Bio-Inspired Nanomaterials for Micro/Nanodevices: A New Era in Biomedical Applications

Exploring bio-inspired nanomaterials (BINMs) and incorporating them into micro/nanodevices represent a significant development in biomedical applications. Nanomaterials, engineered to imitate biological structures and processes, exhibit distinctive attributes such as exceptional biocompatibility, multifunctionality, and unparalleled versatility. The utilization of BINMs demonstrates significant potential in diverse domains of biomedical micro/nanodevices, encompassing biosensors, targeted drug delivery systems, and advanced tissue engineering constructs. This article thoroughly examines the development and distinctive attributes of various BINMs, including those originating from proteins, DNA, and biomimetic polymers. Significant attention is directed toward incorporating these entities into micro/nanodevices and the subsequent biomedical ramifications that arise. This review explores biomimicry's structure-function correlations. Synthesis mosaics include bioprocesses, biomolecules, and natural structures. These nanomaterials' interfaces use biomimetic functionalization and geometric adaptations, transforming drug delivery, nanobiosensing, bio-inspired organ-on-chip systems, cancer-on-chip models, wound healing dressing mats, and antimicrobial surfaces. It provides an in-depth analysis of the existing challenges and proposes prospective strategies to improve the efficiency, performance, and reliability of these devices. Furthermore, this study offers a forward-thinking viewpoint highlighting potential avenues for future exploration and advancement. The objective is to effectively utilize and maximize the application of BINMs in the progression of biomedical micro/nanodevices, thereby propelling this rapidly developing field toward its promising future.

Thermodynamic characterization of a non-commercial emulsifying agent for asphalt emulsion

The objective of the present work was to characterize a non-commercial emulsifying agent: dodecylpyridinium thiocyanate (C12PCNS). This study was carried out by conductimetry technique in the temperature range 25-50 °C. Assuming the system conforms to the pseudo-phase separation model, change of standard Gibbs free energy, ΔG_m⁰, enthalpy, ΔH_m⁰, and entropy of micellization, ΔS_m⁰, were estimated. Values for critical micelle concentration (cmc) and the ionization degree, β, were determined directly from the experimental data. The results show that the influence of the counter ion is very relevant, because the cmc for this compound is appreciably greater than the cmc of other pyridinium homologs of the same chain length. Finally, the compensation rule for this system has been found and the compensation temperature and the intercept ΔH^*-it is an indication of the stability of the micelle-were estimated.

Nanoparticle-Engendered Rupture of Lipid Membranes

Tension-induced rupture of 1,2-dimyristoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) lipid membranes with encapsulated hydrophobic nanoparticles is elucidated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The dynamics of hole formation is studied, and a nanoparticle size-dependent relationship is established for the probability of membrane rupture within a given time as a function of the membrane tension. Two mechanisms of hole formation are explored: homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation at the nanoparticle surface. While the kinetics of homogeneous nucleation in unloaded membranes complies with the predictions of the classical Deryagin-Gutop (DG) theory, the heterogeneous nucleation causes progressively lower lysis tensions as the particle size increases. The thermodynamics of heterogeneous nucleation is treated by introducing an effective contact angle at the three-phase, solvent-membrane-solid boundary into the DG theory. The proposed approach helps quantitatively interpret the simulation results and predict the membrane stability in real experiments with significantly larger (by many orders of magnitude) observation times and spatial scales.

Carbon-Based Oxamate Cobalt(III) Complexes as Bioenzyme Mimics for Contaminant Elimination in High Backgrounds of Complicated Constituents

Complex wastewater with massive components is now a serious environmental issue facing humanity. Selective removal of low-concentration contaminants in mixed constituents holds great promise for increasing water supplies. Bioenzymes like horseradish peroxidase exhibit oxidizing power and selectivity. Here, we manufactured its mimic through immobilizing non-heme oxamate anionic cobalt(III) complex ([Co^III(opba)]⁻, opba = o-phenylenebis(oxamate)) onto pyridine (Py) modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes ([Co^III(opba)]⁻-Py-MWCNTs, MWCNTs = multiwalled carbon nanotubes), where MWCNTs captured substrates and Py functioned as the fifth ligand. We chose typical azo dye (C.I. Acid Red 1) and antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) as model substrates. Without •OH, this catalyst could detoxify target micropollutants efficiently at pH from 8 to 11. It also remained efficient in repetitive tests, and the final products were non-poisonous OH-containing acids. Combined with radical scavenger tests and electron paramagnetic resonance result, we speculated that high-valent cobalt-oxo active species and oxygen atom transfer reaction dominated in the reaction pathway. According to density functional theory calculations, the electron spin density distribution order showed that electron-withdrawing ligand was beneficial for inward pulling the excess electron and lowering the corresponding energy levels, achieving an electrophilic-attack enhancement of the catalyst. With target removal property and recyclability, this catalyst is prospective in water detoxication.

Adhesion mechanisms of curli subunit CsgA to abiotic surfaces

Curli fibers are functional amyloids that play a key role in biofilm structure and adhesion to various surfaces. Strong bioinspired adhesives comprising curli fibers have recently been created; however, the mechanisms curli uses to attach onto abiotic surfaces are still uncharacterized. Toward a materials-by-design approach for curli-based adhesives and multifunctional materials, we examine curli subunit adsorption onto graphene and silica surfaces through atomistic simulation. We find that both structural features and sequence influence adhesive strength, enabling the CsgA subunit to adhere strongly to both polar and nonpolar surfaces. Specifically, flexible regions facilitate adhesion to both surfaces, charged and polar residues (Arg, Lys, and Gln) enable strong interactions with silica, and six-carbon aromatic rings (Tyr and Phe) adsorb strongly to graphene. We find that adsorption not only lowers molecular mobility but also leads to loss of secondary structure, factors that must be well balanced for effective surface attachment. Both events appear to propagate through the CsgA structure as correlated motion between clusters of residues, often H-bonded between rows on adjacent β strands. To quantify this, we present a correlation analysis approach to detecting collective motion between residue groups. We find that certain clusters of residues have a higher impact on the stability of the rest of the protein structure, often polar and bulky groups within the helix core. These findings lend insight into bacterial adhesion mechanisms and reveal strategies for theory-driven design of engineered curli fibers that harness point mutations and conjugates for stronger adhesion.
