Enhanced Tribological Properties of Polymer Composite Coating Containing Graphene at Room and Elevated Temperatures

Tribological Research of Resin Composites with the Fillers of Glass Powder and Micro-Bubbles

This study investigates the tribological properties of resin composites reinforced with the fillers of glass powder and micro-bubbles. Resin composites were prepared with varying concentrations from 1% to 5% wt of fillers. Tribological tests were conducted using a block-on-ring scheme under dry friction conditions. The measurements of friction coefficient and wear values were performed under variable rotation speeds and loading conditions. The study showed that resin composites with 2-3% glass powder fillers and resin composites with 3-4% micro-bubbles exhibited optimal tribological properties. The resin glass powder modifications reduce the wear by 63% and resin micro-bubbles reduce wear by 32%. SEM analysis of the surfaces revealed surface imperfections and structural damage mechanisms, including abrasive and fatigue wear. The study concludes that specific filler concentrations improve the friction and wear resistance of resin composites, highlighting the importance of material preparation and surface quality in tribological performance. The increased wear resistance on both composites would hopefully expand the usage of additive manufactured composite, namely industrial moving components such as polymer gear, wheel, pulley, etc.

The Impact of Selected Atmospheric Conditions on the Process of Abrasive Wear of CFRP

The aim of this study was to examine the impact of weathering and thermal shocks on the abrasive wear of epoxy resin composites reinforced with carbon fabric that are commonly used in aviation. The composite was exposed to degradation in an apparatus simulating weathering and thermal shocks and then subjected to an abrasion process, with and without the presence of water. The abrasive wear was controlled by checking the weight loss as well as by visual inspection. The research findings indicated a significant effect of the presence of water in the process of friction upon the deterioration of composite resistance to abrasion with regard to dry friction. The long-term impact of rapid cyclic temperature changes (temperature difference: from −56.5 °C to +60 °C) and a combined effect of UV-A (0.83 W/m²), along with condensation of vapor and an increased ambient temperature (above 50 °C), influenced an improvement in resistance to abrasive wear. The environment of thermal shocks diminished abrasive wear to a much smaller extent than after exploitation in an environment of weathering but both environments contributed to the degradation of the surface layer. Additionally, the environment with UV-A radiation resulted in exposure of the composite reinforcement already after four months of environmental impact.

Enhancement in Nanomechanical, Thermal, and Abrasion Properties of SiO2 Nanoparticle-Modified Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy formulations containing 1%, 3%, and 5% SiO2 nanoparticles (SNPs) were produced and applied to mild steel substrates in order to improve their thermal, nanomechanical, and abrasion resistance. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to analyze the dispersion of nanoparticles in the final coating samples, and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to confirm the presence of nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to measure the thermal resistance of the prepared coatings. Conventional techniques were used to measure the impact and scratch resistance. For nanomechanical testing, nanoindentation was performed using a Berkovich-type indenter. Using a taber abraser, the abrasion properties of the coatings were measured. The FE-SEM images indicated good dispersion of the nanoparticles at all three different loading levels. The scratch, impact, and hardness of coatings improved with the addition of the SNPs. Nanomechanical properties, such as hardness and elastic modulus, improved when compared to the unmodified coatings. The thermal and abrasion resistances of the coatings improved with the increase in the SNPs content of the coatings. The highest mechanical, thermal, and abrasion properties were obtained for the coatings with 5% SNP content.

Preparation and Tribological Study of Graphene Coating on Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite Using Modified Percolating-Assisted Resin Film Infusion Method

Tribological properties of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites used in reciprocating contact should be improved to secure the efficiency and safety because of risks of abrasion, adhesion, and fatigue deficiency amidst fiber, matrix, or interphase. This paper investigates the influence of graphene reinforcement on the wear resistance of a GFRP composite. Graphene was integrated into a typical GFRP composite as the surface coating using a modified resin film infusion method with the percolating paper assisted. Dry reciprocating sliding tests were performed against a stainless steel ball moving in a direction 45 degrees to the fiber orientation. The morphology of the worn surface was observed, and the corresponding wear mechanisms are discussed. Results suggest that the prepared graphene coating improves the wear resistance of the GFRP composite. The protected GFRP laminates remained intact during the first 20 min of the wear test and only a small fraction of fibers were broken after 60 min test. Furthermore, abrasive debris and fiber breaks originating from composite were markedly reduced, likely owing to the formation of a protective transfer film between the surface of the modified composite and the rubbing counterpart.

Molecular Dynamics Study on the Tribological Properties of Phosphorene/Polyethylene Composites

This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of phosphorene in enhancing the friction behaviors of polyethylene using molecular dynamics. A sliding model was constructed to investigate the coefficient of friction and abrasion rate of composites by applying a tangential velocity on a rigid tip. Both the size and number of layers of phosphorene had positive effects on the friction force of composites but through different mechanisms. The former was because the interaction between phosphorene and polyethylene increased with the size of phosphorene, while the latter was through influencing the thermal transport across phosphorene and polyethylene interfaces. The rate of improvement decreased with the increased layer number of phosphorene due to the fact that the phosphorene tended to congregate together and thus formed multi-layer agglomerates. The friction behavior of the composites was highly anisotropic because of the high divergence of potential-energy on the phosphorene surface. These findings have provided insights into enhancing the friction behavior of polymer filled by phosphorene.
