The Structure of Cognitive Abilities and Associations with Problem Behaviors in Early Adolescence: An Analysis of Baseline Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study

Differentiation of executive functions during adolescence: Converging evidence from behavioral, genetic and neural data

Executive functions (EF) have been found to differentiate from a single component to three distinct components (i.e., updating, shifting, and inhibition) during development. However, there is still much debate regarding when such differentiation takes place and biological evidence is needed. Here we used the longitudinal and multimodality data from the ABCD study to address this question at two age groups (9-10 and 13-14). Three tasks (i.e., List, Card and Flanker tasks) were used to represent the three EF components respectively at baseline, and two tasks (Flanker and List) at 4th year follow up. Genes associated with each task were identified by whole genome and transcriptome association analyses and were then used for genetic similarity calculation; structural and functional brain indices related to each task were identified and used to assess neural similarity. We found that at baseline (9-10 years old), the three EF components were behaviorally highly inter-correlated and were associated with many of the same genes and the same brain regions. Four years later, the follow-up data (with Flanker and List tasks only) still showed significant but smaller behavioral/genetic/neural similarity. This study is the first to chart the path of EF differentiation during adolescence by combining behavioral, genetic, and neural data, and this approach may be relevant to the study of development of other cognitive abilities.

Beyond Discrete Classifications: A Computational Approach to the Continuum of Cognition and Behavior in Children

Psychiatry is undergoing a shift toward precision medicine, demanding personalized approaches that capture the complexity of cognition and behavior. Here, we introduce a novel referential of four robust, replicable, and generalizable cognitive and behavioral profiles. These were derived from the most prominent pediatric cohort (n=10,843) and validated in two independent cohorts (n=195 and n=271). We demonstrate the profiles' longitudinal stability and consistency with clinical diagnoses while exposing critical discrepancies across parent-reported, youth-reported, and expert-derived diagnoses. Beyond validation, we showcase the real-world utility of our approach by linking profiles to environmental factors, revealing associations between parental influences and youths' cognition and behavior. Our fuzzy profiling framework moves beyond discrete classification, offering a powerful tool to refine psychiatric evaluation and intervention. We provide an open-source framework, enabling researchers and clinicians to fast-track implementation and foster a data-driven, domain-based approach to diagnosis. Our findings advocate for broadening the scope of psychiatric assessment.

Preliminary findings on psychometric properties of the adolescent story stem profile

Introduction

The Adolescent Story Stem Assessment Profile (ASSP) is a newly developed narrative measure aimed at assessing the psychological wellbeing of adolescents. This study investigates the psychometric properties of the ASSP within the British population, with the goal of elucidating its unique strengths and limitations.

Methods

We conducted an exploratory factor analysis on the responses of a community sample of adolescents in the UK (N = 182) to identify the underlying factors that reflect adolescents' internal representations as measured by the ASSP. Following this, we performed a series of analyses on the responses from both the community sample and a high-risk sample of adolescents in care (N = 67) to investigate the psychometric properties of the ASSP.

Results

We demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency, construct reliability, and discriminant validity among adolescents with varying levels of risk factors. The findings suggest that the ASSP is a promising tool for measuring mental health in adolescents, providing an economical and practically accessible method for both preventative and clinical applications.

Discussion

Our results yield critical insights into the complex nature of adolescents' psychological development, highlighting the necessity for tailored measures and interventions that address the diverse psychological needs of this population. Overall, this study represents a significant initial step toward establishing the ASSP as a valuable resource in both research and clinical practice, with implications for future studies aimed at enhancing our understanding of attachment to carers, peer relations, mentalization and affect competences in adolescence. The insights gained from this research underscore the importance of developing assessment tools that are sensitive to the unique psychological experiences of adolescents, ultimately contributing to more effective interventions and support strategies.

Midlife diseases of despair and cardiometabolic risk: testing shared origins in adolescent psychopathology

BACKGROUND

Rising midlife mortality in the United States is largely attributable to 'deaths of despair' (deaths from suicide, drug poisonings, and alcohol-related diseases) and deaths from cardiometabolic conditions. Although despair- and cardiometabolic-related mortality are increasing concurrently, it is unclear whether they share common developmental origins. We tested adolescent psychopathology as a potential common origin of midlife diseases of despair and cardiometabolic risk.

METHODS

Participants (N = 4578) were from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a nationally representative cohort followed from adolescence to early midlife. Adolescent psychopathology included depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, conduct disorder, and ADHD at ages 11-18. Diseases of despair (suicidality, substance misuse, pain, and sleep problems) and cardiometabolic risk (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, high-risk waist circumference, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions) were multi-modally measured at ages 33-43.

RESULTS

At midlife, adolescents who experienced psychopathology exhibited more indicators of despair-related diseases and cardiometabolic risk (IRRs = 1.67 [1.46-1.87] and 1.13 [1.04-1.21], respectively), even after accounting for demographics, adolescent SES, and adolescent cognitive ability. Associations were evident for internalizing and externalizing conditions, and in a dose-response fashion. In mediation analyses, low education explained little of these associations, but early-adult substance use explained 21.5% of psychopathology's association with despair-related diseases. Midlife despair-related diseases and cardiometabolic risk co-occurred within individuals (IRR = 1.12 [1.08-1.16]). Adolescent psychopathology accounted for 8.3% of this co-occurrence, and 16.7% together with adolescent SES and cognitive ability.

CONCLUSIONS

Adolescent psychopathology precedes both diseases of despair and cardiometabolic risk. Prevention and treatment of psychopathology may mitigate multiple causes of poor midlife health, reducing premature mortality.

Modern Assessments of Intelligence Must Be Fair and Equitable

Historically, assessments of human intelligence have been virtually synonymous with practices that contributed to forms of inequality and injustice. As such, modern considerations for assessing human intelligence must focus on equity and fairness. First, we highlight the array of diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns in assessment practices and discuss strategies for addressing them. Next, we define a modern, non-g, emergent view of intelligence using the process overlap theory and argue for its use in improving equitable practices. We then review the empirical evidence, focusing on sub-measures of g to highlight the utility of non-g, emergent models in promoting equity and fairness. We conclude with suggestions for researchers and practitioners.
