The Importance of Community Perspectives on Hotel Community-Related CSR: A Position Paper

The purpose of this position paper is to present an opinion on the importance of understanding host community perspectives in any community-based corporate social responsibility initiative. A host community is essentially the consumer of any community-based CSR, yet they each have unique cultures, features, needs, and expectations, which may or may not fit a business’s CSR initiative, unless the community perspectives are accounted for prior to the implementation of the CSR project. Focusing on the hotel sector context, the paper develops its position by reviewing supporting literature and highlighting the outcomes of a qualitative case study that involved face-to face semistructured interviews with 15 local opinion leaders who represented several local communities. The paper concludes with a firmer opinion on its position, and it offers some of the implications of its findings.

Common and Unique Barriers to the Exchange of Administrative Healthcare Data in Environmental Public Health Tracking Program

CDC’s National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program (Tracking Program) receives administrative data annually from 25–30 states to track potential environmental exposures and to make data available for public access. In 2019, the CDC Tracking Program conducted a cross-sectional survey among principal investigators or program managers of the 26 funded programs to improve access to timely, accurate, and local data. All 26 funding recipients reported having access to hospital inpatient data, and most states (69.2%) regularly update data user agreements to receive the data. Among the respondents, 15 receive record-level data with protected health information (PHI) and seven receive record-level data without PHI. Regarding geospatial resolution, approximately 50.0% of recipients have access to the street address or census tract information, 34.6% have access to ZIP code, and 11.5% have other sub-county geographies (e.g., town). Only three states receive administrative data for their residents from all border states. The survey results will help the Tracking Program to identify knowledge gaps and perceived barriers to the use and accessibility of administrative data for the CDC Tracking Program. The information collected will inform the development of resources that can provide solutions for more efficient and timely data exchange.

Social Relations, Community Engagement and Potentials: A Qualitative Study Exploring Resident Engagement in a Community-Based Health Promotion Intervention in a Deprived Social Housing Area

Emerging evidence points towards a lower quality of life, fragile social relations and suboptimal health behavior and status of residents living in social housing areas characterized by ethnic diversity and socioeconomic deprivation. Community-based health promotion interventions developed in collaboration with the target group and adjusted to the local context can affect the acceptance of and engagement in such interventions. However, few studies have investigated the potential of community-based interventions in deprived social housing areas. This study explores residents’ perspectives on engagement in a community-based health promotion intervention focusing on enhancing social relations. The study builds on qualitative methods including participant observations combined with pre- and post-intervention interviews with a selected group of residents (n = 9). Data were thematically analyzed with focuses on participation in an everyday life context, concepts of othering, and territorial stigmatization. Engagement in the intervention was motivated by the need to establish and enhance social relations, and to explore the world outside the housing area. However, barriers including cultural and language differences among residents, and competing contextual factors, challenged engagement. We conclude that participatory community-based interventions have a potential to enhance social relations in deprived social housing areas. However, adequate support and efforts to overcome the identified barriers are needed.
