Effects of different supplementary cementitious materials on durability and mechanical properties of cement composite - Comprehensive review

Ordinary Portland cement is the highest produced cement type in the world, however its production is high energy consumption means expensive, huge natural resource consumptive, and creating high environmental pollution. Hence many researchers studied to reduce the effect of ordinary Portland cement by substituting artificial and natural supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) commonly in a concrete/mortar mixture. However, the comprehensive effect of different SCMs on various properties of cement composite materials are not well known. So the present study sought to review the effect of different natural and artificial SCMs on the durability and mechanical properties of cement composites, especially due to their doses, types, chemical composition, and physical properties. Hence the review shows that many SCMs used by literatures from different places satisfy ASTM replacement standard based on their chemical compositions. Also, the review indicated as adding 5-20% of different SCMs positively affect mechanical properties, durability, and microstructures of the cement composite materials, specifically as most researchers found isolately adding of 15% SCMs such as bentonite, kaolin, and biomass, 20% addition of volcanic ash and 10% employment of fly ash, silica fume, and zeolite to the cement composites achieves the most optimum compressive and split tensile strength. These observations reveal that most natural pozzolana can more replace cement to give optimum strength, hence can more reduce energy consumption, production cost, and environmental pollution comes due to cement production. Furthermore, most researchers found employing different SCMs generally improves durability, however there is a limited study on the effect of silica fume on water absorption and acidic attack resistance of cementitious materials. Therefore, it is recommended that future research should also focus more to know the effect of silica fume on the durability of cement composites.

Orthogonal Experimental Study on Concrete Properties of Machine-Made Tuff Sand

Machine-made sand instead of natural sand has become an inevitable choice for the sustainable development of the concrete industry. Orthogonal experiment and grey correlation analysis were used to investigate the performance of machine-made tuff sand concrete. The optimal concrete mix ratio of machine-made sand was obtained by orthogonal test and its working performance was verified. Grey correlation analysis was applied to compare the factors affecting the mechanical properties of the machine-made sand concrete. The test results show that the sand rate has the greatest degree of influence on slump and slump expansion. The mineral admixture has the greatest effect on the 7-day compressive strength of the concrete. Additionally, the water–cement ratio has the greatest influence on the 28-day compressive strength. The mechanical and working properties of the machine-made sand concrete reach the optimum condition when the mineral admixture is 20%, the sand rate is 46%, the stone powder content is 10% and the water–cement ratio is 0.30. Comparing different fine aggregate concretes of similar quality, we conclude that the mechanical and working properties of tuff sand concrete and limestone sand concrete and river sand concrete are similar. The compressive strengths of the mechanism concrete show the greatest correlation with roughness and the least correlation with stone powder content. The stone powder content has almost no effect on the compressive strength of concrete when the stone powder content does not exceed a certain range. The results of the study point out the direction for the quality control of concrete with machine-made sand.

Effect of Magnetized Water on the Mechanical and Durability Properties of Concrete Block Pavers

In this research, the effect of magnetized water on the mechanical and durability behavior of concrete block pavers was investigated. For this purpose, a total of five mixes were prepared with water that passed through a permanent magnetic field 10, 20, 40, and 80 times at a constant speed of 2.25 m/s. Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, resistance to sulfuric acid attack, water absorption tests, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses were conducted. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength test results showed a significant positive effect of using magnetized water. The remaining tests also revealed that using magnetized water increases the resistance of concrete block pavers to sulfuric acid attack and decreases their water absorption.

Test Granular Materials Failure Using Bi-Directional Simple Shear Apparatus: A Review

As widely used natural granular materials, sand and clay have been extensively studied. However, its physical and mechanical behavior, such as the shear behavior and deformation under loading, are still not clear. This is due to the limitation of the testing facility, in which most of the testing apparatus can only add one directional shear stress. The in situ stress condition of soils is usually more complex and has multi-directional shear stress during consolidation and shearing. A bi-directional simple shear apparatus can better replicate the in situ stress condition and has been used by a few researchers. This review summarized the testing facilities and recent advances in bi-directional simple shear testing.

Effect of Nano-CuO on Engineering and Microstructure Properties of Fibre-Reinforced Mortars Incorporating Metakaolin: Experimental and Numerical Studies

In this study, the effects of nano-CuO (NC) on engineering properties of fibre-reinforced mortars incorporating metakaolin (MK) were investigated. The effects of polypropylene fibre (PP) were also examined. A total of twenty-six mixtures were prepared. The experimental results were compared with numerical results obtained by adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and Primal Estimated sub-GrAdient Solver for SVM (Pegasos) algorithm. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was also employed to investigate the microstructure of the cement matrix. The mechanical test results showed that both compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortars decreased with the increase of MK content, however the strength values increased significantly with increasing NC content in the mixture. The water absorption of samples decreased remarkably with increasing NC particles in the mixture. When PP fibres were added, the strengths of cement mortars were further enhanced accompanied with lower water absorption values. The addition of 2 wt % and 3 wt % nanoparticles in cement mortar led to a positive contribution to strength and resistance to water absorption. Mixture of PP-MK10NC3 indicated the best results for both compressive and flexural strengths at 28 and 90 days. SEM images illustrated that the morphology of cement matrix became more porous with increasing MK content, but the porosity reduced with the inclusion of NC. In addition, it is evident from the SEM images that more cement hydration products adhered onto the surface of fibres, which would improve the fibre-matrix interface. The numerical results obtained by ANFIS and Pegasos were close to the experimental results. The value of R² obtained for each data set (validate, test and train) was higher than 0.90 and the values of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and the relative root mean squared error (PRMSE) were near zero. The ANFIS and Pegasos models can be used to predict the mechanical properties and water absorptions of fibre-reinforced mortars with MK and NC.
