Participation of Polymer Materials in the Structure of Piezoelectric Composites

This review explores the integration of polymer materials into piezoelectric composite structures, focusing on their application in sensor technologies, and wearable electronics. Piezoelectric composites combining ceramic phases like BaTiO3, KNN, or PZT with polymers such as PVDF exhibit significant potential due to their enhanced flexibility, processability, and electrical performance. The synergy between the high piezoelectric sensitivity of ceramics and the mechanical flexibility of polymers enables the development of advanced materials for biomedical devices, energy conversion, and smart infrastructure applications. This review discusses the evolution of lead-free ceramics, the challenges in improving polymer-ceramic interfaces, and innovations like 3D printing and surface functionalization, which enhance charge transfer and material durability. It also covers the effects of radiation on these materials, particularly in nuclear applications, and strategies to enhance radiation resistance. The review concludes that polymer materials play a critical role in advancing piezoelectric composite technologies by addressing environmental and functional challenges, paving the way for future innovations.

Radiation Processing of Styrene-isoprene-styrene/Poly(ε-caprolactone) Blends

The irradiation consequences on styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) blends are discussed starting from the oxidation initiation. Three characterization methods: chemiluminescence, differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR spectroscopy are applied. The differences that exist between the two components are revealed, when the oxidation rates of the inspected formulas depend on the blending proportion and the degradation conditions. The relevant activation energies characterizing the oxidation strength as well as the kinetic parameters of degradation during the accelerated damaging of blended polymers are related to the inhibition protection of PCL on the faster oxidation of SIS. The interaction between mixed components is revealed by the structural modifications simultaneously accompanied by the competition of formation and decay of radicals.

Dual Modification of Starch by Physical Methods Based on Corona Electrical Discharge and Ionizing Radiation: Synergistic Impact on Rheological Behavior

The present paper focuses on evaluating the synergistic effects of dual modification with corona electric discharge (CED) and electron beam irradiation (EBI) on the rheological behavior of starch. Combined treatments were applied successively (CED/EBI and EBI/CED) and compared with single treatments. The outcomes showed that the rheological features of starch were altered by the dual modification in correlation with the irradiation dose mainly as a result of radiation-induced degradation. Decreases in apparent viscosity were described by exponential-like-models according to the order of application of the treatment sequences. The mathematical models allowed the estimation of the irradiation doses for which the viscosity decreased by e times for the dual modified starches (3.3 ± 1.3 kGy for CED/EBI and 5.6 ± 0.5 kGy for EBI/CED, respectively) and the fraction (f) of 0.47 ± 0.10 corresponding to starch granule considered to be affected by plasma. Both dual treatments yielded a synergistic effect, regardless of the order of application of the treatment sequences, being more effective in decreasing starch apparent viscosity than single EBI. However, synergism evaluation proved that the use of plasma as a pre-treatment to irradiation processing could provide benefits up to 20 kGy. These findings support the practical goals of technologists with valuable information that may facilitate or simplify the experimental design of starch dual modification with plasma and ionizing radiation.
