Abstract
Although polymers are widely used in laser-irradiation research, their microscopic response to high-intensity ultrafast XUV and X-ray irradiation is still largely unknown. Here, we comparatively study a homologous series of alkenes. The XTANT-3 hybrid simulation toolkit is used to determine their damage kinetics and irradiation threshold doses. The code simultaneously models the nonequilibrium electron kinetics, the energy transfer between electrons and atoms via nonadiabatic electron-ion (electron-phonon) coupling, nonthermal modification of the interatomic potential due to electronic excitation, and the ensuing atomic response and damage formation. It is shown that the lowest damage threshold is associated with local defect creation, such as dehydrogenation, various group detachments from the backbone, or polymer strand cross-linking. At higher doses, the disintegration of the molecules leads to a transient metallic liquid state: a nonequilibrium superionic state outside of the material phase diagram. We identify nonthermal effects as the leading mechanism of damage, whereas the thermal (nonadiabatic electron-ion coupling) channel influences the kinetics only slightly in the case of femtosecond-pulse irradiation. Despite the notably different properties of the studied alkene polymers, the ultrafast-X-ray damage threshold doses are found to be very close to ∼0.05 eV/atom in all three materials: polyethylene, polypropylene, and polybutylene.

Abstract
A broadband online X-ray spectrometer has been designed and commissioned at the SUD beamline of the Shanghai Soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser Facility, which can deliver both SASE and seeded FEL pulses to user experiments, spanning the photon energy range of 50-620 eV. The resolving powers of the spectrometer calibrated via online measurement at 92 eV and 249 eV are ∼20000 and ∼15000, respectively, and the absolute photon energy is characterized by an electron time-of-flight spectrometer. The high energy resolution provided by the spectrometer can differentiate the fine structure in the FEL spectrum, to determine its pulse length.

Abstract
To fully exploit ultra-short X-ray pulse durations routinely available at X-ray free-electron lasers to follow out-of-equilibrium dynamics, inherent arrival time fluctuations of the X-ray pulse with an external perturbing laser pulse need to be measured. In this work, two methods of arrival time measurement were compared to measure the arrival time jitter of hard X-ray pulses. The methods were photoelectron streaking by a THz field and a transient refractive index change of a semiconductor. The methods were validated by shot-to-shot correction of a pump-probe transient reflectivity measurement. An ultimate shot-to-shot full width at half-maximum error between the devices of 19.2 ± 0.1 fs was measured.

Abstract
The time-resolved x-ray absorption spectrum of the BT-1T cation (BT-1T+) is theoretically simulated in order to investigate the charge transfer reaction of the system. We employ both trajectory surface hopping and quantum dynamics to simulate the structural evolution over time and the changes in the state populations. To compute the static x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of the ground and excited states, we apply both the time-dependent density functional theory and the coupled cluster singles and doubles method. The results obtained are in good agreement between the methods. It is, furthermore, found that the small structural changes that occur during the reaction have little effect on the static XAS. Hence, the tr-XAS can be computed based on the state populations determined from a nuclear dynamics simulation and one set of static XAS calculations, utilizing the ground state optimized geometry. This approach can save considerable computational resources, as the static spectra need not to be calculated for all geometries. As BT-1T is a relatively rigid molecule, the outlined approach should only be considered when investigating non-radiative decay processes in the vicinity of the Franck-Condon point.

Design of a Hybrid Split-Delay Line for Hard X-ray Free-Electron Lasers. PHOTONICS 2022. [DOI: 10.3390/photonics9030136] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/04/2023]
Abstract
High repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) enable the study of fast dynamics on microsecond time scales. Split-delay lines (SDLs) further bring the time scale down to femtoseconds by splitting and delaying the XFEL pulses. Crystals and multilayers are two common types of optical elements in SDLs, offering either long delay ranges or high temporal accuracy. In this work, we introduce the design of a hybrid SDL for the coherent diffraction endstation of Shanghai High Repetition Rate XFEL and Extreme Light Facility (SHINE). It uses crystals for the first branch and multilayers for the second one, thus simultaneously offering a relatively long delay range and high temporal accuracy. Moreover, a third branch can be installed to switch the SDL to the all-crystal configuration for longer delay ranges.

Abstract
EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB is a new Free Electron Laser (FEL) facility that is currently under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of the INFN. The electron beam driving the FEL will be delivered by an X-band normal conducting LINAC followed by a plasma wakefield acceleration stage. It will be characterized by a small footprint and will deliver ultra-bright photon pulses for experiments in the water window to the user community. In addition to the soft-X-rays beamline already planned in the project, we propose the installation of a second photon beamline with seeded FEL pulses in the range between 50 and 180 nm. Here, we will present the FEL generation scheme, the layout of the dedicated beamline and the potential applications of the FEL radiation source in this low energy range.

Abstract
This contribution presents the initial characterization of the pump-probe performance at the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser. It is demonstrated that time-resolved experiments can be performed by measuring the X-ray/optical cross-correlation exploiting the laser-assisted Auger decay in neon. Applying time-of-arrival corrections based on simultaneous spectral encoding measurements allow us to significantly improve the temporal resolution of this experiment. These results pave the way for ultrafast pump-probe investigations of gaseous media at the SQS instrument combining intense and tunable soft X-rays with versatile optical laser capabilities.

Abstract
A fast and robust, yet simple, method has been developed for the immediate characterization of x-ray pulse durations via IR/THz streaking that uses the center of energy (COE) of the photoelectron spectrum for the evaluation. The manuscript presents theory and numerical models demonstrating that the maximum COEs shift as a function of the pulse duration and compares them to existing data for validation. It further establishes that the maximum COE can be derived from two COE measurements set at a phase of π/2 apart. The theory, model, and data agree with each other very well, and they present a way to measure pulse durations ranging from sub-fs to tens of fs on-the-fly with a fairly simple experimental setup.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a new setup for the measurement of element-specific ultrafast magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic thin films with a sub-15-fs time resolution. Our experiment relies on a split and delay approach which allows us to fully exploit the shortest X-rays pulses delivered by X-ray Free Electrons Lasers (close to the attosecond range), in an X-ray pump - X-ray probe geometry. The setup performance is demonstrated by measuring the ultrafast elemental response of Ni and Fe during demagnetization of ferromagnetic Ni and Ni80Fe20 (Permalloy) samples upon resonant excitation at the corresponding absorption edges. The transient demagnetization process is measured in both reflection and transmission geometry using, respectively, the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) and the Faraday effect as probing mechanisms.

Abstract
The THz-field-driven streak camera has proven to be a powerful diagnostic-technique that enables the shot-to-shot characterization of the duration and the arrival time jitter of free electron laser (FEL) pulses. Here we investigate the performance of three computational approaches capable to determine the duration of FEL pulses with complex temporal structures from single-shot measurements of up to three simultaneously recorded spectra. We use numerically simulated FEL pulses in order to validate the accuracy of the pulse length retrieval in average as well as in a single-shot mode. We discuss requirements for the THz field strength in order to achieve reliable results and compare our numerical study with the analysis of experimental data that were obtained at the FEL in Hamburg - FLASH.

Abstract
To date, alternating co-polymers based on electron-rich and electron-poor units are the most attractive materials to control functionality of organic semiconductor layers in which ultrafast excited-state processes play a key role. We present a computational study of the photoinduced excited-state dynamics of the 4-(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BT-1T) molecule, which is a common building block in the backbone of π-conjugated polymers used for organic electronics. In contrast to homo-polymer materials, such as oligothiophene, BT-1T has two non-identical units, namely, thiophene and benzothiadiazole, making it attractive for intramolecular charge transfer studies. To gain a thorough understanding of the coupling of excited-state dynamics with nuclear motion, we consider a scenario based on femtosecond time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy using an x-ray free-electron laser in combination with a synchronized ultraviolet femtosecond laser. Using Tully's fewest switches surface hopping approach in combination with excited-state calculations at the level of configuration interaction singles, we calculate the gas-phase x-ray absorption spectrum at the carbon and nitrogen K edges as a function of time after excitation to the lowest electronically excited state. The results of our time-resolved calculations exhibit the charge transfer driven by non-Born-Oppenheimer physics from the benzothiadiazole to thiophene units during relaxation to the ground state. Furthermore, our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the excited-state relaxation processes involve bond elongation in the benzothiadiazole unit as well as thiophene ring puckering at a time scale of 100 fs. We show that these dynamical trends can be identified from the time-dependent x-ray absorption spectrum.

Abstract
Many of the scientific applications for X-ray free-electron lasers seek to exploit the ultrashort pulse durations of intense X-rays to obtain femtosecond time resolution of various processes in a "pump-probe" scheme. One of the limiting factors for such experiments is the timing jitter between the X-rays and ultrashort pulses from more conventional lasers operating at near-optical wavelengths. In this work, we investigate the potential of using X-ray-induced changes in the optical second harmonic generation efficiency of a nonlinear crystal to retrieve single-shot arrival times of X-ray pulses with respect to optical laser pulses. Our experimental results and simulations show changes to the efficiency of the second harmonic generation of 12%, approximately three times larger than the measured changes in the transmission of the 800 nm center-wavelength fundamental pulse. Further experiments showing even larger changes in the transmission of 400 nm center-wavelength pulses show that the mechanism of the second harmonic generation efficiency modulation is mainly the result of X-ray-induced changes in the linear absorption coefficients near 400 nm. We demonstrate and characterize a cross-correlation tool based on this effect in reference to a previously demonstrated method of X-ray/optical cross-correlation.

Abstract
As a demonstration of the analysis of the electronic structure and the nuclear dynamics from time-resolved near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (TR-NEXAFS), we present the TR-NEXAFS spectra of pyrazine following the excitation to the 1B2u(ππ*) state. The spectra are calculated combining the frozen-core/core-valence separated equation-of-motion coupled cluster singles and doubles approach for the spectral signatures and the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for the wave packet propagation. The population decay from the 1B2u(ππ*) state to the 1B3u(nπ*) and 1Au(nπ*) states, followed by oscillatory flow of population between the 1B3u(nπ*) and 1Au(nπ*) states, is interpreted by means of visualization of the potential energy curves and the reduced nuclear densities. By examining the electronic structure of the three valence-excited states and the final core-excited states, we observe that the population dynamics is explicitly reflected in the TR-NEXAFS spectra, especially when the heteroatoms are selected as the X-ray absorption sites. This work illustrates the feasibility of extracting fine details of molecular photophysical processes from TR-NEXAFS spectra by using currently available theoretical methods.

Abstract
The ability to produce ultrashort, high-brightness X-ray pulses is revolutionizing the field of ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy. Free-electron laser (FEL) facilities are driving this revolution, but unique aspects of the FEL process make the required characterization and use of the pulses challenging. In this paper, we describe a number of developments in the generation of ultrashort X-ray FEL pulses, and the concomitant progress in the experimental capabilities necessary for their characterization and use at the Linac Coherent Light Source. This includes the development of sub-femtosecond hard and soft X-ray pulses, along with ultrafast characterization techniques for these pulses. We also describe improved techniques for optical cross-correlation as needed to address the persistent challenge of external optical laser synchronization with these ultrashort X-ray pulses. This article is part of the theme issue 'Measurement of ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics with X-rays'.

Abstract
A simple and very fast method for reconstruction of temporal structure of linearly polarized FEL pulses from the THz streaking spectra of photoelectrons is suggested. The method is based on a quantum mechanical approach within the strong-field approximation. The method is suitable for online retrieval of the temporal characteristics of the FEL pulses. It can be applied for any photon frequency in a broad range of FEL pulse duration with a proper selection of the streaking field. To enhance its accuracy, it is suggested to simultaneously analyze the streaking spectra for several emission angles.

Abstract
A review that summarizes the most recent technological developments in the field of ultrafast structural dynamics with focus on the use of ultrashort X-ray and electron pulses follows. Atomistic views of chemical processes and phase transformations have long been the exclusive domain of computer simulators. The advent of femtosecond (fs) hard X-ray and fs-electron diffraction techniques made it possible to bring such a level of scrutiny to the experimental area. The following review article provides a summary of the main ultrafast techniques that enabled the generation of atomically resolved movies utilizing ultrashort X-ray and electron pulses. Recent advances are discussed with emphasis on synchrotron-based methods, tabletop fs-X-ray plasma sources, ultrabright fs-electron diffractometers, and timing techniques developed to further improve the temporal resolution and fully exploit the use of intense and ultrashort X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) pulses.
