Robust Baseband Compression Against Congestion in Packet-Based Fronthaul Networks Using Multiple Description Coding

An SDR-Based Experimental Study of Reliable and Low-Latency Ethernet-Based Fronthaul with MAC-PHY Split

Cloud-Radio Access Network (RAN) is one of the architectural solutions for those mobile networks that aim to provide an infrastructure that satisfies the communication needs of a wide range of services and deployments. In Cloud-RAN, functions can be flexibly split between central and distributed units, which enables the use of different types of transport network. Ethernet-based fronthaul can be an attractive solution for Cloud-RAN. On the one hand, the deployment of Ethernet-based fronthaul enables Cloud-RAN to provide more diverse, flexible and cost-efficient solutions. On the other hand, Ethernet-based fronthaul requires packetized communication, which imposes challenges to delivering stringent latency requirements between RAN functionalities. In this paper, we set up a hardware experiment based on Cloud-RAN with a low layer split, particularly between medium access control and the physical layer. The aim is to demonstrate how multi-path and channel coding over the fronthaul can improve fronthaul reliability while ensuring that: (i) latency results meet the standard requirements; and (ii) the overall system operates properly. Our results show that the proposed solution can improve fronthaul reliability while latency remains below a strict latency bound required by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for this functional split.

The Broadcast Approach in Communication Networks

In this paper we review the theoretical and practical principles of the broadcast approach to communication over state-dependent channels and networks in which the transmitters have access to only the probabilistic description of the time-varying states while remaining oblivious to their instantaneous realizations. When the temporal variations are frequent enough, an effective long-term strategy is adapting the transmission strategies to the system’s ergodic behavior. However, when the variations are infrequent, their temporal average can deviate significantly from the channel’s ergodic mode, rendering a lack of instantaneous performance guarantees. To circumvent a lack of short-term guarantees, the broadcast approach provides principles for designing transmission schemes that benefit from both short- and long-term performance guarantees. This paper provides an overview of how to apply the broadcast approach to various channels and network models under various operational constraints.

Layered Inter-Cluster Cooperation Scheme for Backhaul-Constrained C-RAN Uplink Systems in the Presence of Inter-Cluster Interference

Despite the potential benefits of reducing system costs and improving spectral efficiency, it is challenging to implement cloud radio access network (C-RAN) systems due to the performance degradation caused by finite-capacity fronthaul links and inter-cluster interference signals. This work studies inter-cluster cooperative reception for the uplink of a two-cluster C-RAN system, where two nearby clusters interfere with each other on the uplink access channel. The radio units (RUs) of two clusters forward quantized and compressed version of the uplink received signals to the serving baseband processing units (BBUs) via finite-capacity fronthaul links. The BBUs of the clusters exchange the received fronthaul signals via finite-capacity backhaul links with the purpose of mitigating inter-cluster interference signals. Optimization of conventional cooperation scheme, in which each RU produces a single quantized signal, requires an exhaustive discrete search of exponentially increasing search size with respect to the number of RUs. To resolve this issue, we propose an improved inter-BBU, or inter-cluster, cooperation strategy based on layered compression, where each RU produces two descriptions, of which only one description is forwarded to the neighboring BBU on the backhaul links. We discuss the optimization of the proposed inter-cluster cooperation scheme, and validate the performance gains of the proposed scheme via numerical results.

Energy-Efficient Joint Design of Fronthaul and Edge Links for Cache-Aided C-RAN Systems with Wireless Fronthaul

This work addresses the joint design of fronthaul and edge links for a cache-aided cloud radio access network (C-RAN) system with a wireless fronthaul link. Motivated by the fact that existing techniques, such as C-RAN and edge caching, come at the cost of increased energy consumption, an energy efficiency (EE) metric is defined and adopted as the performance metric for optimization. As the fronthaul links can be used to transfer quantized and precoded baseband signals or hard information of uncached files, both soft- and hard-transfer fronthauling strategies are considered. Extensive numerical results validate the impact of edge caching, as well as the advantages of the energy-efficient design over the spectrally-efficient scheme. Additionally, the two fronthauling strategies—the soft- and hard-transfer schemes—are compared in terms of EE.
