Effects of serum proteins on corrosion rates and product bioabsorbability of biodegradable metals

Corrodible metals are the newest kind of biodegradable materials and raise a new problem of the corrosion products. However, the removal of the precipitated products has been unclear and even largely ignored in publications. Herein, we find that albumin, an abundant macromolecule in serum, enhances the solubility of corrosion products of iron in blood mimetic Hank's solution significantly. This is universal for other main biodegradable metals such as magnesium, zinc and polyester-coated iron. Albumin also influences corrosion rates in diverse trends in Hank's solution and normal saline. Based on quantitative study theoretically and experimentally, both the effects on corrosion rates and soluble fractions are interpreted by a unified mechanism, and the key factor leading to different corrosion behaviors in corrosion media is the interference of albumin to the Ca/P passivation layer on the metal surface. This work has illustrated that the interactions between metals and media macromolecules should be taken into consideration in the design of the next-generation metal-based biodegradable medical devices in the formulism of precision medicine. The improved Hank's solution in the presence of albumin and with a higher content of initial calcium salt is suggested to access biodegradable metals potentially for cardiovascular medical devices, where the content of calcium salt is calculated after consideration of chelating of calcium ions by albumin, resulting in the physiological concentration of free calcium ions.

Reference intervals for glycated albumin during physiological pregnancy of Europid women: Evidences from a prospective observational study

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Glycated albumin (GA) may assess glycometabolic control over a short period of time respect to HbA_1c, and its use to screen for gestational diabetes in pregnancy has been suggested. To this regard few data on reference intervals (RI) for GA on Europid women have been collected, only from cross-sectional investigations. Aim of this work has been to collect trimester-specific RI for GA in physiological pregnancies, following a longitudinal prospective study.

METHODS

Forty-five healthy pregnant Europid women have been enrolled for whom a GDM screening test was scheduled at 24-28 weeks, in 5 different Italian centers. Only those negative to the OGTT were included. The women had 4 successive visits at 6-10 weeks of gestation, at 16-18 weeks, at 24-28 weeks and at the end of pregnancy. ALT, AST, total bilirubin, C-reactive protein, cholinesterase, creatinine, GGT, glycated albumin, iron, total serum proteins, transferrin were measured in duplicate on aliquots of serum samples by a central laboratory.

RESULTS

The RI (2.5-97.5 percentiles) for GA were 11.1-14.8 % (I visit), 10.9-15.6 % (II visit), 10.6-14.1 % (III visit) and 10.7-14.3 % (IV visit). The RI of other biomarkers confirmed previously published data. The RI for serum cholinesterase we present are novel, and were 5049-9906 U/L (Iv), 4212-8965 U/L (IIv), 3518-8470 U/L (IIIv) and 3945-8727 U/L (IVv).

CONCLUSIONS

Trimester-specific RI are important for using GA and serum cholinesterase in pregnancy. However, considering the high inter-individual variability of both markers, the use of longitudinal interpretations of the individual variations of both proteins during pregnancy should be preferred.

Plasma Protein Profile of Lactating Women from Two Primary Health Centers in Jakarta, Indonesia

BACKGROUND

Plasma protein profile test is a potential laboratory method to assess nutritional status especially albumin and globulins levels which reflects protein adequacy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate plasma protein profile of lactating women from two primary health centers in Jakarta.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted involving lactating women attending routine maternal examinations in two public primary health centers in Jakarta, Indonesia. The mother's plasma total protein, albumin, globulin, and immunoglobulin levels were measured.

RESULTS

Sixty lactating women were recruited, mostly were 28 years old, slightly overweight, bearing two children, and their recent children were 2 months old. The mean total protein level was 8.13 g/dl, albumin 5.00 g/dl, globulin 3.18 g/dl, albumin: globulin ratio 1.558, mean total IgG level of 1255.98 and mean total IgM level of 135.819. All the measured plasma protein parameters were shown to be not correlated with maternal age, maternal BMI, or maternal parity.

DISCUSSION

The plasma total protein, albumin, globulin, as well as total IgG and IgM level of lactating women in Jakarta were within normal range. These biochemical parameters were shown to be not correlated with anthropometrical data such as maternal age and BMI. The small and relatively homogenous samples were supposed to be the cause of such findings.

CONCLUSION

The plasma protein profile of lactating women in Jakarta was adequate. Further studies are required to evaluate the eligibility of plasma protein profile as biochemical parameter of nutritional status in lactating women.
