluation revealed that both samples present a safe toxicological profile, while VHC2 increased cellular turnover of dermal cell lines, highlighting its potential use in skin treatments. The current work underlines the potential use of these vegetal mixtures as sugar-free substitutes for conventional products, as nutraceuticals, as well as topic application in skin care due to antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.

Abstract
The aim of this research was the comparative study of the amino acids content in the dry extracts of Iridaceae plants of Ukrainian flora: Juno bucharica leaves and corms, Gladiolus hybrid Zefir leaves, Iris hungarica and Iris variegata rhizomes, and Crocus sativus stigmas, flowers, leaves and corms. A gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method has been used. Separation of amino acids in the samples was carried out using a Shimadzu GC-MS-QP2010 equipped with an Rxi-5ms (Restek Corporation capillary column (30 m long, 0.25 mm outer diameter and 0.25 µm) with a liquid stationary phase (5% diphenyl and 95% polysiloxane) after derivatization with N-(t-butyldimethylsilyl)-N109 methyltrifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA) reagent. The results obtained have shown that extracts from the aerial parts of plants investigated have a higher amino acid content and more diverse composition than the underground organs. Experimental data showed that Crocus leaves and Juno leaves extracts contain the highest general content of amino acids—31.99 mg/g and 14.65 mg/g respectively. All samples showed a high content of L-pyroglutamic acid (0.33–12.35 mg/g). Moreover, Crocus leaves and Juno leaves extracts had the most suitable amino acids composition and are prospective for further pharmacological studies.

Abstract
Capsinoids are very similar antioxidant compounds to capsaicinoids, but less irritating, non-pungent and more palatable, and can thus be used in greater concentrations for food applications. To date, three capsinoids (capsiate, dihydrocapsiate, and nordihydrocapsiate) have been isolated from the pepper fruits. Due to its substantial commercial importance, it would be convenient to determine which pepper varieties have a richer content. Ultrasound- (UAE) and microwave- (MAE) assisted extraction have been implemented and analyzed using multivariate statistical methods. Firstly, different solvents were tested individually. The three best solvents were used in a set mixture design, where 42% methanol and 58% ethyl acetate were determined as the optimum combination for UAE, and 100% methanol for MAE. Subsequently, a Box–Behnken experimental design with four variables for both UAE and MAE (time, temperature, pH and sample mass:solvent volume “ratio”) was performed. The sample mass:solvent volume was the most influential variable in UAE; while for MAE no variable was any more influential than the others. Finally, both optimized extraction methods were successfully applied to different varieties of peppers. Besides, to demonstrate the efficiency of both extraction methods, a recovery study was performed. The results prove the potential of both techniques as highly adequate methods for the extraction of capsinoids from peppers.

Abstract
Bioactive Phenols-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (PL-CNps) were developed by ionic gelation from Persian lemon (Citrus latifolia) waste (PLW) and chitosan nanoparticles. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optimal Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) conditions for the total phenolic compounds (TPC) recovery from PLW (58.13 mg GAE/g dw), evaluating the ethanol concentration, extraction time, amplitude, and solid/liquid ratio. Eight compounds expressed as mg/g dry weight (dw) were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled photo diode array (UPLC-PDA) analysis: eriocitrin (20.71 ± 0.09), diosmin (18.59 ± 0.13), hesperidin (7.30 ± 0.04), sinapic acid (3.67 ± 0.04), catechin (2.92 ± 0.05), coumaric acid (2.86 ± 0.01), neohesperidin (1.63 ± 0.00), and naringenin (0.44 ± 0.00). The PL-CNps presented size of 232.7 nm, polydispersity index of 0.182, Z potential of -3.8 mV, and encapsulation efficiency of 81.16%. The results indicated that a synergic effect between phenolic compounds from PLW and chitosan nanoparticles was observed in antioxidant and antibacterial activity, according to Limpel's equation. Such results indicate that PLW in such bioprocesses shows excellent potential as substrates for the production of value-added compounds with a special application for the food industry.

Abstract
Myrtus communis L. is an evergreen shrub that produces berries with a high content in antioxidant compounds. Since these compounds have demonstrated a positive effect on human health, the interest on berries and their usages has increased. However, environmental conditions may affect the productivity of these species and consequently the quality of wild myrtle. Ecotypes from diverse geographical origins may result in significant variations in terms of bioactive compounds content as well as in chemical traits. For this reason, in this work ecotypes from two different localizations have been studied to determine if their differences in morphological and anthocyanins traits can be attributed to their origin and the environmental characteristics of these locations. For this, chemometric analyses such as Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis, were employed. The results showed differences between the ecotypes depending on their location. In particular, myrtle berries from maritime zones present greater fruit size and amount of bioactive compounds, which means an improvement in the quality of the final product based on this raw material. It can be concluded that both morphological and anthocyanins traits are related to the location of the ecotype and allow selecting the best ecotype for the required applications.

Abstract
Lemon processing generates thousands of tons of residues that can be preserved as flours by thermal treatment to obtain phenolic compounds with beneficial bioactivities. In this study, the effect of different drying temperatures (40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110 °C) on the Total Phenolic Content (TPC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of phenolic compounds present in Citrus. lemon (L.) Burn f waste was determined. Identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were also performed by UPLC-PDA and UPLC-ESI-MS analysis. Eriocitrin (19.79–27.29 mg g−1 DW) and hesperidin (7.63–9.10 mg g−1 DW) were detected as the major phenolic compounds in the flours by UPLC-PDA and confirmed by UPLC-ESI-MS. Antimicrobial activity determined by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was observed. Accordingly, a stable functional flour as a source of bioactive phenolic compounds obtained from lemon residues at 50 °C may be produced as a value-added product useful in various industrial sectors.

Abstract
Research interest regarding maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) has increased over the last years due to its potential health benefits as one of the most antioxidant-rich berries. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) is an advanced green, fast, and ecological extraction technique for the production of high quality extracts from natural products, so it has been proposed in this work as an ideal alternative extraction technique for obtaining extracts of high bioactivity from maqui berries. In order to determine the optimal conditions, the extraction variables (percentage of methanol, pH, temperature, ratio “sample mass/volume of solvent”, amplitude, and cycle) were analyzed by a Box-Behnken design, in conjunction with the response surface method. The statistical analysis revealed that the temperature and the percentage of methanol were the most influential variables on the extraction of the total phenolic compounds and total anthocyanins, respectively. The optimal extraction time was determined at 15 min for total phenolic compounds, while it was only 5 min for anthocyanins. The developed methods showed a high precision level with a coefficient of variation of less than 5%. Finally, the new methods were successfully applied to several real samples. Subsequently, the results were compared to those that were obtained in previous experiments by means of microwave assisted extraction (MAE). Similar extraction yields were obtained for phenolic compounds under optimized conditions. However, UAE proved to be slightly more efficient than MAE in the extraction of anthocyanins.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate different pre-treatments and solvent ratios on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Citrus aurantium (sour orange) peel extracted by ultrasound. A two-factor (2 × 3) factorial design was implemented, with fresh and dry peels as pre-treatment conditions, and water (100%), 50% aqueous ethanol (v/v) and 96% aqueous ethanol (v/v) as the solvents. The phenolic compounds were identified and quantified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array and electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry, respectively. The compounds were partially purified by advanced automated flash purification. The results indicated that the maximal phenolic content (40.95 ± 3.44 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight) was obtained when fresh sour orange peels were extracted with 50% (v/v) aqueous ethanol while the maximal antioxidant activity (730.04 ± 28.60 μmol Trolox equivalents/g dry weight) was achieved from aqueous extraction of dry sour orange peels. Nine phenolic compounds were identified and quantified. Naringin and neohesperidin predominated in sour peel extracts, whereas, caffeic and chlorogenic acids were the least abundant. Evaluation of the antioxidant activity in the fractions suggested that this activity might be attributed to the synergistic effect of the nine phenolic compounds present in the crude extract. Accordingly, sour orange peel is a potential source of phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is being explored in the food industry, and is considered to be one of the healthiest berries due to its bioactive components and high commercial value. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was developed for the determination of total phenolic compounds and anthocyanins from maqui. A Box–Behnken experimental design was employed in conjunction with a response surface methodology to optimize the conditions based on 27 different experiments. The extractions were carried out with four factors (i.e., methanol percentage, pH, temperature, and solvent volume:sample mass ratio), and two responses—total phenolics and anthocyanins. Temperature and methanol percentage were found to be the most influential parameters for total phenolic compounds and anthocyanins, respectively. The optimum MAE conditions were: 65% MeOH in water at pH 2, temperature of 100 °C, and a ratio of 10:0.5 for total phenolics; and 60% MeOH in water at pH 2, temperature of 50 °C, and a ratio of 14:0.5 for anthocyanins. Kinetics assays were carried out and an optimum time of only 2 min was identified for the extractions. Repeatability and intermediate precision were also evaluated, and coefficients of variation below 5% were obtained. The new methods were successfully applied to a foodstuff made with maqui.
