Properties of Composites Based on Recycled Polypropylene and Silico-Aluminous Industrial Waste

There is an ever-growing interest in recovering and recycling waste materials due to their hazardous nature to the environment and human health. Recently, especially since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, disposable medical face masks have been a major source of pollution, hence the rise in studies being conducted on how to recover and recycle this waste. At the same time, fly ash, an aluminosilicate waste, is being repurposed in various studies. The general approach to recycling these materials is to process and transform them into novel composites with potential applications in various industries. This work aims to investigate the properties of composites based on silico-aluminous industrial waste (ashes) and recycled polypropylene from disposable medical face masks and to create usefulness for these materials. Polypropylene/ash composites were prepared through melt processing methods, and samples were analyzed to get a general overview of the properties of these composites. Results showed that the polypropylene recycled from face masks used together with silico-aluminous ash can be processed through industrial melt processing methods and that the addition of only 5 wt% ash with a particle size of less than 90 µm, increases the thermal stability and the stiffness of the polypropylene matrix while maintaining its mechanical strength. Further investigations are needed to find specific applications in some industrial fields.

Enhancing Crystallization and Toughness of Wood Flour/Polypropylene Composites via Matrix Crystalline Modification: A Comparative Study of Two β-Nucleating Agents

Incorporation of short wood fillers such as wood flour (WF) into polypropylene (PP) often results in a marked reduction of toughness, which is one of the main shortcomings for WF/PP composites. This research reports a facile approach to achieve toughening of WF/PP composites via introducing self-assembling β-nucleating agents into PP matrix. The effect of two kinds of nucleating agents, an aryl amide derivative (TMB5) and a rare earth complex (WBG II), at varying concentrations on the crystallization and mechanical properties of WF/PP composites was comparatively investigated. The results showed that both nucleating agents were highly effective in inducing β-crystal for WF/PP, with β-crystal content (k_β) value reaching 0.8 at 0.05 wt% nucleating agent concentration. The incorporation of TMB or WBG significantly decreased the spherulite size, increased the crystallization temperature and accelerated the crystallization process of WF/PP. As a result of PP crystalline modification, the toughness of composites was significantly improved. Through introducing 0.3 wt% TMB or WBG, the notched impact strength and strain at break of WF/PP increased by approximately 28% and 40%, respectively. Comparatively, although WF/PP-WBG had slightly higher K_β value than WF/PP-TMB at the same concentration, WF/PP/TMB exhibited more uniform crystalline morphology with smaller spherulites. Furthermore, the tensile strength and modulus of WF/PP-TMB were higher than WF/PP-WBG. This matrix crystalline modification strategy provides a promising route to prepare wood filler/thermoplastic composites with improved toughness and accelerated crystallization.

Developing a cerium lactate antibacterial nucleating agent for multifunctional polylactic acid packaging film

With the rapid development of the packaging industry, people have high requirements for the functionality of packaging materials. As a representative biodegradable packaging material, polylactic acid (PLA) still has some problems. Multifunctional additives in PLA are an effective modification method. In this paper, cerium lactate (Ce-LA) was synthesized by a precipitation method and integrated into PLA to prepare a functional PLA composite. The results showed that Ce-LA not only significantly improved the crystallinity but also imparted antibacterial ability to PLA. When the concentration of Ce-LA was 0.9 %, the crystallinity of PLA reached 39.35 %, which was 77 % higher than that of pure PLA. When the addition of Ce-LA was 1.8 %, the antibacterial rates of PLA against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli reached 93 % and 85 %, respectively. This study provides a beneficial solution for the development of PLA packaging materials with high crystallinity and antibacterial properties.
