Electrochemical Detection of Electrolytes Using a Solid-State Ion-Selective Electrode of Single-Piece Type Membrane

Photoluminescence Sensing of Chloride Ions in Sea Sand Using Alcohol-Dispersed CsPbBr3@SiO2 Perovskite Nanocrystal Composites

In this study, CsPbBr3@SiO2 perovskite nanocrystal composites (CsPbBr3@SiO2 PNCCs) were synthesized by a benzyl bromide nucleophilic substitution strategy. Homogeneous halide exchange between CsPbBr3@SiO2 PNCCs and Cl− solution (aqueous phase) was applied to the determination of Cl− in sea sand samples. Fast halide exchange with Cl− in the aqueous phase without any magnetic stirring or pH regulation resulted in the blue shift of the photoluminescence (PL) wavelength and vivid PL color changes from green to blue. The results show that the PL sensing of Cl− in aqueous samples could be implemented by using the halide exchange of CsPbBr3@SiO2 PNCCs. A linear relationship between the PL wavelength shift and the Cl− concentration in the range of 0 to 3.0% was found, which was applied to the determination of Cl− concentration in sea sand samples. This method greatly simplifies the detection process and provides a new idea for further broadening PL sensing using the CsPbBr3 PNC halide.

A novel chloride selective potentiometric sensor based on graphitic carbon nitride/silver chloride (g-C3N4/AgCl) composite as the sensing element

In this research, AgCl anchored graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was introduced as a novel potentiometric sensing element. A g-C₃N₄/AgCl-modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) was fabricated and used as an outstandingly selective potentiometric sensor to determine Cl^- in water samples. The g-C₃N₄/AgCl nanocomposite was characterized with SEM, XRD and FT-IR techniques. It was demonstrated that, the incorporation of 5% of g-C₃N₄/AgCl, as a chloride ionophore in a CPE, results in a stable potential response of the electrode to chloride ion. The Nernstian slope of the electrode response was 55.4 (±0.3) mVdecade^-1, over a wide linear concentration range of 1 × 10^-6-1 × 10^-1 mol L^-1 and the detection limit of the electrode was estimated to be 4.0 × 10^-7 mol L^-1. The g-C₃N₄/AgCl-modified CPE electrode provided fast response time and long-term stability (more than 2 months) while the potential interfering ions such as I^-, Br^-, and CN^- showed no significant effect on the potential response. Since these interfering ions affected the response of the CPE electrode, modified with AgCl, highlighting the interesting effect of g-C₃N₄ on the sensor performance. This innovative electrode was shown to be a sensitive and accurate sensor for chloride ion content estimation in water samples.

Electrochemical Devices to Monitor Ionic Analytes for Healthcare and Industrial Applications

Recent advances in electrochemical devices have sparked exciting opportunities in the healthcare, environment, and food industries. These devices can be fabricated at low costs and are capable of multiplex monitoring. This overcomes challenges presnted in traditional sensors for biomolecules and provides us a unique gateway toward comprehensive analyses. The advantages of electrochemical sensors are derived from their direct integration with electronics and their high selectivity along with sensitivity to sense a wide range of ionic analytes at an economical cost. This review paper aims to summarize recent innovations of a wide variety of electrochemical sensors for ionic analytes for health care and industrial applications. Many of these ionic analytes are important biomarkers to target for new diagnostic tools for medicine, food quality monitoring, and pollution detection. In this paper, we will examine various fabrication techniques, sensing mechanisms, and will also discuss various future opportunities in this research direction.

A Dual Electrode Biosensor for Glucose and Lactate Measurement in Normal and Prolonged Obese Mice Using Single Drop of Whole Blood

Understanding the levels of glucose (G) and lactate (L) in blood can help us regulate various chronic health conditions such as obesity. In this paper, we introduced an enzyme-based electrochemical biosensor adopting glucose oxidase and lactate oxidase on two working screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) to sequentially determine glucose and lactate concentrations in a single drop (~30 µL) of whole blood. We developed a diet-induced obesity (DIO) mouse model for 28 weeks and monitored the changes in blood glucose and lactate levels. A linear calibration curve for glucose and lactate concentrations in ranges from 0.5 to 35 mM and 0.5 to 25 mM was obtained with R-values of 0.99 and 0.97, respectively. A drastic increase in blood glucose and a small but significant increase in blood lactate were seen only in prolonged obese cases. The ratio of lactate concentration to glucose concentration (L/G) was calculated as the mouse’s gained weight. The results demonstrated that an L/G value of 0.59 could be used as a criterion to differentiate between normal and obesity conditions. With L/G and weight gain, we constructed a diagnostic plot that could categorize normal and obese health conditions into four different zones. The proposed dual electrode biosensor for glucose and lactate in mouse whole blood showed good stability, selectivity, sensitivity, and efficiency. Thus, we believe that this dual electrode biosensor and the diagnostic plot could be used as a sensitive analytical tool for diagnosing glucose and lactate biomarkers in clinics and for monitoring obesity.
