Understanding the Pivotal Role of the Vagus Nerve in Health from Pandemics

The brain-liver cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and viral infections

Efferent cholinergic signaling is a critical and targetable source of immunoregulation. The vagus nerve (VN) is the primary source of cholinergic signaling in the body, and partially innervates hepatic functionality through the liver-brain axis. Virus-induced disruption of cholinergic signaling may promote pathogenesis in hepatotropic and neurotropic viruses. Therefore, restoring VN functionality could be a novel therapeutic strategy to alleviate pathogenic inflammation in hepatotropic and neurotropic viral infections alike. In this minireview, we discuss the physiological importance of cholinergic signaling in maintaining liver-brain axis homeostasis. Next, we explore mechanisms by which the VN is perturbed by viral infections, and how non-invasive restoration of cholinergic signaling pathways with bioelectronic medicine (BEM) might ameliorate hepatic inflammation and neuroinflammation in certain viral infections.

Application of Original Therapy for Stimulation of Oral Areas Innervated by the Trigeminal Nerve in a Child with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome

About 90% of children diagnosed with classic BWS have macroglossia, and 40% of them are submitted to surgical tongue reduction. The purpose of our article is to present a case study of a 5-month-old child with BWS who was treated with an original therapy for stimulation of oral areas innervated by the trigeminal nerve. The therapy included stimulation of the upper and lower lip and muscles of the floor of the mouth. The treatment was provided by a therapist once a week. In addition, the child was stimulated every day at home by his mother. After 3 months, a significant improvement in oral alignment and function was achieved. Preliminary observations of therapy application for stimulation regions innervated by the trigeminal nerve in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome seem promising. The original therapy for stimulation of oral areas innervated by the trigeminal nerve is a good alternative to existing methods of surgical tongue reduction in children with BWS and macroglossia.

The Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Infection on Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies with Control Groups

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction can arise after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and heart rate variability (HRV) tests can assess its integrity. This review investigated the relationship between the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on HRV parameters. Comprehensive searches were conducted in four electronic databases. Observational studies with a control group reporting the direct impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the HRV parameters in July 2022 were included. A total of 17 observational studies were included in this review. The square root of the mean squared differences of successive NN intervals (RMSSD) was the most frequently investigated. Some studies found that decreases in RMSSD and high frequency (HF) power were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection or the poor prognosis of COVID-19. Also, decreases in RMSSD and increases in the normalized unit of HF power were related to death in critically ill COVID-19 patients. The findings showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the severity and prognosis of COVID-19, are likely to be reflected in some HRV-related parameters. However, the considerable heterogeneity of the included studies was highlighted. The methodological quality of the included observational studies was not optimal. The findings suggest rigorous and accurate measurements of HRV parameters are highly needed on this topic.
