Mechanical Behaviors of Granite after Thermal Shock with Different Cooling Rates

Experimental investigation on the macro- and micromechanical properties of water-cooled granite at different high temperatures

To investigate the damage mechanisms in granite's physical and mechanical properties after high-temperature water quenching, this study employed MTS815.04 for uniaxial compression tests on thermally treated specimens, with concurrent acoustic emission monitoring, and utilized nanoindentation for micromechanical analysis. The results show that with increasing temperature, granite's peak strength and elastic modulus decrease, with a sharp decline after 400-500 °C, corresponding to a significant increase in the internal damage, which can be detected by acoustic emission monitoring. Below 500 °C, macroscopic mechanical degradation is due to mineral thermophysical property differences, while above 500 °C, microcrack development is the main deterioration factor. The failure mode shifts from tensile to tensile-shear complex to shear failure, with transition points at 400 °C and 800 °C. The results of this study are of certain reference value for improving the efficiency of extracting thermal energy from dry-hot rocks and providing security guidance for the tunnel restoration process following fire damage.

Mechanical Properties of Metasandstone under Uniaxial Graded Cyclic Loading and Unloading

The acoustic emission and wave velocity characteristics of metasandstone under graded cyclic loading and unloading were revealed by conducting graded cyclic loading and unloading tests. The results show that the acoustic emission signals of metasandstone samples are mainly generated in the loading phase, and almost no acoustic emission activity is generated in the unloading phase. The quiet period feature can be used to monitor and predict the destabilization of metasandstone. There is a stress threshold for wave velocity variation in metasandstone, below which wave velocity does not change significantly with increasing stress. When the stress exceeds this threshold, the wave velocity of the rock sample will decrease rapidly with the increase in stress. The phenomenon of a rapid decrease in wave velocity can be used to predict the damage instability of rock masses in engineering.

Effects of Strain Rate and Temperature on Physical Mechanical Properties and Energy Dissipation Features of Granite

Dynamic compression tests of granite after thermal shock were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar system, to determine the effects of strain rate and temperature on the dynamic mechanical parameters, energy dissipation features and failure modes of granite. The results indicate that the dynamic compressive strength increased exponentially with strain rate and decreased with increasing temperature. Temperature and incident energy can equivalently transform for the same dynamic compressive strength. Dynamic elastic modulus of granite decreased obviously with increasing temperature but did not have a clear correlation with strain rate. As the impact gas pressure increased, the stress-strain curves changed from Class II to Class I behavior, and the failure modes of specimens transformed from slightly split to completely pulverized. The critical temperature at which the stress-strain curves changed from Class II to Class I was determined to be 300 °C, when the impact gas pressure is 0.6 MPa. As the applied temperature increased, density, wave velocity and wave impedance all decreased, meanwhile, the degree of granite specimen crushing was aggravated. Under the same incident energy, as the temperature increased, the reflected energy increased notably and the absorbed energy increased slightly, but the transmitted energy decreased. For the same temperature, the reflected and absorbed energies increased linearly as the incident energy increased, whereas the transmitted energy increased logarithmically. The SEM images of the thermal crack distribution on the granite specimen surface at different temperatures can well explain the essence of mechanical parameters deterioration of granite after thermal shock. This work can provide guidance for impact crushing design of high temperature rocks during excavations.

Experimental Investigation of the Dynamic Tensile Properties of Naturally Saturated Rocks Using the Coupled Static–Dynamic Flattened Brazilian Disc Method

In a naturally saturated state, rocks are likely to be in a stress field simultaneously containing static and dynamic loads. Since rocks are more vulnerable to tensile loads, it is significant to characterize the tensile properties of naturally saturated rocks under coupled static–dynamic loads. In this study, dynamic flattened Brazilian disc (FBD) tensile tests were conducted on naturally saturated sandstone under static pre-tension using a modified split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device. Combining high-speed photographs with digital image correlation (DIC) technology, we can observe the variation of strain applied to specimens’ surfaces, including the central crack initiation. The experimental results indicate that the dynamic tensile strength of naturally saturated specimens increases with an increase in loading rate, but with the pre-tension increases, the dynamic strength at a certain loading rate decreases accordingly. Moreover, the dynamic strength of naturally saturated sandstone is found to be lower than that of natural sandstone. The fracture behavior of naturally saturated and natural specimens is similar, and both exhibit obvious tensile cracks. The comprehensive micromechanism of water effects concerning the dynamic tensile behavior of rocks with static preload can be explained by the weakening effects of water on mechanical properties, the water wedging effect, and the Stefan effect.
