Tire-Road Contact Area on Asphalt Concrete Pavement and Its Relationship with the Skid Resistance

Pavement Texture-Friction Relationship Establishment via Image Analysis Methods

Pavement surface texture is one of the prevailing factors for friction realization on pavement surfaces. In this paper, an overview of pavement texture properties related to the pavement frictional response is given. Image analysis methods used for pavement texture characterization are thoroughly analyzed together with their potential for the establishment of a pavement texture–friction relationship. Digital pavement surface models derived from photogrammetry or laser scanning methods enable the extraction of texture parameters comparable to the ones acquired by common pavement surface measuring techniques. This paper shows the results of a preliminary small-scale research study of the pavement texture–friction relationship. This research was performed in a laboratory which produced asphalt samples, primarily to analyze the potential of developing a methodology for the digital pavement texture model setup. Furthermore, the relationship between selected 2D texture parameters calculated from the digital texture model and measured friction coefficient expressed as SRT value was analyzed. A significant correlation was established for standard texture indicator mean profile depth (MPD) and SRT values (R = 0.81). Other texture parameters showed moderate correlation with the frictional response of the surface, with absolute values of correlation coefficients varying from 0.7 to 0.75. A further analysis of this relationship will be performed by inclusion of other texture parameters that can be determined from the digital texture model acquired by the established methodology.

The Influence of Aeolian Sand on the Anti-Skid Characteristics of Asphalt Pavement

The influence of sand accumulation on the skid resistance of asphalt pavement was studied. Many scholars have researched the anti-skid performance of conventional asphalt pavements. However, there is a lack of research on the anti-skid performance of desert roads under the condition of sand accumulation. In this study, AC-13 and AC-16 asphalt mixtures were used. The British Pendulum Number (BPN) under different sand accumulations was measured with a pendulum friction coefficient meter, and the Ames engineering texture scanner was used to obtain different sand accumulations. The texture index of asphalt mixture was used to study the macro and micro texture of asphalt pavement under different amounts of sand accumulation, and the degree of influence of different particle sizes on BPN was obtained through gray correlation analysis. The test results show that the presence of aeolian sand has a significant impact on the macro and micro texture of the asphalt pavement and will cause the anti-skid performance to decrease. Moreover, there is an apparent positive linear correlation between the road surface texture index and BPN. The research results may provide reference and reference for the design and maintenance of desert highways.

A Comparative Study on Skid Resistance of Concrete Pavements Differing in Texturing Technique

The paper presents a comparison of the skid resistance of concrete pavements textured with different techniques in the process of simulating phenomena occurring in actual road conditions. Tests were carried out on five different texturing methods for concrete pavements: burlap drag (BuD), brush drag (BrD), transverse tining (TT), longitudinal tining (LT) and exposed aggregate concrete (EAC). Changes in the skid resistance were recorded by measurements with a British pendulum tester and a circular texture meter before and during the simulation of the abrasion (1st phase of test) and polishing (2nd phase of test) of specimens using a slab polisher. The results of BPN (British pendulum number) and MPD (mean profile depth) allowed us to determine the influence of microtexture and macrotexture on skid resistance. Analysis of variance showed that the method of texturing concrete pavements has a significant influence on the mean BPN values as well as the MPD parameter at each stage of the test. In order to distinguish homogeneous groups in terms of BPN and MPD levels at the particular stages of the process, the Tukey's HSD (honest significant difference) post-hoc test was performed. It was found that EAC obtained the most favorable results of all the tested pavement types. Due to the high value of the MPD coefficient after the test and the appropriate values of the friction coefficient, it was confirmed that the EAC pavement will be a durable solution due to the guarantee of skid resistance on high-speed roads during its service life.

Analysis of the Actual Contact Surface of Selected Aircraft Tires with the Airport Pavement as a Function of Pressure and Vertical Load

The contact surface of the wheel with the airport surface is important for the safety of flight operations in the ground manoeuvring area. The area of the contact surface, its shape and stress distribution at the pavement surface are the subject of many scientists’ considerations. However, there are only a few research studies which include pressure and vertical load directly and its influence on tire-pavement contact area. There are no research studies which take into account aircraft tires. This work is a piece of an extensive research project which aims to develop a device and a method for continuous measurement of the natural airport pavement’s load capacity. One of the work elements was to estimate the relationship between wheel pressure and wheel pressure on the surface, and the area of the contact surface. The results of the research are presented in this article. Global experience in this field is cited at the beginning of the article. Then, the theoretical basis for calculating the wheel with the road surface contact area was presented. Next, the author’s research views and measurement method are presented. Finally, the obtained test results and comments are shown. The tests were carried out for four types of tires. Two of them were airplane tires from the PZL M28 Skytruck/Bryza and Sukhoi Su-22 aircraft. Two more came from the airport ASFT (airport surface friction tester) friction tester-one smooth ASTM; the other smooth retreaded type T520. The tires were tested in a pressure range from 200 to 800 kPa. The range of vertical wheel load on the pavement was 3.23–25.93 kN for airplane tires, and 0.8–4.0 kN for friction tester tires. The tests proved a significant influence of the wheel pressure value and wheel pressure on the surface on the obtained contact surface area of the wheel with the surface. In addition, it was noted that the final shape and size of the contact surface is affected by factors other than wheel pressure, tire pressure and dimensions.

Tests and Assessment of the Contact Surface of Selected Measuring Tires of Friction Testers with the Airport Surface Depending on Changes in Pressure and Load

The basis of the work was to estimate the relationship between wheel pressure and wheel pressure on the surface, and the size of the contact surface. The article presents world experience in the field and presents the theoretical basis for calculating the contact area of a wheel with the road surface. The tests were carried out for two types of tires - ASTM E-1551 and ASFT T520. The tests proved a significant influence of the wheel pressure value and wheel pressure on the surface on the obtained surface area of the wheel contact with the surface.
