Experimental Study on Shear Behavior of Rock Composite Material under Normal Unloading Conditions

As a composite material, the stability of rock mass is usually controlled by a joint. During the process of excavation, the normal stress of the joint decreases continuously, and then the shear strength of the joint decreases, which may eventually lead to the instability and failure of rock mass. Previous studies have mainly focused on the shear behavior of joints under constant normal stress, but have rarely considered the unloading of normal stress. In this paper, a direct shear test of joints with different roughness was carried out, in which the shear stress remained unchanged while the normal stress decreased. The strength characteristics of joints were explored, and the deformation and acoustic emission-counting characteristics of joints were analyzed by digital image correlation (DIC) techniques and acoustic emission (AE). A new method for predicting the instability of joints under normal unloading was proposed based on the evolution law of normal deformation energy (U_n), tangential deformation energy (U_s) and total deformation energy (U₀). The results show the following: (1) The unloading amount of normal stress was enlarged for greater initial normal stress and roughness, while it decreased with an increase in initial shear stress. (2) AE events reached their maximum when the normal stress was equal to the failure normal stress, and the b-value fluctuated more frequently in stable development periods under normal unloading conditions. (3) U₀ would change with the loading and unloading of stress, and this may be used to predict the unloading instability of rock mass using the abrupt change of U₀.

Can Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Be Used as a Biomarker of Thermal Comfort for Mine Workers?

This study aimed to determine whether heart rate variability (HRV) can express the thermal comfort of mine workers. Eight subjects ran on a treadmill (5.5 km/h) to simulate heavy labor in three kinds of mining environments (22 °C/90%, 26 °C/90%, 30 °C/90%), respectively. Based on the measured electrocardiogram (ECG) data, the HRV of the subjects was calculated. The results showed that the HRV indices changed obviously under different temperature environments. In the neutral and hot environment, except for the LF, TP and LF/HF, there were significant differences in each index. However, there was no significant difference between the cold and neutral environments. The R-R intervals, the very low-frequency power (VLF), pNN20 and SampEN had strong negative correlation with the thermal sensation of people from sitting to work (ρ < −0.700). These indices may be used as thermal comfort predictive biomarkers of mine workers.

Numerical Analysis on the Thermal Performance in an Excavating Roadway with Auxiliary Ventilation System

A steady and proper thermal environment in deep underground is imperative to ensure worker health and production safety. Understanding the thermal performance in the roadway is the premise of temperature prediction; ventilation design; and improvement in cooling efficiency. A full coupled model incorporated with a moving mesh method was adopted; reflecting the dynamic condition of roadway construction. This study revealed the characteristics of the thermal performance and its evolution law in an excavating roadway. Several scenarios were performed to examine the designs of the auxiliary ventilation system on thermal performance in the roadway. The results show that there is a limitation in the cooling effect by continuously increasing the ventilation volume. Reducing the diameter of the air duct or distances between the duct outlet and the working face will aggravate the heat hazard in the roadway. The heat release from the roadway wall increases with the increase of the advance rate of the working face or roadway section size. Furthermore; an orthogonal experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of major factors on the average air temperature and local heat accumulation in the roadway.
