Academic resilience and academic performance of university students: the mediating role of teacher support

Introduction

Student dropout and academic failure are serious problems faced by universities around the world. The academic development of university students is the joint result of external (teacher support) and internal factors (resilience). The goal of this study is an in-depth understanding of the association between university Students' academic resilience and academic performance.

Methods

All respondents were from a local Chinese public university. Two self-report scales with adequate reliability and validity were completed by 440 undergraduate students: the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Perceived Teacher Support Scale (PTSS).

Results

The results of this study demonstrated that academic resilience and teacher support were positively and closely correlated with the academic performance of university students. Teacher support plays a mediating role in the nexus between academic resilience and academic performance.

Discussion

The findings of this study shed light on the improvement of university students' academic performance and reducing the dropout rate from theoretically and practically. The study helps identify the key factors that contribute to students' academic success and improve their well-being. The results also provide evidence for university directors to design effective programs and take initiatives to increase retention rates and improve university students' success.

Social relations and scholastic achievement: Insights from engineering students through a mixed method study

The study was conducted on engineering students pursuing a B.Tech. in Civil and Mechanical engineering. The study involves a Mixed Method Design. A stratified sampling technique was used to collect the data from the sample subjects (Students), and for the qualitative part, thirty (30) teachers were purposively selected. The sample from Civil engineering students consists of 167 students, and 107 Mechanical engineering students selected randomly. The study compares the two groups in terms of Social Relations and Scholastic Achievement. The impact of Social Relations of students on their Scholastic Achievement was also studied. The opinions were pooled from the Teachers. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted, including Mean, Standard Deviation, t-tests, Effect size (Cohen's d), linear regression and Thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Civil engineering students have higher Social Relations and better Scholastic Achievement than their Mechanical counterparts. Further, our results emphasize the significance of good social relationships in predicting the scholastic achievement of students. Therefore, the findings suggest that encouraging surroundings that promote healthy social interactions and connections among engineering students and their teachers and classmates ought to be a top priority for educators and other stakeholders.

Emotional Intelligence, Academic Motivation, and Achievement among Health Science Students in Saudi Arabia: A Self-Deterministic Approach

PURPOSE

This study used a self-deterministic approach to explore the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), academic motivation (AM), and achievement among health science students.

METHODS

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in three cities of Saudi Arabia (Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah). A convenience sample of 450 students was incorporated using the multistage cluster sampling technique. The online survey contained three sections: students' basic data and academic achievement level, the modified Schutte self-report inventory, and the Academic Motivation Scale lowercase.

RESULTS

This study revealed moderate overall scores for EI (57.1%), AM (55.6%), and grade point average (GPA) (57.6%). The overall EI score, its domains, and GPA had significant positive correlations with overall AM and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation (p < .01). Amotivation had an insignificant correlation with GPA (p < .05), but it was negatively correlated with EI and its domains (p < .01). Multiple regression analysis proved that EI domains predicted 5.0% of GPA variance; emotions appraisal and expression (β = .02, p = .024), regulation (β = .11, p = .032), and utilization (β = .24, p < .01). EI domains also predicted 26.0% of AM variance; emotions appraisal and expression (β = .11, p = .04), regulation (β = .33, p < .01), and utilization (β = .23, p <.01). Moreover, AM predicted 4.0% of the variance in GPA; intrinsic (β = .25, p = .004) and extrinsic (β = .11, p = .022) motivation. AM also predicted 25.0% of the variance in EI: intrinsic (β = .34, p < .01) and extrinsic motivation (β = .26, p = .026).

CONCLUSION

EI and AM have a bidirectional influence on each other, significantly shaping the GPA of health sciences students in Saudi Arabia, where intrinsic motivation has a predominant role. Thus, promoting students' AM and EI is recommended to foster their academic achievement.

Cognitive Styles, Gender, and Student Academic Performance in Engineering Education

Cognitive styles affect the learning process positively if tasks are matched to the cognitive style of learners. This effect becomes more pronounced in complex education, such as in engineering. We attempted to critically assess the effect of cognitive styles and gender on students’ academic performance in eight engineering majors to understand whether a cognitive style preference is associated with certain majors. We used the Cognitive Style Indicator (CoSI) with a sample of n = 584 engineering students. Multiple standard statistical tests, regression tree analysis, and cluster analysis showed that none of the three cognitive styles was exclusively associated with better performance. However, students who had a stronger preference for a cognitive style were more likely to perform better. Gender, the major, and students’ clarity about their cognitive style were shown to be the best predictors of academic performance. Female students performed better and were clearer about their preferred cognitive style, whereas male students were more capable of adapting to different learning tasks. Furthermore, certain engineering majors were shown to be associated with certain cognitive styles. We concluded the study with theoretical and practical implications for engineering education and suggestions for further research.
