Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) and Salicylic Acid Polymeric Prodrug Grafted onto Medical Silicone to Obtain a Novel Thermo- and pH-Responsive Drug Delivery System for Potential Medical Devices

Alleviating glucose repression and enhancing respiratory capacity to increase itaconic acid production

The Crabtree effect products ethanol and acetic acid can be used for itaconic acid (IA) production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, both the IA synthesis and oxidative phosphorylation pathways were hampered by glucose repression when glucose was used as the substrate. This study aimed to improve IA titer by increasing gene expressions related to glucose derepression without impairing yeast growth on glucose. Engineering the acetyl-CoA synthesis pathway increased the titer of IA to 257 mg/L in a urea-based medium. Instead of entire pathway overexpression, we found that some signaling pathways regulating glucose repression were effective targets to improve IA production and respiratory capacity. As a consequence of the reduced inhibition, IA titer was further increased by knocking out a negative regulator of the mitochondrial retrograde signaling MKS1. SNF1/MIG1 signaling was disturbed by deleting the hexokinase HXK2 or an endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein GSF2. The shaking results showed that XYY286 (BY4741, HO::cadA, Y::Dz.ada, 208a::Mt.acs, Δhxk2, pRS415-cadA, pRS423-aac2) accumulated 535 mg/L IA in 168 h in the YSCGLU medium. qRT-PCR results verified that deletion of MKS1 or HXK2 upregulated the gene expressions of the IA synthesis and respiratory pathways during the growth on glucose.

Promoters for Improved Adhesion Strength between Addition-Cured Liquid Silicone Rubber and Low-Melting-Point Thermoplastic Polyurethanes

A polydimethylsiloxane armed with epoxy, alkoxy and acrylate groups was synthesized from silanol terminated-PDMS and epoxy and acrylate groups functionalized silane coupling agents, and utilized as the adhesion promoter (AP) to prepare addition-cured liquid silicone rubber that exhibited self-adhesion ability (SA-LSR) with biocompatible thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) sheets. The structural characteristics of AP were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which demonstrated the strong adhesion to polyester-based TPU sheets due to a sufficient amount of acrylate groups, epoxy groups and silanol groups obtained by the hydrolysis of alkoxy groups. In detail, the peel-off strength of SA-LSR and TPU joints reached up to 7.63 N mm⁻¹ after the optimization of adhesion promoter including type and content, and curing condition including time and temperature. The cohesive failure was achieved during the sample breakage process. Moreover, the SA-LSR showed a good storage stability under proper storage conditions. This design strategy provided the feasibility to combine the advantages of addition-cured liquid silicone rubber and plastics with low melting points, promoting the potential application range of those silicone-based materials.

Recent Advances in Functional Polymer Materials for Energy, Water, and Biomedical Applications: A Review

Academic research regarding polymeric materials has been of great interest. Likewise, polymer industries are considered as the most familiar petrochemical industries. Despite the valuable and continuous advancements in various polymeric material technologies over the last century, many varieties and advances related to the field of polymer science and engineering still promise a great potential for exciting new applications. Research, development, and industrial support have been the key factors behind the great progress in the field of polymer applications. This work provides insight into the recent energy applications of polymers, including energy storage and production. The study of polymeric materials in the field of enhanced oil recovery and water treatment technologies will be presented and evaluated. In addition, in this review, we wish to emphasize the great importance of various functional polymers as effective adsorbents of organic pollutants from industrial wastewater. Furthermore, recent advances in biomedical applications are reviewed and discussed.

Simultaneous Grafting Polymerization of Acrylic Acid and Silver Aggregates Formation by Direct Reduction Using γ Radiation onto Silicone Surface and Their Antimicrobial Activity and Biocompatibility

The modification of medical devices is an area that has attracted a lot of attention in recent years; particularly, those developments which search to modify existing devices to render them antimicrobial. Most of these modifications involve at least two stages (modification of the base material with a polymer graft and immobilization of an antimicrobial agent) which are both time-consuming and complicate synthetic procedures; therefore, as an improvement, this project sought to produce antimicrobial silicone (PDMS) in a single step. Using gamma radiation as both an energy source for polymerization initiation and as a source of reducing agents in solution, PDMS was simultaneously grafted with acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (AAc:EGDMA) while producing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the surface of the material. To obtain reproducible materials, experimental variables such as the effect of the dose, the intensity of radiation, and the concentration of the silver salt were evaluated, finding the optimal reaction conditions to obtain materials with valuable properties. The characterization of the material was performed using electronic microscopy and spectroscopic techniques such as 13C-CPMAS-SS-NMR and FTIR. Finally, these materials demonstrated good antimicrobial activity against S. aureus while retaining good cell viabilities (above 90%) for fibroblasts BALB/3T3.
