Association between Obesity and Anemia in a Nationally Representative Sample of South Korean Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study

Prevalence of Overweight/Obesity Associated With Anemia Among Female Medical Students at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction The obesity epidemic has been linked to a wide range of health and nutritional problems, including anemia, which is often caused by impaired iron metabolism. The World Health Organization considers anemia and obesity to be global health issues among adolescent girls and women experiencing menstruation. This study aims to examine the association between iron deficiency anemia and obesity/overweight among female medical students. Methodology This cross-sectional descriptive study conducted as an online self-administered questionnaire. Furthermore, blood samples were collected from 206 students to evaluate the complete blood count, iron and lipid profile. Results The convenience sampling technique was used and a total of 206 students were enrolled in the study. The average body mass index (BMI) was 22.51 ± 3.25, with 83.5% (n = 172) falling within the normal weight range, 12.6% (n = 26) as overweight, and 3.9% (n = 8) as obese. Anemia was present in 16.0% (n = 33) of the participants overall. Higher prevalence of anemia was observed among overweight participants with 10 out of 26 (38.5%) subjects compared to obese with two out of eight (25.0%) and normal weight 21 out of 172 (12.2%); this difference was highly significant (P = 0.005). Individuals with anemia exhibited a significant association with those experiencing a diet full of unhealthy fats and carbohydrates (P = 0.05) and a diet containing all essential nutrients (P = 0.01). There is no statistically significant correlation between anemia prevalence and participants' response to the presence of signs of anemia, physical activity or other dietary habits. Obese participants had a significantly higher mean value of triglycerides (129.5 ± 20.5) compared to normal weight and overweight participants (74.5 ± 12.02 and 51.2 ± 15.04), respectively (P = 0.001). Conclusion A dependable assembly exists between obesity and overweight in cases of iron deficient anemia. The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia was substantially higher among overweight/obese females, highlighting that overweight/obesity signifies both quantitative and qualitative malnutrition. A high BMI was associated with elevated triglycerides, typically considered indicators of obesity. This association may suggest compromised iron homeostasis.

Nutritional Modulation of Hepcidin in the Treatment of Various Anemic States

Twenty years after its discovery, hepcidin is still considered the main regulator of iron homeostasis in humans. The increase in hepcidin expression drastically blocks the flow of iron, which can come from one's diet, from iron stores, and from erythrophagocytosis. Many anemic conditions are caused by non-physiologic increases in hepcidin. The sequestration of iron in the intestine and in other tissues poses worrying premises in view of discoveries about the mechanisms of ferroptosis. The nutritional treatment of these anemic states cannot ignore the nutritional modulation of hepcidin, in addition to the bioavailability of iron. This work aims to describe and summarize the few findings about the role of hepcidin in anemic diseases and ferroptosis, as well as the modulation of hepcidin levels by diet and nutrients.

Excess adiposity and iron-deficient status in Colombian women of reproductive age

OBJECTIVE

Information about excess adiposity markers different from BMI and iron status is limited and more so about the shape of these associations. This study evaluated the relationship between three adiposity markers and iron-deficient status in reproductive-age women.

METHODS

Cross-sectional analysis in 6357 non-pregnant women from the Colombian nutritional health survey (ENSIN) 2010. Exposures were the following: waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (W-HtR), BMI, and WC > 80 cm, W-HtR > 0.5, and BMI ≥ 25 and ≥30. Outcomes were the following: iron deficiency (ID) as serum ferritin <15 μg/L, ID as ferritin <30 μg/L, anemia, and continuous values of ferritin and hemoglobin. Logistic and linear regressions adjusted for sociodemographic/inflammation covariates were conducted.

RESULTS

All the adiposity markers, continuous or categorical, were inversely and significantly associated with both ID thresholds in fully adjusted models (p < 0.05). W-HtR reported stronger effect estimates for ID (odds ratios < 0.5) and for prediction of log-ferritin levels (fully adjusted β-coefficient [95% CI] 0.61 [0.39-0.82], p < 0.01) and was also inversely associated with anemia (p < 0.05). In cubic splines analyses, W-HtR, WC, and BMI were linearly associated with ID from values closer to international thresholds of general or central obesity, and the patterns of WC and BMI tended toward flatness. A significant decline in the likelihood of anemia was steeper by increasing W-HtR than by increasing BMI. After exclusion of women with C reactive protein >  5 mg/L or adjustment for C reactive protein, adiposity markers remained significantly related to ferritin levels and W-HtR with anemia.

CONCLUSIONS

Women with higher adiposity were less likely to have an iron-deficient status. W-HtR was the strongest and most consistently associated marker. Inflammation would not be involved in the associations found.
