Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are widely distributed in natural water and pose as major pollutants in aquatic environments. In this study, heat-activated persulfate (HPT) and ultraviolet-activated persulfate treatments (UPT) were employed to investigate the influence of sulfate radical (SO4-•)-based advanced oxidation process (SAOPs) on TWP physicochemical properties and to clarify their ecotoxic effects in laboratory-level studies. Results showed that the specific surface areas of TWPs increased after UPT but decreased after HPT. In terms of chemical properties, the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of TWPs was more evident in UPT than that in HPT. The atrazine (ATZ) adsorption capacity of TWPs after HPT and UPT was increased compared with the untreated TWPs. Atrazine adsorbed by TWPs was easily resolved and released in artificial intestinal fluid (1.89-2.08 mg/g) and artificial gastric fluid (1.60-2.04 mg/g) conditions. Acute toxicity experiments of Photobacterium phosphoreum and SEM-EDS detection results suggested that various heavy metals (e.g., Zn2+, Cu2+) in the TWPs would be released into the water system in SAOPs. ATZ released from TWPs that adsorbed ATZ herbicide, rather than TWPs themselves, had a negative effect on aquatic plant growth (e.g., C. vulgaris). The leaching solution of oxidized TWPs (after HPT and UPT) showed a more significant inhibition effect on the zebrafish survival compared with that of untreated TWPs, which was possibly caused by the generation of oxidation byproducts such as N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone.

Sodium Alginate-g-acrylamide/acrylic Acid Hydrogels Obtained by Electron Beam Irradiation for Soil Conditioning. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 24:ijms24010104. Abstract
Being both a cause and a victim of water scarcity and nutrient deficiency, agriculture as a sustainable livelihood is dependent now on finding new suport solutions. Biodegradable hydrogels usage as soil conditioners may be one of the most effective solutions for irrigation efficiency improvement, reducing the quantity of soluble fertilizers per crop cycle and combating pathogens, due to their versatility assured by both obtaining method and properties. The first goal of the work was the obtaining by electron beam irradiation and characterization of some Sodium Alginate-g-acrylamide/acrylic Acid hydrogels, the second one being the investigation of their potential use as a soil conditioner by successive experiments of absorption and release of two different aqueous nutrient solutions. Alginate-g-acrylamide/acrylic Acid hydrogels were obtained by electron beam irradiation using the linear accelerator ALID 7 at 5.5 MeV at the irradiation doses of 5 and 6 kGy. For this were prepared monomeric solutions that contained 1 and 2% sodium alginate, acrylamide and acrylic acid in ratios of 1:1 and 1.5:1, respectively, for the obtaining of materials with hybrid properties derived from natural and synthetic components. Physical, chemical, structural and morphological characteristics of the obtained hydrogels were investigated by specific analysis using swelling, diffusion and network studies and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Four successive absorption and release experiments of some synthetic and natural aqueous solutions with nutrients were performed.

Influence of Clones on Relationship between Natural Rubber and Size of Rubber Particles in Latex. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms23168880. [PMID: 36012145 PMCID: PMC9408627 DOI: 10.3390/ijms23168880] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/12/2022] [Revised: 07/27/2022] [Accepted: 08/02/2022] [Indexed: 11/20/2022] Open
Abstract
IAN873, Dongfang93114 and Reyan73397, created through vegetative propagation for their high yield and excellent cold resistance, are major clones planted in China. In this work, latexes with rubber particles of the same size from these clones are separated from fresh natural rubber latex, and corresponding rubber films are prepared from each latex. The structure and components of each film are measured. This indicates that the characteristics of the rubbers obtained from latexes with similar particle sizes show some resembling trends among different clones, while for specific samples, those characteristics vary depending on the clone. The molecular weight is generally highest in IAN873 and lowest in Reyan73397. Rubber chains in small rubber particles are longer, and large rubber particles show a wider molecular weight distribution. The gel content of every sample from Reyan73397 is lower than the other two clones. The nitrogen content increases with the size of rubber particles in all clones. The ester content of small rubber particles in IAN873 and Reyan73397 is almost zero. Large rubber particles have more branching points formed via esters. This study provides a new perspective on the influence of clones on the relationship between characteristics of natural rubber and the size of rubber particles in natural rubber latex.
