Frequency of Owner-Reported Bacterial Infections in Pet Guinea Pigs

Perception and utilisation of veterinary services by rodent owners in the United Kingdom

BACKGROUND

There is limited research on how rodent owners use and perceive veterinary services and what the demand for pet insurance for these species is.

METHODS

An online survey of owners of pet rodents (guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, gerbils and mice) measured owner confidence in recognising signs of illness, their opinions on and use of veterinary services and their willingness to purchase pet insurance.

RESULTS

A total of 1700 respondents completed the survey. Rat owners had increased confidence in recognising signs of illness, as did owners who acquired their pet from a breeder or rescue centre. Most respondents had used veterinary services, with owners perceiving exotics specialists to have increased knowledge. Economic challenges with accessing veterinary care were common. Where rodents were purchased for children, the amount owners were willing to spend on veterinary care was significantly less.

LIMITATIONS

Responses may have been biased towards keen owners who self-selected to participate in the survey. Respondents were predominantly female, which may have affected willingness to access and pay for veterinary services.

CONCLUSION

Veterinary spending was not affected by income; however, owners who purchased their animal for their children were less willing to pay for veterinary services and pet insurance.

Antibacterial activity of plant extracts against Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus isolates from guinea pigs with lymphadenitis in Ecuador

Lymphadenitis is a commonly occurring and contagious disease in guinea pigs caused by different pathogens, including Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus sp., and Corynebacterium sp. This study aimed to characterize the bacteria isolated from pus extracted from abscessed mandibular lymph nodes of diseased guinea pigs in Ecuador in 2019 and evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of the total extracts of three plant species. Isolates were recovered from three diseased guinea pigs with Lymphadenitis on a farm in Imbabura, Ecuador province. The bacteria were characterized through microbiological, biochemical, and molecular tests as Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus. Furthermore, the susceptibility of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus to three plant extracts belonging to the Asteraceae family, Acmella ciliata, Bidens andicola, and Gazania splendens collected in Ecuador, were assessed in vitro by the microdilution method. Our data indicate that all the evaluated extracts showed activity, with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 22.50 mg/mL for Acmella ciliata, 11.25 mg/mL for Bidens andicola, and 5.60 mg/mL for Gazania splendens. Bidens andicola extract showed the highest efficacy with a % inhibition of 63.90 at the highest tested concentration (45 mg/mL). This is the first report on the bioactivity of these plant species against S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus.

Lower Urinary Tract Diseases in Guinea Pigs: A 14-Year Retrospective Study (2004-2018)

The clinical records of all guinea pigs diagnosed with a lower urinary tract disease in a single veterinary hospital, over a period of 14 years (2004−2018), were retrospectively searched in order to characterize this population and investigate the potential association between the epidemiological and clinical variables. A total of 117 clinical cases were identified, corresponding to 57 animals. Urolithiasis was the most common diagnosis (n = 52; 44.4%), followed by cystitis and/or a urinary tract infection (UTI). Several statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) were found between different variables, showing that female guinea pigs were more likely than the male ones to have a previous family history of urinary disease, to present dysuria and stranguria at admission, and to suffer recurrence. Moreover, males were more prone to urolithiasis and females to cystitis/UTI, and animals diagnosed with cystitis/UTI frequently had more clinical urinary signs and abdominal pain on palpation compared to those diagnosed with urolithiasis. Finally, the use of potassium citrate and the urethrotomy approach were associated with a better therapeutic response. Further studies are needed in larger populations of guinea pigs to confirm the present findings, especially as some of them were described for the first time.

Respiratory Diseases in Guinea Pigs, Chinchillas and Degus

The diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease in pet guinea pigs, chinchillas, and degus still face profoundly serious challenges owing to their relatively small size, conspicuous clinical signs, difficulty for sampling, and insufficient scientific evidence to correlate signs and particular pathologies. This article is intended to summarize the available information on the relevant anatomy, physiology, and respiratory pathology in these species.

Current welfare state of pet guinea pigs in the UK

BACKGROUND

Little research has been carried out into how guinea pigs are cared for in the UK, and information regarding potential welfare issues is sparse. This study was designed to examine the five welfare needs, collecting data on the extent to which these are each met by a sample of UK guinea pig owners.

METHODS

A survey of 4590 owners was conducted.

RESULTS

Guinea pigs were housed in a variety of ways, but a hutch or cage, with no attached run, was the most common enclosure. The majority reportedly lived with a conspecific, although some lived on their own, or with a rabbit. Significant associations between aspects of housing and husbandry, and behaviour and health were found, for example, the frequency of positive behaviours displayed was higher in those guinea pigs housed with a conspecific and those in larger enclosures, while the number of reported health issues was lower in animals receiving green vegetables more often.

CONCLUSION

This study has identified common practices, and highlighted some potential welfare issues, which would benefit from further research. The authors suggest improved availability of targeted information may enable owners to improve issues identified here.
