Stochastic Electrodynamics: The Closest Classical Approximation to Quantum Theory

The Dirac Equation, Mass and Arithmetic by Permutations of Automaton States

The cornerstones of the Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics are its underlying ontological states that evolve by permutations. They do not create would-be quantum mechanical superposition states. We review this with a classical automaton consisting of an Ising spin chain which is then related to the Weyl equation in the continuum limit. Based on this and generalizing, we construct a new "Necklace of Necklaces" automaton with a torus-like topology that lends itself to represent the Dirac equation in 1 + 1 dimensions. Special attention has to be paid to its mass term, which necessitates this enlarged structure and a particular scattering operator contributing to the step-wise updates of the automaton. As discussed earlier, such deterministic models of discrete spins or bits unavoidably become quantum mechanical, when only slightly deformed.

Molecular Interactions Induced by a Static Electric Field in Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Electrodynamics

By means of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics applied to coupled harmonic Drude oscillators, we study the interaction between two neutral atoms or molecules subject to a uniform static electric field. Our focus is to understand the interplay between leading contributions to field-induced electrostatics/polarization and dispersion interactions, as considered within the employed Drude model for both non-retarded and retarded regimes. For the first case, we present an exact solution for two coupled oscillators obtained by diagonalizing the corresponding quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian and demonstrate that the external field can control the strength of different intermolecular interactions and relative orientations of the molecules. In the retarded regime described by quantum electrodynamics, our analysis shows that field-induced electrostatic and polarization energies remain unchanged (in isotropic and homogeneous vacuum) compared to the non-retarded case. For interacting species modeled by quantum Drude oscillators, the developed framework based on quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics yields the leading contributions to molecular interactions under the combined action of external and vacuum fields.

Hydrodynamic quantum analogs

The walking droplet system discovered by Yves Couder and Emmanuel Fort presents an example of a vibrating particle self-propelling through a resonant interaction with its own wave field. It provides a means of visualizing a particle as an excitation of a field, a common notion in quantum field theory. Moreover, it represents the first macroscopic realization of a form of dynamics proposed for quantum particles by Louis de Broglie in the 1920s. The fact that this hydrodynamic pilot-wave system exhibits many features typically associated with the microscopic, quantum realm raises a number of intriguing questions. At a minimum, it extends the range of classical systems to include quantum-like statistics in a number of settings. A more optimistic stance is that it suggests the manner in which quantum mechanics might be completed through a theoretical description of particle trajectories. We here review the experimental studies of the walker system, and the hierarchy of theoretical models developed to rationalize its behavior. Particular attention is given to enumerating the dynamical mechanisms responsible for the emergence of robust, structured statistical behavior. Another focus is demonstrating how the temporal nonlocality of the droplet dynamics, as results from the persistence of its pilot wave field, may give rise to behavior that appears to be spatially nonlocal. Finally, we describe recent explorations of a generalized theoretical framework that provides a mathematical bridge between the hydrodynamic pilot-wave system and various realist models of quantum dynamics.

Energy Considerations of Classical Electromagnetic Zero-Point Radiation and a Specific Probability Calculation in Stochastic Electrodynamics

The zero-point (ZP) radiation field in stochastic electrodynamics (SED) is considered to be formally infinite, or perhaps bounded by mechanisms yet to be revealed someday. A similar situation holds in quantum electrodynamics (QED), although there the ZP field is considered to be “virtual”. The first part of this article addresses the concern by some about the related disturbing concept of “extracting energy” from this formally, enormous source of energy. The second part of this article introduces a new method for calculating probabilities of fields in SED, which can be extended to linear oscillators in SED.
