Fluorescent and Colorimetric Dual-Mode Strategy Based on Rhodamine 6G Hydrazide for Qualitative and Quantitative Detection of Hg(2+) in Seafoods

A colorimetric and fluorescent probe of lignocellulose nanofiber composite modified with Rhodamine 6G derivative for reversible, selective and sensitive detection of metal ions in wastewater

Heavy metal ions have extremely high toxicity. As the top of food chain, human beings certainly will accumulate them by ingesting food and participating other activities, which eventually result in the damage to our health. Therefore, it is very meaningful and necessary to design a simple, portable, stable and efficient material for heavy metal ions detection. Based on the spirolactam Rhodamine 6G (SRh6G) fluorescent probe, we prepared two types of nanocomposite materials (membrane and aerogel) by vacuum filtration and freeze-drying methods with lignocellulose nanofiber (CNF) as a carrier, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linkers. Then the microstructure, chemical composition, wetting property, fluorescence intensity and selectivity of as-prepared SRh6G/PVA/CNF would be characterized and analyzed. Results showed that SRh6G/PVA/CNF nanocomposites would turn red in color under strong acidic environment and produced orange fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Besides, they were also to detect Al3+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Fe3+ and Ag+ through color and fluorescence variations. We had further tested its sensitivity, selectivity, adsorption, fluorescence limits of detection (LOD) to Fe3+ and Cu2+. The test towards real water samples (hospital wastewater, Songhua River and tap water) proved that SRh6G/PVA/CNF nanocomposites could detect the polluted water with low concentrations of Fe3+ and Cu2+. In addition, SRh6G/PVA/CNF nanocomposites have excellent mechanical property, repeatability, superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, which may offer a theoretical reference for the assembly strategy and detection application of cellulose-based fluorescent probe.

Recent Advances in Design and Application of Nanomaterials-Based Colorimetric Biosensors for Agri-food Safety Analysis

A colorimetric sensor detects an analyte by utilizing the optical properties of the sensor unit, such as absorption or reflection, to generate a structural color that serves as the output signal to detect an analyte. Detecting the refractive index of an analyte by recording the color change of the sensor structure on its surface has several advantages, including simple operation, low cost, suitability for onsite analysis, and real-time detection. Colorimetric sensors have drawn much attention owing to their rapidity, simplicity, high sensitivity and selectivity. This Review discusses the use of colorimetric sensors in the food industry, including their applications for detecting food contaminants. The Review also provides insight into the scope of future research in this area.

Red-Emitting AIEE-Active Rhodamine-Based Ionic Liquid for the Ultrasensitive and Selective Detection of Mercury Ions

A highly fluorescent, red-emitting rhodamine-based imidazolium ionic liquid (RhB-IL) was synthesized, and its structure was extensively verified using various spectroscopic techniques. The novel molecule showed exceptional selectivity toward Hg2+ ions over other competitive metal ions. Additionally, inspired by the solution results, a paper-based device was fabricated by embedding RhB-IL on paper strips and tested for the on-site detection of Hg2+ ions using a portable UV light source. Significantly, the device displayed excellent PL sensing behavior toward Hg2+ with a detection limit of 0.21 nM. In addition, RhB-IL showed the phenomena of aggregation-induced enhanced emission. In fact, when compared to the pure THF solution of RhB-IL, a remarkable 7.7-fold increase in PL intensity was seen for the 90% water fraction. Evidently, this is the first report of a paper-based Hg2+ detection system that uses a red fluorescent ionic liquid.

A fluorescent probe based on an enhanced ICT effect for Hg2+ detection and cell imaging

The mercury ion (Hg²⁺) has hindered society to some extent due to its high biological toxicity, and a rapid method for Hg²⁺ detection is urgently needed. In the present work, two fluorescent probes, YF-Hg and YF-Cl-Hg, were developed. YF-Cl-Hg was produced by introducing an electron-withdrawing substituent (-Cl) into the structure of YF-Hg. The probe YF-Cl-Hg possesses a larger Stokes shift and a more pronounced UV-vis absorption redshift compared to YF-Hg in a pH = 7.4 environment. The reasons for the superior spectral performance of YF-Cl-Hg over YF-Hg were explored by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the good biocompatibility suggests that YF-Cl-Hg possesses the potential to be a tool for Hg²⁺ detection in cells.
