Differentiation of Amaranthus Species and Estimation of Their Polyphenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Potential Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Amaranthus species are rich in protein, fiber, minerals, and other nutrients and have various health benefits. The genus is taxonomically difficult due to the high phenotypic plasticity and the spontaneous interspecies introgression and hybridization between species. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibilities of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the taxonomic differentiation of some of the species common in Bulgaria and estimate their polyphenolic compounds. Tested samples were collected from six Bulgarian floristic regions: Amaranthus albus L., A. blitum L., A. deflexus L., A. hybridus L., and A. retroflexus L. were studied. The NIR spectra of dried and ground leaf and stalk samples were measured by NIRQuest 512 (region 900-1700 nm) using a fiber-optic probe. Soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) was used to develop the classification models and PLS regression for the quantitative determination of their polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant potential. There were statistically significant differences in the measured values of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant potential among the tested species. NIRS allowed an accurate determination of these parameters. The performance of developed SIMCA models for the discrimination of species was very high. The precision of determination varied from 98.2 to 100%, and the total accuracy was 98.34%. The results show successful differentiation of the taxonomic species.

Combination of near-infrared spectroscopy with Wasserstein generative adversarial networks for rapidly detecting raw material quality for formula products

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has emerged as a key technique for rapid quality detection owing to its fast, non-destructive, and eco-friendly characteristics. However, its practical implementation within the formulation industry is challenging owing to insufficient data, which renders model fitting difficult. The complexity of acquiring spectra and spectral reference values results in limited spectral data, aggravating the problem of low generalization, which diminishes model performance. To address this problem, we introduce what we believe to be a novel approach combining NIRS with Wasserstein generative adversarial networks (WGANs). Specifically, spectral data are collected from representative samples of raw material provided by a formula enterprise. Then, the WGAN augments the database by generating synthetic data resembling the raw spectral data. Finally, we establish various prediction models using the PLSR, SVR, LightGBM, and XGBoost algorithms. Experimental results show the NIRS-WGAN method significantly improves the performance of prediction models, with R2 and RMSE of 0.949 and 1.415 for the chemical components of sugar, respectively, and 0.922 and 0.243 for nicotine. The proposed framework effectively enhances the predictive capabilities of various models, addressing the issue caused by limited training data in NIRS prediction tasks.

Concise Cascade Methods for Transgenic Rice Seed Discrimination using Spectral Phenotyping

Currently, the presence of genetically modified (GM) organisms in agro-food markets is strictly regulated by enacted legislation worldwide. It is essential to ensure the traceability of these transgenic products for food safety, consumer choice, environmental monitoring, market integrity, and scientific research. However, detecting the existence of GM organisms involves a combination of complex, time-consuming, and labor-intensive techniques requiring high-level professional skills. In this paper, a concise and rapid pipeline method to identify transgenic rice seeds was proposed on the basis of spectral imaging technologies and the deep learning approach. The composition of metabolome across 3 rice seed lines containing the cry1Ab/cry1Ac gene was compared and studied, substantiating the intrinsic variability induced by these GM traits. Results showed that near-infrared and terahertz spectra from different genotypes could reveal the regularity of GM metabolic variation. The established cascade deep learning model divided GM discrimination into 2 phases including variety classification and GM status identification. It could be found that terahertz absorption spectra contained more valuable features and achieved the highest accuracy of 97.04% for variety classification and 99.71% for GM status identification. Moreover, a modified guided backpropagation algorithm was proposed to select the task-specific characteristic wavelengths for further reducing the redundancy of the original spectra. The experimental validation of the cascade discriminant method in conjunction with spectroscopy confirmed its viability, simplicity, and effectiveness as a valuable tool for the detection of GM rice seeds. This approach also demonstrated its great potential in distilling crucial features for expedited transgenic risk assessment.

Identification of Transgenic Agricultural Products and Foods Using NIR Spectroscopy and Hyperspectral Imaging: A Review

Spectroscopy and its imaging techniques are now popular methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis in fields such as agricultural products and foods, and combined with various chemometric methods. In fact, this is the application basis for spectroscopy and spectral imaging techniques in other fields such as genetics and transgenic monitoring. To date, there has been considerable research using spectroscopy and its imaging techniques (especially NIR spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging) for the effective identification of agricultural products and foods. There have been few comprehensive reviews that cover the use of spectroscopic and imaging methods in the identification of genetically modified organisms. Therefore, this paper focuses on the application of NIR spectroscopy and its imaging techniques (including NIR spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging techniques) in transgenic agricultural product and food detection and compares them with traditional detection methods. A large number of studies have shown that the application of NIR spectroscopy and imaging techniques in the detection of genetically modified foods is effective when compared to conventional approaches such as polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Discrimination of Brassica juncea Varieties Using Visible Near-Infrared (Vis-NIR) Spectroscopy and Chemometrics Methods

Brown mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) is an important oilseed crop that is mostly used to produce edible oils, industrial oils, modified lipids and biofuels in subtropical nations. Due to its higher level of commercial use, the species has a huge array of varieties/cultivars. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy in combination with multiple chemometric approaches for distinguishing four B. juncea varieties in Korea. The spectra from the leaves of four different growth stages of four B. juncea varieties were measured in the Vis-NIR range of 325–1075 nm with a stepping of 1.5 nm in reflectance mode. For effective discrimination, the spectral data were preprocessed using three distinct approaches, and eight different chemometric analyses were utilized. After the detection of outliers, the samples were split into two groups, one serving as a calibration set and the other as a validation set. When numerous preprocessing and chemometric approaches were applied for discriminating, the combination of standard normal variate and deep learning had the highest classification accuracy in all the growth stages achieved up to 100%. Similarly, few other chemometrics also yielded 100% classification accuracy, namely, support vector machine, generalized linear model, and the random forest. Of all the chemometric preprocessing methods, Savitzky–Golay filter smoothing provided the best and most convincing discrimination. The findings imply that chemometric methods combined with handheld Vis-NIR spectroscopy can be utilized as an efficient tool for differentiating B. juncea varieties in the field in all the growth stages.

Sustainable amelioration of fly ash dumps linking bio-energy plantation, bioremediation and amendments: A review

Disposal of fly ash in dumps is posing serious environmental problem causing air pollution, groundwater contamination, and loss of valuable land making it unproductive dumpsites. Cultivation of plants using bioremediation technique is looked upon as one of the sustainable remedial solution to these fly ash dumpsites. In recent years, researches on the plantation of bio-energy crops over the fly ash dumpsites is creating renewed interest, as it serves remediation along with distinct energy outcomes creating a win-win situation. The issue of the slow growth of plants, due to lack of nutrients and microbial activities is being resolved through advances in bioremediation research done in conjunction with organic matter, microbial inoculants, and inclusion of wastewater. New researches are being done with different plants and microbes in the matrix combination and use wastewater to supplement nutrients requirement to find eco-friendly & sustainable solutions. The present paper critically reviews the research on bioremediation and amendments with specific to bio-energy plantation on fly ash dumps.

Monitoring Time-Non-Stable Surfaces Using Mobile NIR DLP Spectroscopy

In recent years, Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has increased in popularity and usage for different purposes, including the detection of particular substances, evaluation of food quality, etc. Usually, mobile handheld NIR spectroscopy devices are used on the surfaces of different materials, very often organic ones. The features of these materials change as they age, leading to changes in their spectra. The ageing process often occurs only slowly, i.e., corresponding reflection spectra can be analyzed each hour or at an even longer interval. This paper undertakes the problem of analyzing surfaces of non-stable, rapidly changing materials such as waxes or adhesive materials. To obtain their characteristic spectra, NIR spectroscopy using a Digital Light Projection (DLP) spectrometer was used. Based on earlier experiences and the current state of the art, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used to process spectral sequences to proceed with an enormous value of spectra gathered during measurements.

Vis-NIR Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Methods for the Discrimination of Transgenic Brassica napus L. and Their Hybrids with B. juncea

The rapid advancement of genetically modified (GM) technology over the years has raised concerns about the safety of GM crops and foods for human health and the environment. Gene flow from GM crops may be a threat to the environment. Therefore, it is critical to develop reliable, rapid, and low-cost technologies for detecting and monitoring the presence of GM crops and crop products. Here, we used visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy to distinguish between GM and non-GM Brassica napus, B. juncea, and F1 hybrids (B. juncea X GM B. napus). The Vis-NIR spectra were preprocessed with different preprocessing methods, namely normalization, standard normal variate, and Savitzky–Golay. Both raw and preprocessed spectra were used in combination with eight different chemometric methods for the effective discrimination of GM and non-GM plants. The standard normal variate and support vector machine combination was determined to be the most accurate model in the discrimination of GM, non-GM, and hybrid plants among the many combinations (99.4%). The use of deep learning in combination with Savitzky–Golay resulted in 99.1% classification accuracy. According to the findings, it is concluded that handheld Vis-NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric analyses could be used to distinguish between GM and non-GM B. napus, B. juncea, and F1 hybrids.
