Novel Computerized Method for Measurement of Retinal Vessel Diameters

Retinal Blood Vessel Tracking and Diameter Estimation via Gaussian Process With Rider Optimization Algorithm

Retinal blood vessels structure analysis is an important step in the detection of ocular diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Accurate tracking and estimation of retinal blood vessels in terms of their diameter remains a major challenge in retinal structure analysis. In this research, we develop a rider-based Gaussian approach for accurate tracking and diameter estimation of retinal blood vessels. The diameter and curvature of the blood vessel are assumed as the Gaussian processes. The features are determined for training the Gaussian process using Radon transform. The kernel hyperparameter of Gaussian processes is optimized using Rider Optimization Algorithm for evaluating the direction of the vessel. Multiple Gaussian processes are used for detecting the bifurcations and the difference in the prediction direction is quantified. The performance of the proposed Rider-based Gaussian process is evaluated with mean and standard deviation. Our method achieved high performance with the standard deviation of 0.2499 and mean average of 0.0147, which outperformed the state-of-the-art method by 6.32%. Although the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art method in normal blood vessels, in future research, one can include tortuous blood vessels of different retinopathy patients, which would be more challenging due to large angle variations. We used Rider-based Gaussian process for tracking blood vessels to obtain the diameter of retinal blood vessels, and the method performed well on the "STrutred Analysis of the REtina (STARE) Database" accessed on Oct. 2020 (https://cecas.clemson.edu/~ahoover/stare/). To the best of our knowledge, this experiment is one of the most recent analysis using this type of algorithm.

Efficient Liver Segmentation from Computed Tomography Images Using Deep Learning

Segmentation of a liver in computed tomography (CT) images is an important step toward quantitative biomarkers for a computer-aided decision support system and precise medical diagnosis. To overcome the difficulties that come across the liver segmentation that are affected by fuzzy boundaries, stacked autoencoder (SAE) is applied to learn the most discriminative features of the liver among other tissues in abdominal images. In this paper, we propose a patch-based deep learning method for the segmentation of a liver from CT images using SAE. Unlike the traditional machine learning methods, instead of anticipating pixel by pixel learning, our algorithm utilizes the patches to learn the representations and identify the liver area. We preprocessed the whole dataset to get the enhanced images and converted each image into many overlapping patches. These patches are given as input to SAE for unsupervised feature learning. Finally, the learned features with labels of the images are fine tuned, and the classification is performed to develop the probability map in a supervised way. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm shows satisfactory results on test images. Our method achieved a 96.47% dice similarity coefficient (DSC), which is better than other methods in the same domain.

Artificial intelligence model driven by transfer learning for image-based medical diagnosis

Artificial intelligent (AI) systems for clinical-decision support are an important tool in clinical routine. It has become a crucial diagnostic tool with adequate reliability and interpretability in disease diagnosis and monitoring. Undoubtedly, these models are faced with insufficient data challenges for training, which often directly determines the model’s performance. In order word, insufficient data for model training leads to inefficiency in the model built. To overcome this problem, we propose an AI-driven model by transfer learning in accurate diagnosis for medical decision support. Our approach leverages the shortage of data with a pretrained model by training the neural network with a fraction of the new dataset. For this purpose, we utilized the VGG19 network as the backbone network to support our model in integrating known features with the newly learned features for accurate diagnosis and decision making. Integrating this trained model speeds up the training phase and improve the performance of the proposed model. Experimental results show that the proposed model is effective and efficient in diagnosing different medical diseases. As such, we anticipated that this diagnosis tool will ultimately aid in facilitating early treatment of these treatable diseases, which will improve clinical out-comes.

Retinal vessel changes in cerebrovascular disease

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

The retina is growingly recognized as a window into cerebrovascular and systemic vascular conditions. The utility of noninvasive retinal vessel biomarkers in cerebrovascular risk assessment has expanded due to advances in retinal imaging techniques and machine learning-based digital analysis. The purpose of this review is to underscore the latest evidence linking retinal vascular abnormalities with stroke and vascular-related cognitive disorders; to highlight modern developments in retinal vascular imaging modalities and software-based vasculopathy quantification.

RECENT FINDINGS

Longitudinal studies undertaken for extended periods indicate that retinal vascular changes can predict cerebrovascular disorders (CVD). Cerebrovascular ties to dementia provoked recent explorations of retinal vessel imaging tools for conceivable early cognitive decline detection. Innovative biomedical engineering technologies and advanced dynamic and functional retinal vascular imaging methods have recently been added to the armamentarium, allowing an unbiased and comprehensive analysis of the retinal vasculature. Improved artificial intelligence-based deep learning algorithms have boosted the application of retinal imaging as a clinical and research tool to screen, risk stratify, and monitor with precision CVD and vascular cognitive impairment.

SUMMARY

Mounting evidence supports the use of quantitative retinal vessel analysis in predicting CVD, from clinical stroke to neuroimaging markers of stroke and neurodegeneration.

A Review on the Extraction of Quantitative Retinal Microvascular Image Feature

Digital image processing is one of the most widely used computer vision technologies in biomedical engineering. In the present modern ophthalmological practice, biomarkers analysis through digital fundus image processing analysis greatly contributes to vision science. This further facilitates developments in medical imaging, enabling this robust technology to attain extensive scopes in biomedical engineering platform. Various diagnostic techniques are used to analyze retinal microvasculature image to enable geometric features measurements such as vessel tortuosity, branching angles, branching coefficient, vessel diameter, and fractal dimension. These extracted markers or characterized fundus digital image features provide insights and relates quantitative retinal vascular topography abnormalities to various pathologies such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, hypertensive retinopathy, transient ischemic attack, neovascular glaucoma, and cardiovascular diseases. Apart from that, this noninvasive research tool is automated, allowing it to be used in large-scale screening programs, and all are described in this present review paper. This paper will also review recent research on the image processing-based extraction techniques of the quantitative retinal microvascular feature. It mainly focuses on features associated with the early symptom of transient ischemic attack or sharp stroke.
