Microwave-Assisted Homogeneous Acid Catalysis and Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of Dialkyl Succinate in a Flow Reactor

Synthesis of Quaternary Spirooxindole 2H-Azirines under Batch and Continuous Flow Condition and Metal Assisted Umpolung Reactivity for the Ring-Opening Reaction

An efficient and new approach for the synthesis of spirooxindole 2H-azirines via intramolecular oxidative cyclization of 3-(amino(phenyl)methylene)-indolin-2-one derivatives in the presence of I₂ and Cs₂ CO₃ under batch/continuous flow is described. This method is mild and facile to synthesize a variety of spirooxindole 2H-azirines derivatives in gram-scale. Furthermore, we have synthesized spiroaziridine derivatives from spirooxindole 2H-azirines derivatives via addition of Grignard reagent. In addition, we discloses an metal assisted attack of Grignard nucleophile at N-centre rather than C- of the spirooxindole 2H-azirines, which concurrently underwent ring opening of transient aziridines to afford N-substituted Z-3-(aminophenyl)indolin-2-one. A plausible mechanism for azirination and ring-opening reaction is also presented.

Recent catalytic routes for the preparation and the upgrading of biomass derived furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Furans represent one of the most important classes of intermediates in the conversion of non-edible lignocellulosic biomass into bio-based chemicals and fuels. At present, bio-furan derivatives are generally obtained from cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of biomass via the acid-catalyzed dehydration of their relative C6-C5 sugars and then converted into a wide range of products. Furfural (FUR) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are surely the most used furan-based feedstocks since their chemical structure allows the preparation of various high-value-added chemicals. Among several well-established catalytic approaches, hydrogenation and oxygenation processes have been efficiently adopted for upgrading furans; however, harsh reaction conditions are generally required. In this review, we aim to discuss the conversion of biomass derived FUR and HMF through unconventional (transfer hydrogenation, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic) catalytic processes promoted by heterogeneous catalytic systems. The reaction conditions adopted, the chemical nature and the physico-chemical properties of the most employed heterogeneous systems in enhancing the catalytic activity and in driving the selectivity to desired products are presented and compared. At the same time, the latest results in the production of FUR and HMF through novel environmental friendly processes starting from lignocellulose as well as from wastes and by-products obtained in the processing of biomass are also overviewed.

Microwave synthesis of novel halogenated β-enaminonitriles linked 9-bromo-1H-benzo[f]chromene moieties: Induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human cancer cells via dual inhibition of topoisomerase I and II

A novel series of halogenated β-enaminonitriles (4a-m), linked 9-bromo-1H-benzo[f]-hromene moieties, were synthesized via microwave irradiation and were predestined for their cytotoxic activity versus three cancer cell lines, namely: MCF-7, HCT-116, and HepG-2. Several of the tested compounds showed high growth inhibitory activities versus the tumor cell lines. Particularly, compounds 4c, 4d, 4f, 4h, 4j, 4l, and 4m demonstrated superior antitumor activities against the aforementioned cell lines. Moreover, the apoptosis process in all the tested cells was induced by compounds 4c, 4d, 4h, 4l, and 4m, as observed by the Annexin V/PI double staining flow cytometric assay. The DNA flow, cytometric analysis revealed that these compounds prompted cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phases. Furthermore, the topoisomerase catalytic activity assays indicated that these compounds inhibited both the topoisomerase I and II enzymes.
