Plasma Treating Mixed Metal Oxides to Improve Oxidative Performance via Defect Generation

Enhancing Titanium Disk Performance through In-Pack Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment

While titanium dental implants have already been clinically established, ongoing research is continuously being conducted to advance the fields of osseointegration and bacterial resistance, seeking further improvements in these areas. In this study, we introduce an innovative method for treating titanium surfaces within tightly sealed packaging. Specifically, titanium discs, enclosed in surgical-grade packaging, underwent treatment using cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). The surfaces were thoroughly characterized in terms of wettability, crystalline structure, and chemical composition. Hemocompatibility analyses were conducted using blood diluted in sodium citrate (1:9) exposed to titanium discs for 30 min inside a CO2 incubator at 37 °C. Subsequently, various blood parameters were evaluated, including prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and platelet adhesion. Microbiological analyses were also performed using Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) for 4 h at 37 °C. The treatment with CAP Jet resulted in a reduction in contact angle without causing any changes in the crystalline structure. No statistically significant differences were observed in the blood parameters. The plasma-treated samples exhibited lower PT and APTT values compared to those of the control group. The surfaces treated with CAP Jet showed increased platelet activation, platelet density, and thrombus formation when compared with the untreated samples. Moreover, the treated surfaces demonstrated lower bacterial colony formation compared with other surfaces.

Electrochemical Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion Enabled by Carbon-Decoration of Ni─GaOOH Synthesized via Plasma-Assisted CO2 Reduction

The release of nitrates into the environment leads to contaminated soil and water that poses a health risk to humans and animals. Due to the transition to renewable energy-based technologies, an electrochemical approach is an emerging option that can selectively produce valuable ammonia from nitrate sources. However, traditional metal-based electrocatalysts often suffer from low nitrate adsorption that reduces NH3  production rates. Here, a Ni-GaOOH-C/Ga electrocatalyst for electrochemical nitrate conversion into NH3 is synthesized via a low energy atmospheric-pressure plasma process that reduces CO2  into highly dispersed activated carbon on dispersed Ni─GaOOH particles produced from a liquid metal Ga─Ni alloy precursor. Nitrate conversion rates of up to 26.3 µg h-1  mg-1 cat  are achieved with good stability of up to 20 h. Critically, the presence of carbon centers is central to improved performance where both Ni─C and NiO─C interfaces act as NO3-  adsorption and reduction centers during the reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the NiO─C and Ni─C reaction sites reduce the Gibbs free energy required for NO3-  reduction to NH3  compared to NiO and Ni. Importantly, catalysts without carbon centers do not produce NH3 , emphasizing the unique effects of incorporating carbon nanoparticles into the electrocatalyst.

Synthesis of Surface-Functionalized Molybdenum Disulfide Nanomaterials for Efficient Adsorption and Deep Profiling of the Human Plasma Proteome by Data-Independent Acquisition

Blood is one of the most important clinical samples for protein biomarker discovery, as it provides rich physiological and pathological information and is easy to obtain with low invasiveness. However, the discovery of protein biomarkers in the blood by mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomic strategies has been shown to be highly challenging due to the particularly large concentration range of proteins and the strong interference by the high-abundant proteins in the blood. Therefore, developing sensitive methods for low-abundant biomarker protein identification is a key issue that has received great attention. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of surface-functionalized magnetic molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) for the large-scale adsorption of low-abundant plasma proteins and deep profiling by MS. MoS₂ nanomaterials resulted in the coverage of more than 3400 proteins (including a single-peptide hit) in a single LC-MS analysis without peptide prefractionation using pooled plasma samples, which were five times more than those obtained by the direct analysis of the plasma proteome. A detection limit in the low ng L^-1 range was obtained, which is rare compared with previous reports.

Advances in scientific literature mining for interpreting materials characterization

Using synchrotron light sources, such as the National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory, scientists in fields as diverse as physics, biology, and materials science, identify the atomic structure, chemical composition, or other important properties of varied specimens. x-ray spectroscopy from light sources is particularly valuable for materials research with vast information available about reference spectra in the scientific literature. However, as the technique is applicable to many science domains, searching for information about select x-ray spectroscopy spectra is impeded by the sheer number of publications. Moreover, useful information about the context of an experiment or figures presented in papers can be buried among the details, which takes time to assess. This work presents a scientific literature mining system that supports data acquisition, information extraction, and user interaction for referencing x-ray spectra identification and spectral interpretation. The goal is to provide efficient access to useful spectral data to researchers who may spend only a few days at a synchrotron light source. With this system, users browse a classification tree for papers arranged according to x-ray spectroscopic methods, chemical elements, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy edges. Relevant figures are extracted with sentences from the paper that explain them, known as ‘figure explanatory text.’ Notably, this system focuses on semantic aspects (logical analysis) to find figure explanatory text using deep contextualized word embeddings techniques and contains an interface to obtain labeled data from domain experts that is used to evaluate and improve the model.

Plasma-Induced Catalyst Support Defects for the Photothermal Methanation of Carbon Dioxide

The presence of defects in a catalyst support is known to benefit catalytic activity. In this work, a He-plasma treatment-based strategy for introducing and stabilising defects on a Ni/TiO₂ catalyst for photothermal CO₂ hydrogenation was established. The impact of pretreatment step sequence—which comprised He-plasma treatment and reduction/passivation—on defect generation and stabilisation within the support was evaluated. Characterisation of the Ni/TiO₂ catalysts indicated that defects created in the TiO₂ support during the initial plasma treatment stage were then stabilised by the reduction/passivation process, (P-R)Ni/TiO₂. Conversely, performing reduction/passivation first, (R-P)Ni/TiO₂, invoked a resistance to subsequent defect formation upon plasma treatment and consequently, poorer photothermal catalytic activity. The plasma treatment altered the metal-support interaction and ease of catalyst reduction. Under photothermal conditions, (P-R)Ni/TiO₂ reached the highest methane production in 75 min, while (R-P)Ni/TiO₂ required 165 min. Decoupling the impacts of light and heat indicated thermal dominance of the reaction with CO₂ conversion observed from 200 °C onwards. Methane was the primary product with carbon monoxide detected at 350 °C (~2%) and 400 °C (~5%). Overall, the findings demonstrate the importance of pretreatment step sequence when utilising plasma treatment to generate active defect sites in a catalyst support.
