Abstract
Background Following discharge, it is crucial for patients to transfer intentions and action plans from inpatient rehabilitation into everyday life. This ensures their reintegration into social and working life and prevents economic costs due to sick leave or reduced earning capacity pension. However, most established aftercare programs do not specifically address occupational problems or challenges during occupational measures such as graded return to work. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the low-threshold online self-help intervention marena (Meine Arbeitsbezogene Reha-Nachsorge - My Work-related Rehabilitation Aftercare) to support return to work. Methods A two-arm randomized-controlled-trial (RCT) will be conducted. A total of N = 400 rehabilitation inpatients across different indication areas (psychosomatic, orthopedic, or cardiologic) aged 18 to 65 years with a planned return to work after medical rehabilitation, have a heightened social-medical risk and private internet access and are insured with the German Pension insurance or statutory health insurance, will be recruited in four medical and psychosomatic clinics in Germany. Participants will be allocated to either the intervention (IG) or the control group (CG). In a stepped-care model, participants of the IG will receive access to the non-guided internet- and mobile-based intervention marena (IG subgroup 1) or marena in combination with GSA-Online plus (IG subgroup 2), a guided psychodynamic internet-based intervention that has proven effective in two trials regarding occupational and health objectives. Based on a priori defined indication criteria, clinic staff will recommend either IG subgroup 1 or IG subgroup 2. The CG will receive optimized treatment as usual with access to a survey feature within marena. The primary outcome will be work status after 6 months (T2) and 12 months (T4). The endpoint at 12 months (T4) after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation will be considered as secondary endpoint. Work status is defined as positive if the participant is working and has ≤ 6 weeks of sick leave at T2 and ≤ 12 weeks of sick leave at T4. Secondary outcomes include successful completion of graded return to work, successful application for benefits for participation in working life, current work ability, social-medical risk, subjective prognosis of future employment, quality of life, somatic symptoms, coping, social support, depression, anxiety, and psychosocial stress. Discussion This study will contribute to the evidence concerning efficacy of online aftercare interventions. If proven efficacious, marena could provide an individualized and adaptable self-help approach to promote return to work following inpatient rehabilitation.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Although cross-sectional studies have reported the relationships among performance of activities of daily living (ADLs), income satisfaction, and health satisfaction, longitudinal associations in stroke survivors remain unclear. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of ADL function and income satisfaction on health satisfaction over time in stroke survivors. DESIGN Retrospective longitudinal study designs with latent growth curve models (LGMs) to control for time-varying and time-invariant covariates. SETTING Community. PARTICIPANTS A total of 198 stroke survivors. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Self-reported ADL performance, income satisfaction, and health satisfaction. RESULTS The average age of participants was 70.68 yr (SD = 8.09; 107 men, 91 women). Each LGM showed that an increase in ADL score (standardized β = 0.116∼0.296, all ps < .05) and income satisfaction (standardized β = 0.513∼0.726, all ps < .001) positively predicted health satisfaction over time, even after controlling for time-varying annual income, demographics, and behavioral characteristics. The fit results of all LGMs were within the acceptable range: χ2(47) = 66.378, p = .0327; χ2(47) = 57.742, p = .1355; root-mean-square error of approximation, <0.08; comparative fit index and Tucker-Lewis index, >0.90; standardized root-mean-square residual, <0.05. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Because ADLs are significant modifiable health satisfaction factors, occupational therapy practitioners would need to focus more closely on ADL training in clinical settings. Furthermore, referring those clients to appropriate vocational rehabilitation to improve their income satisfaction would be necessary. Plain-Language Summary: This study recognizes the unique challenges and opportunities that arise when stroke survivors are preparing to return to their communities by emphasizing the significance of ADL training and income satisfaction during this stage of recovery. The study suggests that the therapeutic use of ADL training and income satisfaction could increase health satisfaction for stroke survivors. Therefore, comprehensive ADL training, as an occupational therapy intervention, could be crucial for stroke survivors who are preparing to return to their community from a clinical setting. Furthermore, connecting with vocational rehabilitation could also be important for improving income satisfaction for stroke survivors who are preparing to return to a community.

Abstract
Introduction Existing evidence of returning-to-work (RTW) after cancer comes predominately from Western settings, with none prospectively examined since the initial diagnostic phase. This study prospectively documents RTW-rate, time-to-RTW, work productivity loss, and activity impairment, within the first-year post-surgery among Chinese women with breast cancer (BCW) and identify potential causal co-variants. Methods This observational longitudinal study followed 371 Chinese BCW who were employed/self-employed at the time of diagnosis at 4-week post-surgery (baseline). RTW-status and time-to-RTW were assessed at baseline (T1), 4-month (T2), 6-month (T3), and 12-month (T4) post-baseline. WPAI work productivity loss and activity impairment were assessed at T4. Baseline covariates included demographics, medical-related factors, work satisfaction, perceived work demand, work condition, RTW self-efficacy, B-IPQ illness perception, COST financial well-being, EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 physical and psychosocial functioning, and HADS psychological distress. Results A 68.2% RTW-rate (at 12-month post-surgery), prolonged delay in RTW (median = 183 days), and significant proportions of T4 work productivity loss (20%), and activity impairment (26%), were seen. BCW who were blue-collar workers with lower household income, poorer financial well-being, lower RTW self-efficacy, poorer job satisfaction, poorer illness perception, greater physical symptom distress, impaired physical functioning, and unfavorable work conditions were more likely to experience undesired work-related outcomes. Discussion Using a multifactorial approach, effective RTW interventions should focus on not only symptom management, but also to address psychosocial and work-environmental concerns. An organizational or policy level intervention involving a multidisciplinary team comprising nurses, psychologists, occupational health professionals, and relevant stakeholders in the workplace might be helpful in developing a tailored organizational policy promoting work-related outcomes in BCW.

Abstract
Objective To assess personal and work-related factors influencing the stress levels of nurses during prehospital care. Specifically, to identify associations between the level of perceived stress, the degree of professional experience, and the level of knowledge. Secondly, to examine the relationship between stress levels and violence in the work environment. And third, to investigate the main protective factors against work-related stress during prehospital care. Methods Systematic review in PubMed, WOS, Enfispo, Cochrane, and LILACS databases following the PRISMA methodology (last search 08/Aug/2023). Following the PECO framework, studies on occupational stress factors in ambulance emergency nurses were investigated. Studies in English or Spanish, from 2013 to 2023, and only research articles were admitted, thus excluding reviews, dissertations, and grey literature. Possible bias and level evidence were assessed using critical appraisal tools and GRADE. This protocol was registered in PROSPERO with code CRD42023446080. Results Fourteen articles were selected, and n=855 prehospital nurses were identified. One study was a clinical trial, and the others were observational and qualitative. The level of evidence was very low (n=7), low (n=6), and moderate (n=1); any study was excluded due to methodological bias. Five categories of stressors were extracted: the management of the health service (ie, workload organisation, and resources), patient care (mainly paediatric care), interpersonal stressors (relationship with peers), environmental factors (exposure to injuries), and personal factors (training, experience, and coping strategies). Violence at work is frequent for prehospital nurses, implying both verbal and physical aggressions. Support from peers was associated with positive results against stress. Conclusion Managing workload and improving resources in the work environment are essential to reduce fatigue and allow emotional processes to be addressed. Providing workers with coping skills also imposes on them the responsibility to cope with stress. Collective awareness is the main element in reducing the incidence of stress.

Abstract
Background The duration of postoperative leave varies by the carpal tunnel release (CTR) technique. This study aimed to determine the time to return to work (RTW) after CTR with ultrasound (CTR-US) guidance and identify factors contributing to this duration. Methods This was a multicenter postmarket registry of patients treated with CTR-US. Time to RTW was analyzed with Kaplan-Meier methods. Logistic regression identified the association of patient, work, and procedural factors with the probability of RTW within 5 days (a standard work week) after CTR-US. Results A total of 544 employed patients (655 hands) from 24 centers were treated with CTR-US between November 2019 and August 2022. The mean patient age was 50 years, 62% were women, and most (76%) were full-time employees, where work activities were desk-based (49%), light manual (28%), or heavy manual (23%). The complication rate was 0.8%. After CTR-US, the median RTW was 3 days (interquartile range: 1-6 days), with 74.6% returning by 5 days, 87.8% by 10 days, and 97.1% by 30 days. Work activity (desk-based versus heavy manual: odds ratio = 2.93, 95% confidence interval: 1.70-5.04, P < 0.001) and sex (man versus woman: odds ratio = 1.85, 95% confidence interval: 1.15-2.98, P = 0.01) were associated with higher probability of RTW within 5 days. The median RTW ranged from 2 to 4 days in all patient subgroups, including heavy manual laborers (median 4 days) and women (median 3 days). Conclusions CTR-US offers an efficient approach to treating CTS, enabling most patients to RTW with minimal delay. The short recovery periods observed across diverse patient and work characteristic subgroups compare favorably to other CTR techniques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A workers' compensation claim may have significant negative impacts on an injured worker's wellbeing. Wellbeing provides a good global measure of potential effects of a claim on an individual, and is important for contemporary economic modelling. The purpose of this study was to synthesize knowledge about the wellbeing of injured workers after the finalization of a workers' compensation claim and identify gaps in the current literature. METHODS A systematic scoping review was conducted. RESULTS 71 full-text articles were screened for inclusion, with 32 articles eligible for this review. None of the included articles evaluated overall wellbeing. Included articles did evaluate a variety of constructs inherent in wellbeing. Injured workers were generally disadvantaged in some manner following claim finalization. The literature recommends a focus on reducing negative impacts on injured workers after finalization of a compensation claim, with a need for regulatory bodies to review policy in this area. CONCLUSION There appears to be potential for ongoing burden for individuals, employers, and society after finalization of a workers' compensation claim. A gap in knowledge exists regarding the specific evaluation of wellbeing of injured workers following finalization of a workers' compensation claim.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the status and influencing factors of two-way social support among old adults. A cross-sectional study of 408 convenient samples of old adults was conducted using socio-demographic questionnaire, Brief 2-Way Social Support Scale, Modified Barthel index, General Well-being Schedule, Family APGAR Index, and Lubben Social Network Scale 6. The two-way social support score for old adults in China was (43.74±7.86), with the receiving and giving social support scoring (22.80±4.06) and (20.94±4.52), respectively. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that family care, residence place, socioeconomic status, and social network were associated with both receiving and giving social support. Chronic diseases and religious beliefs were related to receiving social support, while gender, general well-being, and residence form were related to giving social support. Tailored interventions based on the distinct influencing factors are needed to enhance old adults' social support both as recipients and providers.

Abstract
Background Evidence on the impact of post COVID-19 condition (PCC) on work ability is limited but critical due to its high prevalence among working-age individuals. This study aimed to evaluate the association between PCC, work ability, and occupational changes in a population-based cohort. Methods We used data from working-age adults included in a prospective, longitudinal cohort of a random sample of all individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 between August 2020 and January 2021 in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. We evaluated current work ability, work ability related to physical and mental demands, and estimated future work ability in 2 years (assessed using Work Ability Index), and PCC-related occupational changes one year after infection. Findings Of 672 individuals included in this study, 120 (17.9%) were categorised as having PCC (defined as presence of self-reported COVID-19 related symptoms) at 12 months. There was very strong evidence that current work ability scores were mean 0.62 (95% CI 0.30-0.95) points lower among those with PCC compared to those without in adjusted regression analyses. Similarly, there was very strong evidence for lower odds of reporting higher work ability with respect to physical (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.30, 95% CI 0.20-0.46) and mental (aOR 0.40, 0.27-0.62) demands in individuals with PCC. Higher age and history of psychiatric diagnosis were associated with more substantial reductions in current work ability. 5.8% of those with PCC reported direct effects of PCC on their occupational situation, with 1.6% of those with PCC completely dropping out of the workforce. Interpretation These findings highlight the need for providing support and interdisciplinary interventions to individuals affected by PCC to help them maintain or regain their work ability and productivity. Abstract
Objective The study aimed to explore the predictors of work withdrawal behavior among young lung cancer survivors and examine the mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between social support and work withdrawal behavior. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in a cancer center in southern China. A total of 215 young lung cancer survivors were recruited from January 2021 to July 2021 and investigated by a demographic and disease-related questionnaire, the Work Withdrawal Behavior Scale, Social Support Rating Scale, and General Self-efficacy Scale. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) and PROCESS macro version 3.3 for SPSS developed by Preacher and Hayes. Results The mean score of work withdrawal behavior was 3.02 (±0.70). Existing symptoms, income, residence, the duration of postoperative rest time, social support, and self-efficacy were the predictors and explained 70.2% of the variance of work withdrawal behavior. The mediating effect of self-efficacy was identified between social support and work withdrawal behavior (indirect effect = 0.36, bias-corrected 95% confidence interval [-0.542 to -0.197]). Conclusions Work withdrawal behavior was prevalent among young lung cancer survivors. Social support and self-efficacy were significantly associated with work withdrawal behavior, and self-efficacy was identified as a mediator between social support and work withdrawal behavior among this group. Health professionals could help them return and adapt to work by relieving their symptoms, providing social support, and enhancing their self-efficacy.

Abstract
Purpose Obesity is related to lower labour force participation, increased sickness absence and reduced productivity. The rehabilitation services in Norway have not had much experience introducing a work dimension into lifestyle interventions for persons with obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate one such type of intervention. Methods This is a qualitative study seeking to gather data on the participants’ experiences. Twenty participants were recruited from two lifestyle interventions. Intervention A, with work focus, included lectures and individual guidance from a work consultant in addition to the lifestyle intervention. Intervention B was a traditional lifestyle intervention. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews held at each stay. Results Seven main themes emerged and one of them pointed towards a confusion of the aim of the intervention, which was viewed as focusing on lifestyle rather than a process focused on work. Otherwise, the results showed that persons with obesity struggle with many of the same inhibiting factors as other groups with reduced work ability. Conclusions The application process might explain the focus on lifestyle change. Communication, guidance and support reduce barriers for lifestyle change, but work is important for general health and social well-being and a work focus may therefore be beneficial in all lifestyle interventions.

Abstract
Common mental disorders are associated with long-term sick leave, especially among women. There is a lack of theory-based research regarding the impact of personal factors on return to work and psychological well-being. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether return-to-work beliefs and perceived health were predictors of return to work and psychological well-being among women during or after long-term sick leave for common mental disorders, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour. This was a prospective cohort study with a 1-year follow-up. At baseline, women (n = 282) had been on full- or part-time sick leave for common mental disorders for 2-24 months. Data were collected in October 2019-January 2020 and October 2020-January 2021 in Sweden. The Social Insurance Agency identified the women at baseline. The Return-To-Work Beliefs Questionnaire, EuroQol Visual Analogue Scale and General Health Questionnaire-12 were used. Multiple logistic and linear regression analyses were conducted. The women were divided into two groups: full-time sick leave or part-time sick leave at baseline. The results showed that stronger return-to-work intention significantly predicted return to work among women on full-time sick leave at baseline. No significant predictors of return to work were found among women on part-time sick leave at baseline. Psychological well-being was predicted by stronger social pressure to return to work (full-time group) and a more positive attitude toward returning to work and better perceived health (part-time group). We concluded that the Theory of Planned Behaviour can be useful for understanding return to work among women on full-time sick leave, and what underlies psychological well-being in both groups. However, return to work and psychological well-being were predicted by different factors, indicating that a multifactorial approach should be used in supporting women to return to work after long-term sick leave for common mental disorders.

Abstract
This nationwide, large-scale, cross-sectional study has hypothesized that there might be differences in workers' satisfaction with work environment depending on demographic, socio-economic, and work characteristics in the context of a mismatch between actual and preferred working hours. The current study is a secondary data analysis of the Fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey. A total of 29 694 subjects (n = 29 694) were finally included in the current study. Female gender (β = -.372, OR 0.689 [95% CI 0.646-0.736]), age of ≥60 years old (β = .226, OR 1.253 [95% CI 1.089-1.441]), graduation from middle school (β = -.320, OR 0.726 [95% CI 0.616-0.856]), college (β = .492, OR 1.636 [95% CI 1.371-1.952]), or university (β = .826, OR 2.283 [95% CI 1.918-2.718]), fixed period of work (β = -.105, OR 0.901 [95% CI 0.823-0.986]), full-time employment (β = -.105, OR 0.900 [95% CI 0.813-0.996]), the engagement in public sector (β = .544, OR 1.722 [95% CI 1.532-1.935]), private-public partnership organization (β = .605, OR 1.832 [95% CI 1.342-2.500]) or NPO or NGO (β = .780, OR 2.182 [95% CI 1.522-3.127]), regular side job (β = -.929, OR 0.395 [95% CI 0.289-0.539]), or temporary side job (β = -.330, OR 0.719 [95% CI 0.533-0.970]), membership of multiple teams (β = -.501, OR 0.606 [95% CI 0.552-0.666]), labor union (β = .143, OR 1.154 [95% CI 1.047-1.273]), and better health status (β = .977, OR 2.657 [95% CI 1.175-6.007]) were predictors of satisfaction with work environment in the context of a mismatch between actual and desired working hours. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between employees' work performance and their well-being, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction in sedentary jobs in Slovenian enterprises using a mixed-methods research design. The quantitative component of the research included the responses to four selected questionnaires of 120 employees in 22 identified enterprises (out of 81), with more than 20 employees, having more than 85 percent sedentary jobs. Each of four questionnaires was chosen to cover one area of enquiry under the research foci of work performance, job satisfaction, life satisfaction and well-being. The statistical program STATA was used for data analyses. The analysis shows statistically significant positive correlations between employee performance and job satisfaction (r = 0.35), employee performance and life satisfaction (r = 0.28), life satisfaction and well-being (r = 0.33), and job satisfaction and well-being, whereas the correlation between well-being and work performance did not prove to be statistically significant. The qualitative component of the mixed-methods research design included systematic observation combined with one-to-one discussions. The results indicated that job satisfaction and life satisfaction are more significant in determining work performance in sedentary jobs than employee well-being and that being unwell is still considered a sign of weakness; therefore, employees who are unwell do not want to expose themselves and refuse to cooperate in activities and studies about well-being. Further research examining the impact on work performance of organizational climate measurements in sedentary jobs is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the industrialized world and a large part of stroke survivors is of working age. A very important goal for these people is to return to work after stroke as it facilitates independent living and guarantees a high level of self-esteem and life satisfaction. AIM To find the main factors that facilitate and hinder the return to work (RTW) in people who suffered from stroke through an overview of systematic reviews. METHODS A systematic search using keywords and medical subject heading terms was conducted in January 2022, three electronic databases were searched: Medline (PubMed), Scopus and ISI Web. The articles that address the question of returning to work or maintaining employment of people of working age after stroke were included in the systematic review, as well as studies describing factors that facilitate and/or hinder RTW after stroke. Only systematic reviews written in English language were included in this overview. RESULTS The search revealed 180 records after removing duplicates, but only a total of 24 systematic reviews were included in the overview. This research shows that in people who have suffered from a stroke, individual abilities, socioeconomic factors, healthcare factors, and disabilities resulting from the stroke itself are the most critical factors influencing the RTW. Conclusion: Future research should focus on cognitive disabilities, as main RTW hindering factor, and vocational rehabilitation, as the more suitable factor for improving the RTW in stroke survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide updated evidence on prognostic factors for return to work (RTW) in the early and late phases after acute orthopedic trauma from a biopsychosocial perspective. METHODS A systematic review of articles indexed in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Embase databases between 2010 and 2020 was performed. The inclusion criteria were cohort studies of employed populations sustaining acute orthopedic trauma with follow-up data on RTW. Biopsychosocial prognostic factors for RTW must be reported in the multiple regression models and divided into early (≤ 6 months) and late phases (> 6 months) postinjury. Two reviewers performed study selection, assessed the risk of bias and quality using the Quality in Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), and extracted data independently. RESULTS Thirty articles were included with a follow-up period of 1-58 months. Based on the QUIPS tool, 7 studies (23%) were considered to have a low risk of bias, and 21 studies (70%) were considered to have a moderate risk of bias. Based on the NOS, the quality was high in 87% of the included studies. The RTW rates ranged from 22% to 74% in the early phase and from 44% to 94% in the late phase. In the early phase, strong evidence was found for injury severity. In the late phase, strong evidence was found for age, injury severity, level of pain, self-efficacy, educational level, blue-collar work, and compensation status; moderate evidence was found for recovery expectations and physical workload. There was limited or inconsistent evidence for the other factors. CONCLUSION Based on the levels of evidence, injury severity should be considered as one of the key barriers to RTW in the early and late phases postinjury. This finding underlines the need for serious injury prevention efforts. Our results also emphasize the multifaceted actions of the biopsychosocial model to facilitate RTW: promoting policies for older injured workers, improving access to medical and rehabilitation facilities, and adapting physical workload. Multiple other factors are likely important but require additional high-quality studies to assess their role in the RTW process.

Abstract
Purpose We aimed to use the self-efficacy model to examine the participants’ experience, attitudes, and viewpoints regarding the association between work, health and lifestyle factors that influence work participation after completing a new one-year multidisciplinary vocational rehabilitation (VR) programme with a lifestyle intervention for people on or at risk of sick leave due to obesity or obesity-related problems. Materials and Methods This case study was based on focus group (FG) interviews with 11 previous participants. The interviews were conducted 2 to 4 years after they completed the program, between August and September 2019. The analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s six-phase reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) approach. Results The main theme “Work participation enhances quality of life” was prominent and related to mastery experience. Four sub-themes directly and indirectly affect work participation. The first sub-theme is “My attitude to life”, influenced by mastery experiences. Next, “Body size matters”, related to physiological and affective states. “Good physical capacity profit in everyday life” is associated to physiological and affective states, and the last “Support from the surroundings” influenced by vicarious experience and Verbal Persuasion. Conclusion This study’s main finding highlights how participants value work participation as a meaningful activity that positively influences their work self-efficacy. Future VR programs should pay attention to interventions focusing on the workplace, cognitive approaches to develop skills for coping strategies, lifestyle change purposing BMI reduction, physical activity, and support from the surroundings.
