The Corrosion Characteristics and Tensile Behavior of Reinforcement under Coupled Carbonation and Static Loading

Influence of Pore Size and Fatigue Loading on NaCl Transport Properties in C-S-H Nanopores: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

The transport properties of chloride ions in cement-based materials are one of the major deterioration mechanisms for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This paper investigates the influence of pore size and fatigue loading on the transport properties of NaCl in C-S-H nanopores using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Molecular models of C-S-H, NaCl solution, and C-S-H nanopores with different pore diameters are established on a microscopic scale. The distribution of the chloride ion diffusion rate and the diffusion coefficient of each particle are obtained by statistically calculating the variation of atomic displacement with time. The results indicate that the chloride ion diffusion rate perpendicular to C-S-H nanopores under fatigue loading is 4 times faster than that without fatigue loading. Moreover, the diffusion coefficient of water molecules and chloride ions in C-S-H nanopores increases under fatigue loading compared with those without fatigue loading. The diffusion coefficient of water molecules in C-S-H nanopores with a pore size of 3 nm obtained from the MD simulation is 1.794 × 10⁻⁹ m²/s, which is slightly lower than that obtained from the experiment.

Damage Evolution of RC Beams Under Simultaneous Reinforcement Corrosion and Sustained Load

To accurately obtain the performance of concrete structures in coastal regions, it is necessary to correctly understand the damage evolution law of reinforced concrete (RC) members under real working conditions. In this paper, four RC beams, subjected to different levels of corrosion and sustained load, are first tested. Reinforcement corrosion coupled with sustained load increases the number and width of cracks at the soffit of beams but decreases their loading capacities. Crack width of the corroded beam under 50% of designed load is two times of that under 30% of designed load. Residual loading capacities of the corroded beams subjected to 30% and 50% of designed load are 87.5% and 81.8% of the control beam. A finite element model is developed for the corroded RC beams. Due to less confinement, concrete below and at the sides of reinforcements is subjected to a higher stress, compared to concrete above the reinforcements. Corrosion expansion of reinforcements is successfully modelled by a temperature-filed method, as it properly simulates the damage evolution of the corroded RC beams. As a result, concrete cracking, caused by the reinforcement corrosion, is well captured. Coupling reinforcement corrosion with sustained load significantly increases the damage level in RC beams, particularly for those subjected to a high sustained load. The whole damage evolution process of concrete cracking due to corrosion expansion under the coupling effect of sustained loading and environment can be simulated, thus providing a reference for the durability evaluation, life prediction, and numerical simulation of concrete structure.

Prediction Model for the Carbonation of Post-Repair Materials in Carbonated RC Structures

Concrete carbonation damages the passive film that surrounds reinforcement bars, resulting in their exposure to corrosion. Studies on the prediction of concrete carbonation are thus of great significance. The repair of pre-built reinforced concrete (RC) structures by methods such as remodeling was recently introduced. While many studies have been conducted on the progress of carbonation in newly constructed buildings and RC structures fitted with new repair materials, the prediction of post-repair carbonation has not been considered. In the present study, accelerated carbonation was carried out to investigate RC structures following surface layer repair, in order to determine the carbonation depth. To validate the obtained results, a second experiment was performed under the same conditions to determine the carbonation depth by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). For the accelerated carbonation experiment, FDM and FEM analyses, produced very similar results, thus confirming that the carbonation depth in an RC structure after surface layer repair can be predicted with accuracy. The specimen repaired using inhibiting surface coating (ISC) had the highest carbonation penetration of 19.81, while this value was the lowest for the corrosion inhibiting mortar (IM) with 13.39 mm. In addition, the carbonation depth predicted by using the carbonation prediction formula after repair indicated that that the analytical and experimental values are almost identical if the initial concentration of Ca(OH)₂ is assumed to be 52%.

Interacting Effects Induced by Two Neighboring Pits Considering Relative Position Parameters and Pit Depth

For pre-corroded aluminum alloy 7075-T6, the interacting effects of two neighboring pits on the stress concentration are comprehensively analyzed by considering various relative position parameters (inclination angle θ and dimensionless spacing parameter λ) and pit depth (d) with the finite element method. According to the severity of the stress concentration, the critical corrosion regions, bearing high susceptibility to fatigue damage, are determined for intersecting and adjacent pits, respectively. A straightforward approach is accordingly proposed to conservatively estimate the combined stress concentration factor induced by two neighboring pits, and a concrete application example is presented. It is found that for intersecting pits, the normalized stress concentration factor K_tnor increases with the increase of θ and λ and always reaches its maximum at θ = 90°, yet for adjacent pits, K_tnor decreases with the increase of λ and the maximum value appears at a slight asymmetric location. The simulations reveal that K_tnor follows a linear and an exponential relationship with the dimensionless depth parameter R_d for intersecting and adjacent cases, respectively.
