Habitat Preferences and Trophic Position of Brachydiplax chalybea flavovittata Ris, 1911 (Insecta: Odonata) Larvae in Youngsan River Wetlands of South Korea

An Evolutionary Strategy for Spawning Habitat Selection by Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa

In this study, we hypothesized that the limited geographical distribution of Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa in South Korea is closely related to the local abundance of their preferred spawning habitats. Eggs of P. tenuicorpa were most frequently observed in cracks smaller than 5 cm, followed by the nests of other fish, such as Coreoperca herzi. Although eggs of P. tenuicorpa were also found in cracks larger than 6 cm, most of them were consumed or damaged by other fish. However, the number of P. tenuicorpa eggs spawned in cracks smaller than 5 cm remained similar to the number of eggs at the time of initial spawning, even after 9 days. The strong preference of P. tenuicorpa for cracks smaller than 5 cm was found to influence the geographical distribution of P. tenuicorpa in South Korea. In the upper reaches of the Han River, the ratio of cracks smaller than 5 cm is higher than that in the Geum River and in the Nakdong River, which contributes to the stable population growth of P. tenuicorpa there. In the future, management strategies to maintain/restore cracks smaller than 5 cm should be reviewed for the preservation of this endemic fish in South Korea.

Invasion and Dispersion of the Exotic Species Procambarus clarkii (Decapoda Cambaridae) in Yeongsan River Basin, South Korea

Simple Summary

Currently, the dispersion of the exotic species Procambarus clarkii in the Yeongsan River basin is a major issue in South Korea, where the majority of domestic crayfish occur in upstream river sections, while P. clarkii is mainly abundant in the middle and lower river reaches. In 2018, the species was initially observed only in the Jiseok Stream, a tributary stream of the Yeongsan River. Since then, the species has gradually dispersed in the Yeongsan River basin, and by 2021, the species was recorded in most of the main basin and tributary streams. The larvae of P. clarkii were abundant in areas with dense aquatic plants, whereas adults inhabited areas with silt/clay cover. However, P. clarkii appears to cause little impact on the freshwater ecosystem, despite its extensive dispersion. The species did not utilize native biological communities as food sources and is unlikely to be consumed by predators.

Abstract

The introduction of exotic species negatively affects the distribution and interactions within local biological communities in an ecosystem and can threaten ecosystem health. This study aimed to provide the basic data required to manage P. clarkii in the Yeongsan River basin. We identified the dispersion pattern and evaluated the ecosystem risk of this newly introduced species. The distribution survey investigated Procambarus clarkii populations at 25 sites in the Yeongsan River basin over a four-year period. The initial introduction occurred in Jiseok Stream. The larvae of P. clarkii were most abundant in areas with a dense aquatic plant cover, whereas adults preferred silt/clay areas. The alterations in the water flow by the river refurbishment project (carried out in 2012) increased their preferred habitats and contributed to P. clarkii dispersion. However, stable isotope analysis showed that the dispersion has had little effect on the freshwater ecosystem. The interrelationship between P. clarkii (i.e., larvae and adults) and other biological communities has been limited. Although the rapid dispersion by P. clarkii in the Yeongsan River basin has not impacted the freshwater ecosystem, further ecological information is required on how to manage P. clarkii beyond this early stage of invasion.

Aquatic Macrophytes Determine the Spatial Distribution of Invertebrates in a Shallow Reservoir

Aquatic macrophytes determine the physical structure of many microhabitats in water and strongly influence the distribution of various aquatic animals. In this study, we analyzed the main microhabitat characteristics that affected the spatial distribution of invertebrates in shallow wetlands of South Korea (Jangcheok Reservoir). Environmental variables, macrophyte biomass, and invertebrate groups were used to analyze invertebrate distribution using a self-organizing map (SOM). Thirteen invertebrate groups were mapped onto the SOM, and each group was compared with the distribution of environmental variables and macrophyte biomass. Based on a U-matrix, five clusters were categorized according to Euclidean distance on the SOM. Invertebrate groups were closely related to macrophyte biomass. In particular, Lymnaeidae, Physidae, Viviparidae, Ecnomidae, and Hydrophilidae were abundant in quadrats with a high cover of Paspalum distichum and Nelumbo nucifera. Bithyniidae and Coenagrionidae were strongly associated with Trapa japonica and Hydrocharis dubia, whereas Planorbidae, Corduliidae, and Hydrophilidae were abundant with a high cover of Typha orientalis. Similar habitat preferences were found in a survey of gastropod distribution on the surface of each macrophyte species. The results clearly indicated that invertebrate distribution clusters were related to the spatial distribution of aquatic macrophytes in a shallow wetland.

Effect of Microhabitat Structure on the Distribution of an Endangered Fish, Coreoperca kawamebari (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) in the Geum River, South Korea

Macrophytes play a major role in the structuring of aquatic environments and may influence the distribution and feeding habits of fish species. We explored the microhabitat characteristics influencing the spatial distribution of newly discovered Coreoperca kawamebari (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) in the upstream reaches of the Geum River. Out of 21 study sites, C. kawamebari was found in 10 sites, and its abundance was strongly positively correlated with “vegetated” microhabitats, especially those covered by elodeids (e.g., Ceratophyllum demersum). The utilization of elodeids by the piscivores fish, C. kawamebari, may limit the abundance of other native fishes, and stable isotope analysis also showed that C. kawamebari is likely to consume other fish species. However, the influence of other fish species on C. kawamebari is assumed to be small, considering that C. kawamebari is a latent predator. Although the abundance of other fish was low within the preferred microhabitat of C. kawamebari, other species were abundant in each site where C. kawamebari was dominant. From this finding, we conclude that the successful settlement of C. kawamebari in the upper section of the Geum River can be attributed to their habitat preferences. Although the elodeids favored by C. kawamebari generally have difficulty developing in the upstream section, the habitat creation by humans has contributed to the stable settlement of new fish species.
