Effect of Marriage on Burnout among Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Occupational well-being in medical workers in Inner Mongolia after the Normalized Epidemic Prevention and Control Strategy: A cross-sectional study

Little is known about the status of occupational well-being among the Chinese medical workers after the implementation of Normalized Epidemic Prevention and Control strategy as most studies are performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was designed to investigate the occupational well-being among the medical workers in our city in the COVID-19 after the release of Normalized Epidemic Prevention and Control Strategy since May 7, 2020 in mainland China. We included the medical workers involved in the front-line of COVID-19 that were randomly selected from 7 hospitals in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The occupational well-being among medical workers was evaluated using the modified occupational well-being scales and the symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) scale. Then Logistic regression analysis was given to identify the risk factors that may affect the occupational well-being among the medical workers. Our data showed that hospital type (p < 0.01), hospital grade (p < 0.01), marital status (p < 0.01) and monthly income (p < 0.01) were independent risk factors for the occupational well-being among the medical workers. Obsessive-compulsive disorder, somatization, phobic anxiety, depression and interpersonal sensitivity were risk factors for poor occupational well-being. Therefore, attention should be given to the occupational well-being of the medical workers. Meanwhile, appropriate measurements are necessary to improve their working quality.

Self-compassion letter tool for healthcare worker well-being: a qualitative descriptive analysis

OBJECTIVE

This qualitative study aimed to identify categories within therapeutic self-compassion letters written by healthcare workers. Resulting categories were assessed for their relevance to the construct of self-compassion.

DESIGN

This was a qualitative descriptive study that used summative content analysis and inductive coding.

SETTING

A US-based academic healthcare system.

PARTICIPANTS

Healthcare workers who attended a self-compassion webinar were recruited.

INTERVENTION

The online self-compassion tool asked participants to write a letter to themselves from the perspective of a friend providing support and encouragement.

RESULTS

116 letters were analysed. Five major categories emerged: Looking Forward, Reaffirming Self, Reaffirming Reminders, Hardships and Self-Disparagement. Respondents' letters were mostly positively framed and forward thinking, including their hopes of improving themselves and their lives in the future. Negative content generally described hardships and often served to provide self-validation or perspective on obstacles that had been overcome.

CONCLUSION

The writing prompt elicited content from the writers that reflected the core elements of self-compassion (ie, self-kindness, common humanity, mindfulness). Continued research to further understand, refine and improve the impact of therapeutic letter writing to enhance well-being is warranted to reduce burnout and promote quality patient care.

Work-related flow and its correlates among frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

Ample evidence across non-healthcare fields highlights the role of work-related flow in enhancing resilience against work stress and work engagement. Understanding flow and its factors can support staff development and management.

AIMS

This study aimed to investigate the level of work-related flow and its associated factors among frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

A cross-sectional multicenter study included 336 nurses caring for COVID-19 patients between March and April 2022. Cluster random sampling was used to select 9 nurse groups from 29 Taiwanese hospitals specialized in COVID-19 care. A web survey link was shared on the selected nurses' social media. Hierarchical regression analyses examined predictor-outcome relationships, following the STROBE checklist for reporting findings.

RESULTS

Among demographic characteristics, sex (β = -0.11; p = 0.016) and living arrangement (β = -0.12; p = 0.017) reached statistical significance in model 3. Social support from family, friends, and significant others, managerial position, and sufficiency of personal protective equipment showed significant associations with work-related flow (all β > 0.12; p < 0.05). The variables included in the final model accounted for 35% of the variance in work-related flow for COVID-19 patient care tasks.

CONCLUSIONS

Flow experience is influenced by factors associated with demographics, work conditions, and social support. Nurse administrators should consider these factors when evaluating nurses' flow at work.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND MANAGEMENT

Allocating care tasks to nurses based on their flow levels can be beneficial, particularly during healthcare crises. Ensuring a sufficient supply of personal protective equipment and offering social support to nurses are vital strategies for facilitating their flow experience in the workplace.

The Nursing Work Environment, Supervisory Support, Nurse Characteristics, and Burnout as Predictors of Intent to Stay among Hospital Nurses in the Republic of Korea: A Path Analysis

This study aimed to examine the comprehensive impact of five aspects of the nursing work environment as well as supervisory support, nurse characteristics, and burnout on intent to stay (ITS) among Korean hospital nurses. A cross-sectional questionnaire was distributed in seven general hospitals from May to July of 2019. Data were collected from a sample of 631 Korean nurses. The hypothesized model was evaluated using the STATA program for path models. Findings demonstrated that burnout played a mediating role on the relationships between the nursing work environment, supervisory support, nurse characteristics, and ITS. Burnout was the most influential predictor of ITS (β = -0.36, p < 0.001). Nurse participation in hospital affairs (β = 0.10, p = 0.044) and collegial nurse-physician relationships (β = 0.08, p = 0.038) had a direct effect on ITS. Supervisory support had a significant direct effect on ITS (β = 0.19, p < 0.001). Therefore, to increase nurses' ITS, it is necessary to improve their participation in hospital affairs and collegial relationships, as well as strengthen support from supervisors and reduce burnout.

Burnout Among Healthcare Workers During Covid-19 Pandemic: Results from Seven Hospitals in Western Greece

Background

Burnout is increasingly being recognized as a major concern, affecting the physical and mental well-being of Healthcare workers (HCWs).

Objective

The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of occupational exhaustion in healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, paramedics, assistants, administrative staff) and possible contributing factors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

This study was conducted from March to September 2022 in seven (7) hospitals in Western Greece. It was carried out using an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed based on results of previously published studies and consisted of 22 multiple-choice questions.

Results

There were 259 (60.2%) female and 178 (39.8%) male participants enrolled in the study. The majority of the respondents were nurses (n=207, 48.1%), followed by doctors (n+ 178, 41.4%). There was a marked increase in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal fulfillment and pandemic-related total burnout in participants older than 61 years old (40,05±2,2, 27,16±1,0, 21,11±4,1, 88,32±4,3, respectively). Widow/ers healthcare workers were mostly affected from pandemic related burnout compared to married, unmarried, and divorced healthcare workers. Respondents without postgraduate education demonstrated significantly greater prevalence of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and pandemic-related total burnout in comparison to those with doctoral/master degree. The prevalence of personal and work-related burnout among paramedics and administrative staff was higher than that seen in doctors and nurses(32,82±3,8 vs32,08±5,0/29,11±4,7 22,33±4,0 vs21,57±3,1/18,89±5,4 19,60±3,9 vs17,26±2,8/15,24±3,7 74,76±10,4 vs70,92±9,5/63,23±12,1).The prevalence of emotional exhaustion and work-related total burnout was significantly higher among doctors, nurses, paramedics, and administrative staff working with direct contact with COVID-19 patients than those among healthcare workers working without direct contact with COVID-19 patients.

Conclusion

The present study highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers.
