Comprehensive Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals Based on Species Sensitivity Distribution in Aquatic of Coastal Areas in Hong Kong

Deterioration phenomenon of Pb-contaminated aqueous solution remediation and enhancement mechanism of nano-hydroxyapatite-assisted biomineralization

Modern metallurgical and smelting activities discharge the lead-containing wastewater, causing serious threats to human health. Bacteria and urease applied to microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) are denatured under high Pb2+ concentration. The nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP)-assisted biomineralization technology was applied in this study for Pb immobilization. Results showed that the extracellular polymers and cell membranes failed to secure the urease activity when subjected to 60 mM Pb2+. The immobilization efficiency dropped to below 50% under MICP, whereas it due to a lack of extracellular polymers and cell membranes dropped to below 30% under EICP. nHAP prevented the attachment of Pb2+ either through competing with bacteria and urease or promoting Ca2+/Pb2+ ion exchange. Furthermore, CO32- from ureolysis replaced the hydroxyl (-OH) in hydroxylpyromorphite to encourage the formation of carbonate-bearing hydroxylpyromorphite of higher stability (Pb10(PO4)6CO3). Moreover, nHAP application overcame an inability to provide nucleation sites by urease. As a result, the immobilization efficiency, when subjected to 60 mM Pb2+, elevated to above 80% under MICP-nHAP and to some 70% under EICP-nHAP. The findings highlight the potential of applying the nHAP-assisted biomineralization technology to Pb-containing water bodies remediation.

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of seawater halobios to micro/nano-scale polystyrene-cadmium exposure in a marine food web

Micro/nano-plastics (MPs/NPs) represent an emerging contaminant, posing a significant threat to oceanic halobios. While the adverse effects of joint pollutants on marine organisms are well-documented, the potential biological impacts on the food chain transmission resulting from combinations of MPs/NPs and heavy metals (HMs) remain largely unexplored. This study exposed the microbial loop to combined contaminants (MPs/NPs + HMs) for 48h, bacteria and contaminants are washed away before feeding to the traditional food chain, employing microscopic observation, biochemical detection, and transcriptome analysis to elucidate the toxicological mechanisms of the top predator. The findings revealed that MPs/NPs combined with Cd2+ could traverse both the microbial loop and classical food chain. Acute exposure significantly affected the carbon biomass of the top predator Tigriopus japonicus (75.8% lower). Elevated antioxidant enzyme activity led to lipid peroxidation, manifesting in increased malondialdehyde levels. Transcriptome sequencing showed substantial differential gene expression levels in T. japonicus under various treatments. The upregulation of genes associated with apoptosis and inflammatory responses, highlighting the impact of co-exposure on oxidative damage and necroptosis within cells. Notably, NPs-Cd exhibited stronger toxicity than MPs-Cd. NPs-Cd led to a greater decrease in the biomass of top predators, accompanied by lower activities of GSH, SOD, CAT, and GSH-PX, resulting in increased production of lipid peroxidation product MDA and higher oxidative stress levels. This investigation provides novel insights into the potential threats of MPs/NPs combined with Cd2+ on the microbial loop across traditional food chain, contributing to a more comprehensive assessment of the ecological risks associated with micro/nano-plastics and heavy metals.

Heavy metal toxicity in poultry: a comprehensive review

Arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) have been recognized as most toxic heavy metals that are continuously released into the environment, both from natural sources and from anthropogenic production of fertilizers, industrial activities, and waste disposal. Therefore, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb are found in increasing concentrations in bodies of water, fodder, feed, and in the tissues of livestock, including poultry, in the surroundings of industrial areas, leading to metabolic, structural, and functional abnormalities in various organs in all animals. In poultry, bioaccumulation of As, Pb, Cd, and Hg occurs in many organs (mainly in the kidneys, liver, reproductive organs, and lungs) as a result of continuous exposure to heavy metals. Consumption of Cd lowers the efficiency of feed conversion, egg production, and growth in poultry. Chronic exposure to As, Pb, Cd, and Hg at low doses can change the microscopic structure of tissues (mainly in the brain, liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs) as a result of the increased content of these heavy metals in these tissues. Histopathological changes occurring in the kidneys, liver, and reproductive organs are reflected in their negative impact on enzyme activity and serum biochemical parameters. Metal toxicity is determined by route of exposure, length of exposure, and absorbed dosage, whether chronic and acute. This review presents a discussion of bioaccumulation of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg in poultry and the associated histopathological changes and toxic concentrations in different tissues.

GIS-based approach and multivariate statistical analysis for identifying sources of heavy metals in marine sediments from the coast of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is an urbanized coastal city which experiences substantially different metal loads from anthropogenic activities. This study was aimed at analyzing the spatial distribution and pollution evaluation of ten selected heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni, Zn, Fe, V) in the coastal sediments of Hong Kong. The distribution of heavy metal pollution in sediments has been analyzed using the geographic information system (GIS) technique, and their pollution degrees, corresponding potential ecological risks and source identifications, have been studied by applying the enrichment factor (EF) analysis, contamination factor (CF) analysis, potential ecological risk index (PEI), and integrated multivariate statistical methods, respectively. Firstly, the GIS technique was used to access the spatial distribution of the heavy metals; the result revealed that pollution trend of these metals was decreased from the inner to the outer coast sites of the studied area. Secondly, combining the EF analysis and CF analysis, we found that the pollution degree of heavy metals followed the order of Cu > Cr > Cd > Zn > Pb > Hg > Ni > Fe > As > V. Thirdly, the PERI calculations showed that Cd, Hg, and Cu were the most potential ecological risk factors compared to other metals. Finally, cluster analysis combined with principal component analysis showed that Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni might originate from the industrial discharges and shipping activities. V, As, and Fe were mainly derived from the natural origin, whereas Cd, Pb, and Zn were identified from the municipal discharges and industrial wastewater. In conclusion, this work should be helpful in the establishment of strategies for contamination control and optimization of industrial structures in Hong Kong.
