Prediction of Binding Stability of Pu(IV) and PuO2(VI) by Nitrogen Tridentate Ligands in Aqueous Solution

Chelating Extractants for Metals

In the present review, works on the classes of chelating extractants for metals, compounds with several amide and carboxyl groups, azomethines, oximes, macrocyclic compounds (crown ethers and calixarenes), phenanthroline derivatives, and others are systematized. This review focuses on the efficiency and selectivity of the extractants in the recovery of metals from industrial wastewater, soil, spent raw materials, and the separation of metal mixtures. As a result of this study, it was found that over the past seven years, the largest number of works has been devoted to the extraction of heavy metals with amino acids (16 articles), azomethines and oximes (12 articles), lanthanids with amide compounds (15 articles), lanthanides and actinides with phenanthroline derivatives (7 articles), and noble metals with calixarenes (4 articles). Analysis of the literature showed that amino acids are especially effective for extracting heavy metals from the soil; thiodiglycolamides and aminocalixarenes for extracting noble metals from industrial waste; amide compounds, azomethines, oximes, and phenanthroline derivatives for extracting actinides; amide compounds for extracting lanthanides; crown ethers for extracting radioactive strontium, rhenium and technetium. The most studied parameters of extraction processes in the reviewed articles were the distribution ratios and separation factors. Based on the reviewed articles, it follows that chelate polydentate compounds are more efficient compounds for the extraction of metals from secondary resources compared to monodentate compounds.

Assessment of Various Density Functional Theory Methods for Finding Accurate Structures of Actinide Complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used computational method for predicting the physical and chemical properties of metals and organometals. As the number of electrons and orbitals in an atom increases, DFT calculations for actinide complexes become more demanding due to increased complexity. Moreover, reasonable levels of theory for calculating the structures of actinide complexes are not extensively studied. In this study, 38 calculations, based on various combinations, were performed on molecules containing two representative actinides to determine the optimal combination for predicting the geometries of actinide complexes. Among the 38 calculations, four optimal combinations were identified and compared with experimental data. The optimal combinations were applied to a more complicated and practical actinide compound, the uranyl complex (UO₂(2,2′-(1E,1′E)-(2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-dyl)bis(azanylylidene)(CH₃OH)), for further confirmation. The corresponding optimal calculation combination provides a reasonable level of theory for accurately optimizing the structure of actinide complexes using DFT.

Neptunium(V) Isothiocyanate Complexes with 4'-Aryl-Substituted 2,2':6',2″-Terpyridines and N,N-Dimethylacetamide as Molecular Ligands

New complexes of neptunyl(V) isothiocyanate with 4'-aryl-substituted 2,2':6',2″-terpyridines (Terpy) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) were obtained: [(NpO₂)(4'-Ph-Terpy)(DMA)(NCS)]·DMA, [(NpO₂)(4'-(4-(CF₃)C₆H₄)-Terpy)(DMA)(NCS)]·2H₂O·DMA, [(NpO₂)(4'-(3-BrC₆H₄)-Terpy)(DMA)(NCS)]·DMA, and [(NpO₂)(4'-(2-(COOH)C₆H₄)-Terpy)(DMA)(NCS)]·DMA. The structures of the compounds were determined with X-ray diffraction analysis. The neptunium coordination polyhedra were found to be pentagonal bipyramids with O atoms of the NpO₂ groups in the apical positions and the equatorial planes formed by three N atoms of the terpyridine ligand, a N atom of the isothiocyanate anion, and an O atom of DMA. The influence of the substituents of the Ar group on the crystal structure is discussed. The IR spectra contain well-resolved bands of characteristic vibrations of all groups in the complex. The electronic absorption spectra are typical for neptunium(V) complexes and contain an intense narrow absorption band belonging to an f-f transition with a maximum of 988 nm and several long-wave satellites of lower intensity. The substituted terpyridines were shown to be efficient for the extraction of various valence forms of neptunium from the isothiocyanate solutions.
