Abstract
Background/Objectives The relation between TMD and posterior tooth loss is still up for debate and is a topic of constant discussion. The present study aimed to find a correlation between posterior teeth loss and TMJ disorder symptoms in adult patients. Methods A total of fifty patients were selected for the study. First, intra-oral dental examination recorded all missing posterior teeth, the teeth numbers, type of missing teeth (except third molars). All existing teeth are examined during the clinical examination to identify any odontogenic causes for pain if present. Second, patients were asked to fill in the Arabic-translated form of the DC/TMD Axis I symptom questionnaire. Third, the DC/TMD Axis II protocol was applied to each patient and the examination form was completed by the examiner during the clinical examination. Results Disc displacement with reduction is more likely to cause headache, pain, and clicking. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between age and the number of missing teeth. Furthermore, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between age and maximum unassisted mouth opening, and the number of missing teeth and maximum unassisted mouth opening. Logistics regression analysis showed clicking was significantly associated and 13.8 (OR) times more likely to have TMD. Conclusions The current study reported that patients with TMD are more likely to have pain, headache, clicking, and a decrease in maximum mouth opening. There was a correlation between clicking and TMJ disorder, and the number of tooth loss and TMJ disorder.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and muscles that control mandibular movement. In most cases, the etiology is unclear and is considered multifactorial. Recent research suggests that some forms of TMD could be associated with specific TMJ morphological characteristics. This study aims to provide a review of the reported anatomical and degenerative morphological condylar characteristics of subjects with a clinical diagnosis of TMD as described with the use of CBCT imaging, as well as the detection of potential predisposing anatomical factors. This review was developed and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR Checklist. A comprehensive search was performed in five databases. Reports were screened by two independent reviewers based on preselected inclusion and exclusion criteria. 45 studies were included in this review. The most frequently reported degenerative changes associated with TMD were condylar surface erosion, flattening, osteophytes, and sclerosis. Anatomical characteristics included a small condylar size and a posterior position of the condylar head in the TMJ. The anterosuperior area of the condylar head appears to be the most frequently affected. More studies are required to determine potential specific predisposing anatomical characteristics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the biomechanical behavior and reveal the force transmission patterns of the human masticatory system through advanced three-dimensional finite element (FE) models. METHODS The FE model was constructed according to the medical images of a healthy male adult. It contains full skull structures, detailed temporomandibular joints (TMJs) with discs, complete dentitions, masticatory muscles, and related ligaments. Several static bite scenarios were simulated to demonstrate the effects of bite positions and muscle force recruitments on the force transmission patterns. RESULTS Molar occlusal surfaces are the primary force transmission region for clenching. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the stiffness of the bite substance would not alter the force transmission patterns but could affect the maximum contact stresses on the discs and the occlusal surfaces. During the unilateral clenching tasks, the high-stress region on the discal surfaces shifted ipsilaterally. The presence or absence of the molar cushions would significantly affect the biomechanical response of the masticatory system. SIGNIFICANCE FE analysis is an effective way of investigating biomechanical responses involving complicated interactions. Enriching the static analysis of the masticatory system with a detailed model can help understand better how the forces were transmitted and the significance of TMJs during the clenching process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the congruency of surface geometry of the articulating bones and morphologic differences in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structure, between patients with TMJ anterior dislocation and healthy controls. METHODS The study included 15 patients with TMJ anterior dislocation and 15 controls who underwent cone-beam computed tomography. The surface angle of the articular fossa (fossa-concavity) and condyle (condyle-convexity) and joint spaces were measured from both sagittal and coronal views. The articular eminence morphology and horizontal condyle position were also evaluated. RESULTS Coronal fossa angles were significantly lower in controls than in patients (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between coronal condyle and fossa angle values in controls and in patients' joints (p < 0.05), however, the fossa-condylar congruence was higher in controls than in patients. Superior joint space was significantly higher in controls than in patients (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in articular eminence measurements, mean condyle angle variables and condyle position between the patients and controls (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study which include lower joint congruency, higher fossa concavity and superior joint space distance in patients with anterior dislocation may be related to the inferior positioning of the condyle away from the fossa and potentially the elongation of the capsular ligament.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To predict temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDWR) from condylar shape, position, and dimensions obtained from CBCT images. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed on 17 patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders diagnosed by history taking according to the chart of the American Association of orthodontists, clinical examination according to the Helkimo index and MRI. CBCT and MRI examinations were performed within one-week interval. Disc position, diagnosed by MRI was used as the gold standard. TMJs with posterior disc displacement or anterior disc displacement without reduction were excluded. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed on CBCT images to find the correlation between condylar variables and ADDWR. A logistic regression model was created to estimate ADDWR from condylar dimensions (height, width and depth). RESULTS Condylar shape and condylar position in the glenoid fossa were significantly correlated with ADDWR (P < 0.05). Condylar width, height and depth were significantly smaller in condyles with ADDWR compared to condylar dimensions in normal disc position. Logistic regression analysis could be used to predict the probability of anterior disc displacement with reduction from condylar dimensions. CONCLUSION Condylar shape, position, and dimensions assessed by CBCT are significantly correlated with ADDWR of the TMJ. Substituting the values of condylar width, height and depth in the equation suggests the probability of ADDWR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the association between sagittal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc position of patients with anterior disc displacement evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and bone morphology of the TMJ evaluated by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS One hundred and seventy-eight TMJs of 97 patients were retrospectively analyzed. The TMJ disc position was evaluated using MRI and classified into four types: control group (without disc displacement), slight group (disc slightly anteriorly displaced), moderate group (disc moderately anteriorly displaced), and severe group (disc severely anteriorly displaced). The measurements of TMJ bone morphology among four groups were evaluated by CBCT through Mimics software including condyle linear dimensions (condyle length, width, and height), condylar volume and surface area, and the depth and length of the glenoid fossa, joint anterior space, joint superior space, and joint posterior space. The sagittal plane position of the condyle was also assessed. The differences in all the morphologic measurement parameters among the four groups were detected using the one-way analysis of variance or the Kruskal Wallis test, and Chi-square tests. The correlations between disc sagittal position and all the morphologic measurements were also analyzed. RESULTS There were significant differences in measurements of condyle linear dimensions, condylar volume and surface area, depth of the glenoid fossa, joint spaces, and distribution of the condyle sagittal positions among the four groups. By contrast, there were no statistical differences in terms of the length of the glenoid fossa among the four groups. Correlation analysis revealed that there is a statistically significant negative correlation among condyle linear dimensions, condylar volume and surface area, the depth of the glenoid fossa, joint superior space, and disc position. However, joint posterior space was positively correlated with disc position. CONCLUSIONS A statistically significant correlation was determined between TMJ bone morphology and different sagittal disc positions. Degenerative changes in TMJ bone morphology clinically diagnosed should be altered, which can be the patients' marker of anterior disc displacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the age-related positional and morphological characteristics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) between individuals with anterior openbite or crossbite and controls. METHODS This multi-cross-sectional comparative study analysed cone-beam computed tomography images of 750 participants, equally divided into the openbite, crossbite, and control groups (OBG, CBG, and CG, respectively). Each group was further divided into five subgroups (8-11 years, 12-15 years, 16-19 years, 20-24 years, and 25-30 years). Measurements of the TMJ included the position of the condyles in their respective fossae and morphology of the condyles and fossae. Data were submitted to statistical analysis. The study adhered to the STROBE Statement checklist for reporting of cross-sectional studies. RESULTS Condyles were positioned more posteriorly with increasing age in all groups, and the condylar position was more posterior in the OBG than in the CBG. The articular eminence inclination increased with age in all the groups. There were significant differences in the articular eminence inclination among the three major groups at the age of > 15 years, and the condylar path was flatter in the CBG than in the OBG. CONCLUSIONS Age-related morphological and positional characteristics of the TMJ differed considerably among OBG, CBG and CG. Contrary to CBG, OBG was found to have relatively posterior condylar position and steeper condylar path.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), which is a broad category encompassing disc displacement, is a common condition with an increasing prevalence. This study aimed to develop an automated movement tracing algorithm for mouth opening and closing videos, and to quantitatively analyze the relationship between the results obtained using this developed system and disc position on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Mouth opening and closing videos were obtained with a digital camera from 91 subjects, who underwent MRI. Before video acquisition, an 8.0-mm-diameter circular sticker was attached to the center of the subject's upper and lower lips. The automated mouth opening tracing system based on computer vision was developed in two parts: (I) automated landmark detection of the upper and lower lips in acquired videos, and (II) graphical presentation of the tracing results for detected landmarks and an automatically calculated graph height (mouth opening length) and width (sideways values). The graph paths were divided into three types: straight, sideways-skewed, and limited-straight line graphs. All traced results were evaluated according to disc position groups determined using MRI. Graph height and width were compared between groups using analysis of variance (SPSS version 25.0; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). RESULTS Subjects with a normal disc position predominantly (85.72%) showed straight line graphs. The other two types (sideways-skewed or limited-straight line graphs) were found in 85.0% and 89.47% in the anterior disc displacement with reduction group and in the anterior disc displacement without reduction group, respectively, reflecting a statistically significant correlation (χ2=38.113, P<0.001). A statistically significant difference in graph height was found between the normal group and the anterior disc displacement without reduction group, 44.90±9.61 and 35.78±10.24 mm, respectively (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The developed mouth opening tracing system was reliable. It presented objective and quantitative information about different trajectories from those associated with a normal disc position in mouth opening and closing movements. This system will be helpful to clinicians when it is difficult to obtain information through MRI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW The purpose of this article is to present the variations in maxillary molar palatal root canals and provide a reference for the possible variations in root canal treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION Five rare cases with palatal canal variation presented in this case series received nonsurgical endodontic treatment successfully. These case reports highlight that understanding and managing the different types of canal configurations in palatal roots of maxillary molars is essential to successful root canal treatment. We tried 2 methods of examining the palatal canal variation to provide examples for clinicians in diagnosing and treating similar cases. CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The outline form of the access cavity and the shape of the pulp chamber floor are important factors for identifying variations in root canal number. Moreover, cone-beam computed tomography can help in detecting variations in root canals.

The number of patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangements, who are seeking orthodontic treatment, is increasing. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the presence of TMJ reciprocal clicking and the morphology and position of the mandible, and position of lower incisors, examined on the lateral cephalograms. Fifty patients diagnosed with reciprocal clicking in at least one of the TMJs and 55 patients with no symptoms of TMJ dysfunction were included in the study. Cephalometric analysis was used for the assessment of: skeletal class, sagittal and vertical position of the mandible, angle of the mandible, inclination of the mandibular ramus and the mandibular corpus, as well as for the assessment of the position of the mandibular incisors. The statistical significance level was set at p = 0.05. There were no statistically significant differences between the examined groups regarding the sagittal and vertical position of the mandible, as well as regarding the sagittal position of the mandibular incisors. Presence of TMJ reciprocal clicking is not associated with the position and the morphology of the mandible, as well as with the sagittal position of the mandibular incisors. Patients with early stages of TMJ internal derangements do not present any significant changes in Cephalometrics. Patients diagnosed with TMJ internal derangements before orthodontic treatment require an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment, including physiotherapy.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may affect up to 25% of the population, with almost 70% of these TMD cases developing malpositioning of the disc over time in what is known as internal derangement (ID). Despite significant efforts, the molecular mechanism underlying disease progression is not yet very well known. In this study, the role of COL12A1 rs970547 and rs240736 polymorphisms as potential genetic factors regulating ID was investigated. The study included 124 Caucasian patients of both sexes after disc displacement without reduction (DDwoR) in either one or two temporomandibular joints (TMJs), either of which meet the criteria for this condition. All patients underwent clinical examination and 3D digital imaging. The COL12A1 rs970547 and rs240736 polymorphisms were evaluated. There were no statistically significant differences in the chi-square test between the study group and healthy controls. The examined COL12A1 rs240736 and rs970547 polymorphisms do not contribute to DDwoR in Polish Caucasians.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to analyze cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) patients and to comprehensively assess the relationships between these imaging findings and clinical symptoms. Methods A total of 754 temporomandibular joints (TMJs) in 377 patients with clinical symptoms of TMD who underwent both CBCT and MRI examinations were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical symptoms included TMJ pain, TMJ sound, and limitation of mouth opening. Oral radiologists evaluated osseous changes of the condylar head on CBCT, as well as the disc configuration, internal derangement, and joint effusion on MRI. The frequency of CBCT and MRI findings and the mean and standard deviation of age were analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between these imaging findings and clinical symptoms using SPSS version 25.0 for Windows (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The model fit was evaluated using the Hosmer and Lemeshow test. Results TMD patients consisted of 294 females and 83 males, and the age group of 20-39 accounted for 47.2% of the patients. Normal findings regarding osseous changes of the condylar head on CBCT were found in 65.1% of the patients. On MRI, a change in disc configuration was found in 54.9% of the patients, internal derangement in 62.6%, and joint effusion in 46.0%. TMJ pain was significantly associated with sclerosis [odds ratio (OR): 3.81], disc displacement without reduction (DDWOR) (OR: 3.22), grade 2 joint effusion (OR: 2.33), and grade 3 joint effusion (OR: 5.54). TMJ sound was significantly associated with disc displacement with reduction (DDWR) (OR: 3.04), DDWOR (OR: 2.50), grade 2 joint effusion (OR: 2.37), and grade 3 joint effusion (OR: 3.23). Limitation of mouth opening was significantly associated with flattened disc configuration (OR: 2.08), folded disc configuration (OR: 2.30), and grade 3 joint effusion (OR: 2.85). Conclusions CBCT findings had little to do with clinical symptoms. In contrast, MRI findings, including disc configuration, internal derangement, and joint effusion, were associated with clinical symptoms. These results suggest that MRI should be recommended over CBCT for the proper diagnosis of TMD patients.
