Monolayer-directed assembly and magnetic properties of FePt nanoparticles on patterned aluminum oxide

Metal-containing organic compounds for memory and data storage applications

With the upcoming trend of Big Data era, some new types of memory technologies have emerged as substitutes for the traditional Si-based semiconductor memory devices, which are encountering severe scaling down technical obstacles. In particular, the resistance random access memory (RRAM) and magnetic random access memory (MRAM) hold great promise for the in-memory computing, which are regarded as the optimal strategy and pathway to solve the von Neumann bottleneck by high-throughput in situ data processing. As far as the active materials in RRAM and MRAM are concerned, organic semiconducting materials have shown increasing application perspectives in memory devices due to their rich structural diversity and solution processability. With the introduction of metal elements into the backbone of molecules, some new properties and phenomena will emerge accordingly. Consequently, the RRAM and MRAM devices based on metal-containing organic compounds (including the small molecular metal complexes, metallopolymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and organic-inorganic-hybrid perovskites (OIHPs)) have been widely explored and attracted intense attention. In this review, we highlight the fundamentals of RRAM and MRAM, as well as the research progress of the applications of metal-containing organic compounds in both RRAM and MRAM. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future directions for the research of organic RRAM and MRAM.

Biocompatible Magnetic Micro- and Nanodevices: Fabrication of FePt Nanopropellers and Cell Transfection

The application of nanoparticles for drug or gene delivery promises benefits in the form of single-cell-specific therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities. Many methods of cell transfection rely on unspecific means to increase the transport of genetic material into cells. Targeted transport is in principle possible with magnetically propelled micromotors, which allow responsive nanoscale actuation and delivery. However, many commonly used magnetic materials (e.g., Ni and Co) are not biocompatible, possess weak magnetic remanence (Fe₃ O₄ ), or cannot be implemented in nanofabrication schemes (NdFeB). Here, it is demonstrated that co-depositing iron (Fe) and platinum (Pt) followed by one single annealing step, without the need for solution processing, yields ferromagnetic FePt nanomotors that are noncytotoxic, biocompatible, and possess a remanence and magnetization that rival those of permanent NdFeB micromagnets. Active cell targeting and magnetic transfection of lung carcinoma cells are demonstrated using gradient-free rotating millitesla fields to drive the FePt nanopropellers. The carcinoma cells express enhanced green fluorescent protein after internalization and cell viability is unaffected by the presence of the FePt nanopropellers. The results establish FePt, prepared in the L1₀ phase, as a promising magnetic material for biomedical applications with superior magnetic performance, especially for micro- and nanodevices.

Nanoparticles selectively immobilized onto large arrays of gold micro and nanostructures through surface chemical functionalizations

Latex nanoparticles (100nm and 200nm diameter) were precisely located onto the gold regions of micro and nanopatterned gold/silica substrates through surface chemical functionalizations. The gold patterns were selectively functionalized with alkylthiols bearing biotin or amine headgroups. This selective functionalization allowed the trapping of streptavidin- or carboxy-functionalized latex nanoparticles onto the gold structures with very little non-specific adsorption onto the surrounding silica. Quantitative data of nanoparticle capture on gold and silica, obtained through SEM image analysis, showed a one to two order of magnitude increase on gold with a similar low coverage on silica (non-specific adsorption) thanks to chemical functionalizations. Single nanoparticles were captured at the gap of dimer gold nanostructures.

Structuration and integration of magnetic nanoparticles on surfaces and devices

Different experimental approaches used for structuration of magnetic nanoparticles on surfaces are reviewed. Nanoparticles tend to organize on surfaces through self-assembly mechanisms controlled by non-covalent interactions which are modulated by their shape, size and morphology as well as by other external parameters such as the nature of the solvent or the capping layer. Further control on the structuration can be achieved by the use of external magnetic fields or other structuring techniques, mainly lithographic or atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based techniques. Moreover, results can be improved by chemical functionalization or the use of biological templates. Chemical functionalization of the nanoparticles and/or the surface ensures a proper stability as well as control of the formation of a (sub)monolayer. On the other hand, the use of biological templates facilitates the structuration of several families of nanoparticles, which otherwise may be difficult to form, simply by establishing the experimental conditions required for the structuration of the organic capsule. All these experimental efforts are directed ultimately to the integration of magnetic nanoparticles in sensors which constitute the future generation of hybrid magnetic devices.

Electrochemical stability of self-assembled alkylphosphate monolayers on conducting metal oxides

Alkylphosphate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO(3) (Nb-STO) conducting metal oxide substrates. Unlike thiols on gold, the alkylphosphate SAMs on Nb-STO exhibited an electrochemical stability over a wide voltage range from -2 to 2 V. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the SAM modification inhibited the electrochemical activity of the underlying conducting substrate with an efficiency dependent on the chain length. Impedance spectroscopy showed that SAM-modified Nb-STO substrates have a significantly higher resistance than bare substrates.

Where bio meets nano: the many uses for nanoporous aluminum oxide in biotechnology

Porous aluminum oxide (PAO) is a ceramic formed by an anodization process of pure aluminum that enables the controllable assembly of exceptionally dense and regular nanopores in a planar membrane. As a consequence, PAO has a high porosity, nanopores with high aspect ratio, biocompatibility and the potential for high sensitivity imaging and diverse surface modifications. These properties have made this unusual material attractive to a disparate set of applications. This review examines how the structure and properties of PAO connect with its present and potential uses within research and biotechnology. The role of PAO is covered in areas including microbiology, mammalian cell culture, sensitive detection methods, microarrays and other molecular assays, and in creating new nanostructures with further uses within biology.
