LSCS-Net: A lightweight skin cancer segmentation network with densely connected multi-rate atrous convolution

The rising occurrence and notable public health consequences of skin cancer, especially of the most challenging form known as melanoma, have created an urgent demand for more advanced approaches to disease management. The integration of modern computer vision methods into clinical procedures offers the potential for enhancing the detection of skin cancer . The UNet model has gained prominence as a valuable tool for this objective, continuously evolving to tackle the difficulties associated with the inherent diversity of dermatological images. These challenges stem from diverse medical origins and are further complicated by variations in lighting, patient characteristics, and hair density. In this work, we present an innovative end-to-end trainable network crafted for the segmentation of skin cancer . This network comprises an encoder-decoder architecture, a novel feature extraction block, and a densely connected multi-rate Atrous convolution block. We evaluated the performance of the proposed lightweight skin cancer segmentation network (LSCS-Net) on three widely used benchmark datasets for skin lesion segmentation: ISIC 2016, ISIC 2017, and ISIC 2018. The generalization capabilities of LSCS-Net are testified by the excellent performance on breast cancer and thyroid nodule segmentation datasets. The empirical findings confirm that LSCS-net attains state-of-the-art results, as demonstrated by a significantly elevated Jaccard index.

DTONet a Lightweight Model for Melanoma Segmentation

With the further development of neural networks, automatic segmentation techniques for melanoma are becoming increasingly mature, especially under the conditions of abundant hardware resources. This allows for the accuracy of segmentation to be improved by increasing the complexity and computational capacity of the model. However, a new problem arises when it comes to actual applications, as there may not be the high-end hardware available, especially in hospitals and among the general public, who may have limited computing resources. In response to this situation, this paper proposes a lightweight deep learning network that can achieve high segmentation accuracy with minimal resource consumption. We introduce a network called DTONet (double-tailed octave network), which was specifically designed for this purpose. Its computational parameter count is only 30,859, which is 1/256th of the mainstream UNet model. Despite its reduced complexity, DTONet demonstrates superior performance in terms of accuracy, with an IOU improvement over other similar models. To validate the generalization capability of this model, we conducted tests on the PH2 dataset, and the results still outperformed existing models. Therefore, the proposed DTONet network exhibits excellent generalization ability and is sufficiently outstanding.

Segmentation and classification of skin lesions using hybrid deep learning method in the Internet of Medical Things

INTRODUCTION

Particularly within the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) context, skin lesion analysis is critical for precise diagnosis. To improve the accuracy and efficiency of skin lesion analysis, CAD systems play a crucial role. To segment and classify skin lesions from dermoscopy images, this study focuses on using hybrid deep learning techniques.

METHOD

This research uses a hybrid deep learning model that combines two cutting-edge approaches: Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (MRCNN) for semantic segmentation and ResNet50 for lesion detection. To pinpoint the precise location of a skin lesion, the MRCNN is used for border delineation. We amass a huge, annotated collection of dermoscopy images for thorough model training. The hybrid deep learning model to capture subtle representations of the images is trained from start to finish using this dataset.

RESULTS

The experimental results using dermoscopy images show that the suggested hybrid method outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods. The model's capacity to segment lesions into distinct groups is demonstrated by a segmentation accuracy measurement of 95.49 percent. In addition, the classification of skin lesions shows great accuracy and dependability, which is a notable advancement over traditional methods. The model is put through its paces on the ISIC 2020 Challenge dataset, scoring a perfect 96.75% accuracy. Compared to current best practices in IoMT, segmentation and classification models perform exceptionally well.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this paper's hybrid deep learning strategy is highly effective in skin lesion segmentation and classification. The results show that the model has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy in the setting of IoMT, and it outperforms the current gold standards. The excellent results obtained on the ISIC 2020 Challenge dataset further confirm the viability and superiority of the suggested methodology for skin lesion analysis.
