This study primarily addresses the analytical problem of the mathematical mechanism underlying the associative impact between online searches and vaccine uptake, a relationship that has become increasingly relevant in the context of public health management. As internet search behaviors reflect public interest and sentiment, understanding their impact on vaccination trends is crucial for real-time health decision-making. A Logistic model is constructed to observe the fundamental evolutionary patterns between online searches and vaccine uptake. To explore their mutual influence, an impact function is defined, and the common structural factors with the highest fitness are determined through data fitting. Subsequently, a dynamic detection model of the associative impact between online data and societal objects, based on the mathematical mechanism, is established. Using this model, dynamic predictions are conducted to verify its predictive capability at certain stages. Through research, a symbiotic effect between online searches and vaccine uptake is identified, revealing a nonlinear correlation between the two. The model demonstrates the ability to predict vaccine uptake trends based on online search data, with certain prediction windows showing high accuracy. This research not only clarifies the mathematical mechanism underlying this relationship but also demonstrates the advantage of integrated analysis and prediction. It provides a new method for predicting online searches and vaccine uptake, offering theoretical and empirical support for public health and social science research.

When Infodemic Meets Epidemic: Systematic Literature Review

BACKGROUND

Epidemics and outbreaks present arduous challenges, requiring both individual and communal efforts. The significant medical, emotional, and financial burden associated with epidemics creates feelings of distrust, fear, and loss of control, making vulnerable populations prone to exploitation and manipulation through misinformation, rumors, and conspiracies. The use of social media sites has increased in the last decade. As a result, significant amounts of public data can be leveraged for biosurveillance. Social media sites can also provide a platform to quickly and efficiently reach a sizable percentage of the population; therefore, they have a potential role in various aspects of epidemic mitigation.

OBJECTIVE

This systematic literature review aimed to provide a methodical overview of the integration of social media in 3 epidemic-related contexts: epidemic monitoring, misinformation detection, and the relationship with mental health. The aim is to understand how social media has been used efficiently in these contexts, and which gaps need further research efforts.

METHODS

Three research questions, related to epidemic monitoring, misinformation, and mental health, were conceptualized for this review. In the first PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) stage, 13,522 publications were collected from several digital libraries (PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, MDPI, ACM, and ACL) and gray literature sources (arXiv and ProQuest), spanning from 2010 to 2022. A total of 242 (1.79%) papers were selected for inclusion and were synthesized to identify themes, methods, epidemics studied, and social media sites used.

RESULTS

Five main themes were identified in the literature, as follows: epidemic forecasting and surveillance, public opinion understanding, fake news identification and characterization, mental health assessment, and association of social media use with psychological outcomes. Social media data were found to be an efficient tool to gauge public response, monitor discourse, identify misleading and fake news, and estimate the mental health toll of epidemics. Findings uncovered a need for more robust applications of lessons learned from epidemic "postmortem documentation." A vast gap exists between retrospective analysis of epidemic management and result integration in prospective studies.

CONCLUSIONS

Harnessing the full potential of social media in epidemic-related tasks requires streamlining the results of epidemic forecasting, public opinion understanding, and misinformation detection, all while keeping abreast of potential mental health implications. Proactive prevention has thus become vital for epidemic curtailment and containment.

Economical-epidemiological analysis of the coffee trees rust pandemic

Coffee leaf rust is a prevalent botanical disease that causes a worldwide reduction in coffee supply and its quality, leading to immense economic losses. While several pandemic intervention policies (PIPs) for tackling this rust pandemic are commercially available, they seem to provide only partial epidemiological relief for farmers. In this work, we develop a high-resolution spatiotemporal economical-epidemiological model, extending the Susceptible-Infected-Removed model, that captures the rust pandemic's spread in coffee tree farms and its associated economic impact. Through extensive simulations for the case of Colombia, a country that consists mostly of small-size coffee farms and is the second-largest coffee producer in the world, our results show that it is economically impractical to sustain any profit without directly tackling the rust pandemic. Furthermore, even in the hypothetical case where farmers perfectly know their farm's epidemiological state and the weather in advance, any rust pandemic-related efforts can only amount to a limited profit of roughly 4% on investment. In the more realistic case, any rust pandemic-related efforts are expected to result in economic losses, indicating that major disturbances in the coffee market are anticipated.

Using an epidemiological model to explore the interplay between sharing and advertising in viral videos

How to exploit social networks to make internet content spread rapidly and consistently is an interesting question in marketing management. Although epidemic models have been employed to comprehend the spread dynamics of internet content, such as viral videos, the effects of advertising and individual sharing on information dissemination are difficult to distinguish. This gap forbids us to evaluate the efficiency of marketing strategies. In this paper, we modify a classic mean-field SIR (susceptible-infected-recovered) model, incorporating the influences of sharing and advertising in viral videos. We mathematically analyze the global stability of the system and propose an agent-based modeling approach to evaluate the efficiency of sharing and advertising. We further provide a case study of music videos on YouTube to show the validity of our model.

Innovative applications of artificial intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges worldwide. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies hold tremendous potential for tackling key aspects of pandemic management and response. In the present review, we discuss the tremendous possibilities of AI technology in addressing the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. First, we outline the multiple impacts of the current pandemic on public health, the economy, and society. Next, we focus on the innovative applications of advanced AI technologies in key areas such as COVID-19 prediction, detection, control, and drug discovery for treatment. Specifically, AI-based predictive analytics models can use clinical, epidemiological, and omics data to forecast disease spread and patient outcomes. Additionally, deep neural networks enable rapid diagnosis through medical imaging. Intelligent systems can support risk assessment, decision-making, and social sensing, thereby improving epidemic control and public health policies. Furthermore, high-throughput virtual screening enables AI to accelerate the identification of therapeutic drug candidates and opportunities for drug repurposing. Finally, we discuss future research directions for AI technology in combating COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Though promising, barriers related to model generalization, data quality, infrastructure readiness, and ethical risks must be addressed to fully translate these innovations into real-world impacts. Multidisciplinary collaboration engaging diverse expertise and stakeholders is imperative for developing robust, responsible, and human-centered AI solutions against COVID-19 and future public health emergencies.

Competitive dual-strain SIS epidemiological models with awareness programs in heterogeneous networks: two modeling approaches

Epidemic diseases and media campaigns are closely associated with each other. Considering most epidemics have multiple pathogenic strains, in this paper, we take the lead in proposing two multi-strain SIS epidemic models in heterogeneous networks incorporating awareness programs due to media. For the first model, we assume that the transmission rates for strain 1 and strain 2 depend on the level of awareness campaigns. For the second one, we further suppose that awareness divides susceptible population into two different subclasses. After defining the basic reproductive numbers for the whole model and each strain, we obtain the analytical conditions that determine the extinction, coexistence and absolute dominance of two strains. Moreover, we also formulate its optimal control problem and identify an optimal implementation pair of awareness campaigns using optimal control theory. Given the complexity of the second model, we use the numerical simulations to visualize its different types of dynamical behaviors. Through theoretical and numerical analysis of these two models, we discover some new phenomena. For example, during the persistence analysis of the first model, we find that the characteristic polynomials of two boundary equilibria may have a pair of pure imaginary roots, implying that Hopf bifurcation and periodic solutions may appear. Most strikingly, multistability occurs in the second model and the growth rate of awareness programs (triggered by the infection prevalence) has a multistage impact on the final size of two strains. The numerical results suggest that the spread of a two-strain epidemic can be controlled (even be eradicated) by taking the measures of enhancing awareness transmission, reducing memory fading of aware individuals and ensuring high-level influx and rapid growth of awareness programs appropriately.
