Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association between QoL, self-assessed physical activity, and the presence and severity of muscle spasms in chronic hemodialysis patients. Patients undergoing regular in-center hemodialysis (HD) have much lower quality of life (QoL) than healthy individuals. However, there is limited knowledge about the impact of specific common complications of hemodialysis, particularly muscle spasms on the overall well-being of patients. Materials and Methods: In this prospective, single-center study, 67 chronic HD patients were surveyed regarding the prevalence of muscle spasms using a validated 9-multiple-choice-question survey, alongside the Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and The Short Form (36) Health Survey (SF-36). Based on the muscle spasms survey answers, patients were divided into two subgroups: with (n = 39) and without muscle spasms (n = 28). Results: The findings revealed that patients with muscle spasms had a higher body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.005), a shorter dialysis vintage (p = 0.063), and significantly longer sitting times (p = 0.017). Multivariate analysis identified BMI (p = 0.034), sitting time (p = 0.009), physical functioning scores (p = 0.032), and dialysis vintage (p = 0.040) as significant predictors of muscle spasms. Conclusions: This study concluded that muscle spasms are associated with lower QoL among HD patients. The contributing factors to this dependance are BMI, dialysis vintage, physical functioning, and sitting time.

Abstract
As the global population of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis continues to grow, more than half are experiencing the psychological distress associated with learned helplessness, a condition potentially linked to adverse outcomes such as depression and suicidal ideation. However, the triggers contributing to learned helplessness in these patients remain poorly understood. This study employs an interpretative phenomenological approach to explore the experiences and triggers of learned helplessness among 26 maintenance hemodialysis patients across five hospitals in China. The analysis of participants' narratives reveals that learned helplessness in these patients is influenced by a combination of physiological, psychological, and social factors. Physical discomfort and psychological changes contribute to their sense of helplessness. Despite seeking support from family and healthcare providers, their distress often goes unnoticed. Additionally, the social stigma of being perceived as a "special group" further exacerbates their learned helplessness. Based on the findings, the following recommendations are provided to effectively mitigate learned helplessness: Healthcare professionals must reduce symptom burden, provide psychological assessment and support, and assist in rebuilding positive patient cognition. It is also crucial to enhance connections between patients, their families, and social support groups, reduce misunderstandings and stigmatization, and strengthen community support systems.

Abstract
Background Living with peritoneal dialysis affects the patient's life. The experiences of peritoneal dialysis patients, especially Muslim patients, are incomprehensible. There is a need to explore this area further to foster nursing practice improvement through enhanced understanding. Objective The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of Muslim patients who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Methods A qualitative descriptive design was employed to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Muslim patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis in a peritoneal dialysis unit in Southern Thailand. Participants were initially recruited through purposive sampling and then selected based on the inclusion criteria. Data saturation was reached from October 2019 to January 2020. Ten Muslim patients who had been receiving peritoneal dialysis for a minimum of one month participated in personalized, in-depth, face-to-face interviews, which were supplemented by field notes. Inductive content analysis was performed using open coding, categories, and abstractions. Results The experiences of Muslim patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis were grouped into two main categories: 1) Overwhelmed by change and 2) Learned to survive. Conclusion Peritoneal dialysis has a significant impact on Muslim patients, especially during the first months of treatment. Recognizing religious teachings and strengthening religious commitment through participation in religious practices are central to living on peritoneal dialysis. The findings offer a more profound insight into the experiences of Muslim patients receiving peritoneal dialysis. These results can be foundational knowledge for establishing and improving culturally appropriate nursing practices for Muslim patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding the trend of utilization of renal dialysis in Saudi Arabia (SA) is fundamental as it provides a general overview of renal care. The practice of renal dialysis assists in identifying challenges, opportunities, and potential areas for improvement in the provision of the services. OBJECTIVES This research investigated the utilization of renal dialysis services in SA by exploring the number of renal dialysis centers, hemodialysis machines (HD), and peritoneodialysis patients. METHODS The dataset for this study was derived from a collaboration between the General Authority of Statistics (GaStat) and the Ministry of Health (MoH), focusing on indicators for renal dialysis centers and patients across health sectors in 2021. Analysis was conducted using MS Excel 365 and IBM SPSS Version 29, incorporating multiple regression techniques. The health sector was treated as the dependent variable. At the same time, the number of hemodialysis (HD) machines and the counts of HD and peritoneal dialysis patients were considered independent variables. RESULTS Around 275 renal dialysis centers, over 8000 HD machines, 20,440 HD patients, and 1,861 peritoneal patients were tallied from two resources. The findings revealed a negative relationship between the health sector and several renal dialysis centers and peritoneodialysis patients, as demonstrated by p < 0.05 in multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSION The number of renal dialysis centers influences the availability of HD machines, affecting the number of HD and peritoneodialysis patients. Most national patients preferred MoH over other semi-governmental and private sectors, and vice versa for non-Saudis.

Abstract
Hemodialysis is a conservative treatment for end-stage renal disease. It has various complications which negatively affect quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to examine the relationship between fatigue, pruritus, and thirst distress (TD) with QOL of patients receiving hemodialysis, while also considering the mediating role of treatment adherence (TA). This cross-sectional study was carried out in 2023 on 411 patients receiving hemodialysis. Participants were consecutively recruited from several dialysis centers in Iran. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Fatigue Assessment Scale, the Thirst Distress Scale, the Pruritus Severity Scale, the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey, and the modified version of the Greek Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire for Hemodialysis Patients. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used for data analysis. The structural model and hypothesis testing results showed that all hypotheses were supported in this study. QOL had a significant inverse association with fatigue, pruritus, and TD and a significant positive association with TA. TA partially mediated the association of QOL with fatigue, pruritus, and TD, denoting that it helped counteract the negative association of these complications on QOL. This model explained 68.5% of the total variance of QOL. Fatigue, pruritus, and TD have a negative association with QOL among patients receiving hemodialysis, while TA reduces these negative associations. Therefore, TA is greatly important to manage the associations of these complications and improve patient outcomes. Healthcare providers need to assign high priority to TA improvement among these patients to reduce their fatigue, pruritus, and TD and improve their QOL. Further studies are necessary to determine the most effective strategies for improving TA and reducing the burden of complications in this patient population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-management behaviours are critical for patients requiring regular hemodialysis (HD) therapy. This study aimed to test the relationship between social support, uncertainty and self-management among HD patients and to explore whether hope plays a mediating role. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of 212 HD patients from two hospitals completed the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Herth Hope Index (HHI), Short form Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (SF-MUIS), and hemodialysis Self-Management Instrument (HD-SMI). Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. RESULTS The main finding indicated that social support positively affected self-management (β = 0.50, t = 4.97, p < 0.001), and uncertainty negatively affected self-management (β =-0.37, t=-4.12, p = < 0.001). In mediational model analysis, the effect of social support on self-management was fully mediated [(β = 0.12; 95% BC CI (0.047, 0.228)] by hope. Also, the effect of uncertainty on self-management was fully mediated [(β=- 0.014; 95% BC CI (-0.114, -0.003)] by hope. CONCLUSIONS "Considering factors influencing self-management in HD patients is crucial for improving quality of life. Receiving support and informational resources can not only foster hope but also reduce their uncertainty, thus aiding in enhancing clinical outcomes, quality of life, and reducing complications. "Health care providers, especially nurses were advised to accept the existence of uncertainty, help patients make optimal use of support resources, and give more importance to disambiguation to reassure them. Therefore, well-designed interventions that enhance social support and hope and reduce uncertainty may help improve self-management behaviour in HD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the psychological status of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients who were blocked during the 2022 Omic Pandemic in Shanghai. METHODS This was an observational and cross-sectional study. We selected 172 PD patients from the peritoneal dialysis center of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, during the quarantine of the Omicron pandemic in Shanghai from April to May 2022. General data and biochemical indices were collected. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life (SF-36) questionnaire was used to evaluate the psychological state of the patients during the quarantine. RESULTS According to the assessment of the SF-36 scale, the physiological and psychological health status of PD patients was better than that before quarantine (P < 0.05). According to the comparison of biochemical indices, the high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) levels were lower in patients after quarantine than before quarantine, while the blood phosphorus, blood calcium and haemoglobin levels were greater after quarantine (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that health changes were positively correlated with age of penetration (years) (OR = 1.031, 95% CI = 1.005-1.058); however, physiological function was negatively correlated with sex (OR = 0.198, 95% CI = 0.044-0.899). Energy was significantly positively correlated with closed-loop time (OR = 1.063, 95% CI = 1.001-1.128) (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in biochemical indices or quality of life between APD patients and non-APD patients (P > 0.05). According to the results of the abstract independent sample T test, when comparing the various dimensions of the SF-36 scale, for the dimensions of physiological function, pain and energy, the PD patients were better than the HD patients were (P < 0.05). Similarly, for the dimension of physiological function, the HD patients were better than the PD patients were (P < 0.05). During the quarantine period from April to May in Shanghai, the infection rate of PD patients was lower than usual (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS During the Omicron pandemic in Shanghai in 2022, PD patients exhibited relatively stable psychological and physiological states and a low infection rate. Compared with HD patients, PD patients had better adaptability. Especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, peritoneal dialysis has more advantages.
